Culinary arts cover a wide range of skills, from making food look pretty to telling a story with a dish. Think of a chef as an artist using ingredients as their tools. However, another artistic avenue finds its inspiration in one specific ingredient—the humble egg.

Pysanky, the traditional Ukrainian art of decorating eggs, is an enchanting form of expression that elevates the egg into a canvas for intricate designs and deep symbolism. The practice of pysanky dates back centuries, with roots embedded in Ukrainian culture.

The process of creating pysanky is meticulous, involving the use of beeswax and a specialized tool called a ‘kistka.’ The artist applies layers of wax to the eggshell, with each layer covering the parts that should retain the egg’s original color. Between each wax application, the egg is dipped in dyes, progressing from light to dark shades. After the final dye bath, the wax is melted to reveal the intricate design, and the egg becomes a masterpiece.

In the vibrant realm of pysanky artistry, our very own Bossier City resident, Shelley Masog, owner of The Pysanky Nest, shines as a pysanky artist known for her exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to preserving this age-old tradition. In 2022, her commitment earned her top honors at the Louisiana State Fair, where she claimed the first place and grand champion titles for her captivating Christmas ornaments. Shelley’s interest in the art of pysanky was sparked by her uncle in Minnesota, a seasoned pysanky artist of many years.

“The fact that it’s done on real eggshells is fascinating,” said Masog. “In 2011, he showed me how to create my first pysanka, and I have been writing Pysanky ever since.”

The term ‘pysanky’ comes from the Ukrainian word ‘pysaty,’ which means ‘to write.’ This is fitting, as Pysanky artists, in essence, write on their eggs with wax and dyes, imbuing them with intricate patterns, symbols, and personal messages.

“Historically, these eggs were often created around Easter, and the eggs incorporated Christian symbolism, such as crosses. The eggs were kept whole, but now many artists empty them,” explained Masog.

“Today, artists often create pysanky throughout the year using modern and traditional designs.”

Recently, Shelley has begun exploring the fusion of the traditional art form with jewelry making. To create jewelry, the decorated eggshell is delicately cut and shaped into the desired pieces, which can include pendants, earrings, or other adornments.

“The challenging part has been learning to cut the pieces from the eggshell without damaging the design so much that it cannot be used,” shared Masog.

Precision is crucial to avoid damaging the intricate design. To preserve the vivid colors and the fragility of the eggshell, the finished jewelry pieces are often sealed with a protective coating like resin. This enhances their longevity and adds a subtle sheen to the final product.

“I also fill tiny eggshells, such as finch and parakeet eggs, with resin to make jewelry.”

Shelley Masog’s unique combination of Pysanky and jewelry-making serves as a captivating bridge between tradition and innovation. When asked about the message or emotions she hopes to convey through her art, Shelley passionately expresses, “I love creating Pysanky and sharing this art with others. I enjoy learning about other cultures, so I hope others enjoy learning about this unique art form.”

By blending the ancient with the contemporary, Shelley’s creations offer a vibrant, living connection to a rich artistic tradition and contribute to the local artistic community. You can find Shelley’s Pysanky art by visiting her artist shop on Etsy, located at www.etsy.com/shop/PysankyNest.

In a bold move that saw the BPCC Cavalier Players venturing beyond their Louisiana roots, the spotlight recently shone on their production of Jeffrey Hatcher’s “Scotland Road” in the heart of Chicagoland. Collaborating with the esteemed Canterbury Summer Theatre from Michigan City, Indiana, this theatrical escapade provided BPCC Theatre students with a hands-on experience in touring and staging a live play.

The play revolves around a mysterious incident – a young woman dressed in nineteenth-century garb discovered floating on an iceberg in the vast North Atlantic. With just a single word, “Titanic,” escaping her lips, the mystery deepens as she cryptically refers to a place called “Scotland Road.”

Guided by Dr. Ray Scott Crawford, Director of Scotland Road, and Artistic Director of Canterbury Summer Theatre for over 38 years, the play showcases the talents of BPCC Theatre actors and students Blaine Fultz, Sarah Noelle Foster, Riley Burns, and Lauren Holland. The logistical aspects were in capable hands too, with recent graduate Johnathan Houghes managing the stage, supported by talented freshman Brody Hines. Contributions from David White, the Technical Director, and Jim Boyter, the Properties Designer, ensured the seamless execution of this traveling production.

“Being able to reconstruct the set in new environments can be challenging, but also a wonderful learning opportunity for aspiring technical production professionals,” said Houghes.

Dr. Crawford emphasized the synergy of the collaboration, noting, “For eighteen summers, BPCC and Canterbury have come together to create outstanding productions. This year was no exception, offering our students a platform to shine professionally while enriching Canterbury’s esteemed season.”

Stepping into a leading role, Blaine Fultz shared his enthusiasm, saying, “I’m on track to graduate this December with my theatre degree,” said Blaine Fultz. “This experience has truly enhanced the performance opportunities I’ve been a part of at BPCC. It’s challenged me to apply the skills I’ve acquired over my time on campus and has been an incredible journey that has put my acquired skills to the test.”

Sarah Noelle Foster, who portrayed Halbrech in the production, added her perspective, “The fact that BPCC gave me the chance to go to Canterbury really makes me feel like furtherment of my career is a priority. Plus, it was so much fun!”Beyond the compelling performances, the journey encompassed an intensive rehearsal process culminating in three captivating shows. Amid the iconic urban landscape of Chicago, the students also had the chance to explore renowned landmarks and immerse themselves in the five-time Tony-nominated musical, “Rock of Ages,” at Chicago’s historic Mercury Theatre in the lively Wrigleyville neighborhood.

The reverberations of this successful collaboration extend far beyond the spotlight. Plans are already in motion to continue this tradition in the upcoming summers. BPCC’s theater program thrives on such enriching partnerships that nurture the aspirations of future theater professionals.

The BPCC Theatre Program, based at Bossier Parish Community College, provides an encompassing platform for students to explore their creative potential. With a commitment to excellence and innovation, the program equips students with hands-on experiences that pave the way for thriving careers in the performing arts.

On the other end of this creative partnership stands Canterbury Summer Theatre, a cultural cornerstone in the Chicagoland area for over five decades. It proudly holds the distinction of being one of the longest continuously producing Summer Stock theaters in the Midwest, consistently upholding its reputation for artistic excellence.

As the curtain closes on this memorable chapter, one thing remains clear: the collaboration between BPCC Theatre and Canterbury Summer Theatre has not only brought riveting performances to the stage but has also elevated the learning curve for the next generation of theater enthusiasts, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of performing arts education.

Some gyms paint slogans like “No pain, no gain” on the walls. Some boast of being “judgement-free zones.” At Christ Fit Gym off of Chinaberry Lane in Bossier City, the message is a bit more complex:

“For bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” — 1 Timothy 4:8

That’s because Christ Fit is not just a gym. It’s the foundation of one family’s mission.
“I want to tell as many people about Jesus as I possibly can, and I want to make a difference in our community,” said owner Billy Weatherall. “That’s certainly what this gym has done. And it starts with me. It’s been a big differencein my life, in my family’s life.”

Weatherall has long been into physical fitness. Folks used to come to his garage to work out, but he also admits to partying and drinking back then, too.

Then it all changed.

“I got saved in 2006 after the military,” he said. “I came home from three deployments and was really broken. I gave my life to the Lord. I told the Lord the day of my salvation, ‘I am going to be completely committed to you. I don’t know what that looks like. I don’t know much about You. But if You just give me purpose, I’ll do whatever you want.’”

At that time, Weatherall continued to welcome people into his garage to work out. But that’s where the similarities stopped.

“We went from partying and drinking, then after I got saved, we started doing Bible devotions,” he said. “I was like, ‘Guys, this is going to be a little bit weird.’ They said, ‘Bill, this is weird, but you come here, and we like it. You let us work out for free.’ And people started coming.”

And people kept coming. In fact, Weatherall said so many people came that they outgrew the garage at his home. That’s when God came back to him about that commitment Weatherall made in 2006.

“Life was just so good,” he said. “We were doing well. (My wife) was a full-time nurse. I was back in the reserves as a drill sergeant, in oil and gas, back in school doing very good. Then, in 2011, God hit me up on that promise. He wanted me to leave everything and start a gym.”

Christ Fit Gym is open at 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. It offers a variety of free classes throughout the day. Each class begins with a devotion that lasts about 15 minutes. The gym also has an array of machines and free weights available for those who want to work out at their own pace.
“We just want people to come up here and get involved,” he said. “It’s my job to make sure this environment stays Christ-like. A lot of people who don’t go to church want to come here and work out. They sit through the devotions because they respect a free gym, and 100 percent of the time, they’re always asking me questions afterwards. It’s always a unique thing that they get genuine, authentic Christianity up here.”

And every bit of it is free. Christ Fit does not operate on membership dues. It is a donations-only operation.

“You can come here 1,000 times and never give a dime,” Weatherall said. “Pastors were saying, ‘Bill, this is not a good idea. You don’t have any funding.’ But when I went to sleep, God was driving me crazy. He was making my life miserable because He was telling me to go, and I was saying no.”

Weatherall said God made it impossible to do anything but commit to the vision.

“We’re gonna keep on doing this no matter what,” he said. “Until Jesus comes back or the money runs out, we’re going to fight tooth and nail to see that this place survives and continues to be a lighthouse in this community.”

Christ Fit Gym is a mission not just for Billy, but his entire family.

Billy’s wife, Julie Weatherall, was a labor and delivery nurse for 12 years before she left that job to join the business full time.

“I remember the day Billy called me about opening a gym, and how much we were going to charge,” she said. “Then I was at work one day, and he called me and was like, ‘This is going to sound crazy, but God has laid it on my heart that we need to do donations only.’ I just sat there for a second, thinking, ‘How’s that going to work? But OK, let’s roll with it.’

“We have ups and downs and all arounds, but all in all, it’s been a huge blessing. To see the growth from one room where you could fit 10 people to where we are at now, it’s really awesome.”

Julie started keeping the books for Christ Fit in her spare time while she continued working as a nurse. But as the business grew, Billy thought it would be a good idea to add a smoothie store to the gym five years ago.

“That sounds crazy,” she remembers saying. “I prayed about it and prayed about it, and I was like, ‘OK, I’ll just go part time. I’ll still keep my job, still keep my insurance. So I started kind of part time, and it was so much I ended up just quitting my nursing job.”

Billy’s sister, Jodi Johnston, recalls how she got involved in the early days.

“I remember when he told me, I said, ‘If the bank will give you a loan for $50,000 and you’ve been unemployed for a year, and she’s a full-time nurse, well, I guess it’s God’s plan.’” And the first bank he went to did give him that loan.

Johnston recalls one night in that first year when her brother called her, distressed by the fact that no one was donating to the gym and the rent was due. That’s when she threw out an idea.

“I’ve always been a huge garage sale person,” she said. “I told him, ‘Have a garage sale. People that know what you’re doing, and the kids that have come there, they love you. Nobody wants to see this fail.’”

That first garage sale brought in enough money to pay the month’s rent. Soon the garage sales became a weekly event. They kept growing, Johnston said, until they turned into the Christ Fit Thrift Store, behind the gym.

“The thrift store is one of our biggest blessings,” she said. “It has been able to provide so much.”

Billy’s brother, Bernie, has been there from the beginning, helping put in the floors and set up the equipment. But the gym wasn’t making money in those earlier days, so Bernie worked in oil and gas for seven years — “a horrible lifestyle,” he said.

“I came back home, got my life right with the Lord, and started working here full time,” Bernie said. “This gym saved my life, 100 percent.”

Bernie works with the moving and recycling arms of the operation. Those operations, along with the thrift store, help keep the gym operating on a donation basis.

Even Billy’s mother, Janet Weatherall, plays a role in the operations.

“Ever since the gym was opened, Billy has always given me a place here at the gym” she said. “Billy has been so obedient. I look at his life, and God has just blessed him.”

Christ Fit’s growing portfolio of businesses and services provides more than just a place to work out. To many, it provides an opportunity.

“Christ Fit Gym is not just a gym,” Johnston said. “We have all the special needs students work here during the day. This whole facility offers second-chance employment. We strongly believe in that. We think, if somebody doesn’t give them a chance, why won’t they go back to their old ways? It’s our job to plant the seed. If you come here, it’s gonna get planted. And if you come here enough, it’s gonna get watered, too. That’s the goal of it.”

“It doesn’t matter your past,” Billy said. “We are willing to give anyone a chance. We all have pretty bad backgrounds. We’ve made some mistakes. We’ve lived life. I’ve lived life to the fullest for the world, and I’ve lived life to the fullest for the Lord. It’s not even comparable.”

While each family member has a specialty in the operation, they all pitch in anywhere they are needed. Billy and Julie both have helped on moving jobs, and Janet has been known to help with the packing.

“If we’re all not in it, I don’t want to do it,” Julie said. “This is such a beautiful thing we have here with our family.”

As the operations continue to grow, the family remains committed to God, to each other and to every person who walks through their doors.

To Julie, it’s about being the church to people who might not go to a church building.

For Bernie, the excitement is in seeing how God always shows up.

“I see God’s favor daily,” he said. “I see miracles weekly. It’s unbelievable. God’s favor is all over this. Truly blessed.”

And for Janet, it’s simply a labor of love.

“This gym is absolutely unconditional love,” she said. “People come as they are, and it’s always just been a warm, welcoming place. I’m just so proud of my children. I learn from them every day. They are my inspiration.”

For Billy, it all goes back to Christ Fit’s mission statement, found in 1 Timothy 4:18.

“Physical training is important, but it’s not the most important,” he said. “It’s knowing the Lord. When you know the Lord, it has eternal ramifications. It’s for here, and it’s for the future.”

It is true that social media has changed the way we communicate with each other. And while this bears some negative aspects, social media can also prove positive in many ways. One of these ways is how being present on social media can spark creativity in an individual. Watching another person’s dance performance can inspire a desire to join a dance class. Hearing someone sing on YouTube might encourage you to join a choir or take vocal lessons to improve your own skills. Such was the case with Janet Maines when she came across a colleague’s charcoal sketches on Facebook.

Janet chose a career in graphic art and works in that field designing websites, logos, brochures – anything that requires a creative eye for design. One day, while on Facebook, she saw Jim Huckabee’s work and was inspired to reach out to him in hopes of taking lessons. Jim invited her to a “class” which was more of a gathering of fellow artists who met regularly in Charlie Tabor’s garage. As she watched in fascination, Jim handed her a pencil and sketch pad and encouraged her to draw. What she turned out looked more like a kindergarten drawing but Janet kept coming to the class. It didn’t take long for her to catch on and soon, she was getting commissions from friends for her charcoal work.

Janet managed to turn the Covid quarantine into a positive experience. She began spending more time online following artists on social media. She would study other techniques and styles to advance her skills. When she began communicating with Kathy Morris, an artist from Atlanta, a lasting friendship and mentorship was formed. Kathy encouraged her tremendously and suggested that Janet should be teaching her artistic skills to others. It was perfect timing. Her graphic design work had slowed down. Her art commissions had begun to blossom, and she began teaching. Her studio – in one of the most unexpected locations imaginable. You may find her on any given Wednesday in the WHOLE FOODS café from 1:00 to 3:00. It’s there that her adult class attracts diners and shoppers alike. Janet also takes private students beginning at age 12.

Janet became a member of the Portrait Society of America. Formed in 1998 as an educational organization, the Portrait Society of America is dedicated to furthering the traditions of fine art portraiture and figurative art through programs and publications. According to their website, members can access technical information, delve into traditional aesthetics, and research the history of figurative art and portraiture. Among other enrichment activities, this organization recognizes and honors artists of distinction who “have over the course of their careers produced bodies of work that epitomizes excellence within the discipline.”

It was through this organization and the encouragement of her mentor, Kathy Morris, that Janet entered an annual competition. Both of her entries made it to the semi-finals with one of those portraits being featured in a national art magazine. They will also be on display at Sotheby’s in New York City. This is quite an accomplishment in anyone’s book.

Perhaps dearer to her heart is Janet’s involvement with a non-profit organization started by Brent Anderson. “In My Father’s Eyes Portraits” works with families of children who have been diagnosed with cancer to provide them with beautiful portraits of their children. Anderson enlists the help of artists willing to donate their talent for this worthy cause. “The feeling of love between the artist and the recipient is beyond words,” Janet claims. Anderson has the portrait framed and sent to these families free of charge and wrapped in compassion.

How’s that for a creative spark from a Facebook post? Thank you, Jim Huckabee.

If you would like to see more of Janet’s work, check out her portfolio on Instagram @janetmainesartist. She also has a Facebook presence (of course) and a website: janetmaines.com.

Color infuses all aspects of our lives. Just as music does, colors can evoke emotions and take people on a journey. Each color has a different personality or a unique story to tell, depending on who is doing the looking. Color combinations also create different associations—a place, a time period, or a memory. Brilliant, powerful, emotive color is the driving force behind the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s first artspace exhibition of 2023, Ellen Soffer: Pink Sky, curated by Kelly McDade, Bossier Parish Community College Professor of Art & Humanities.

It is an exhibition of more than 60 new paintings created in the past four years (2019-2022), including works of gouache and watercolor on paper, as well as large scale oil paintings on canvas that feature vibrant color, organic shapes, and dynamic patterns. The exhibition will remain at artspace until April 8, 2023.

Northwest Louisiana artist Soffer is well known for her bright, evocative greens, yellows, reds, blues, oranges, and pinks—
colors that compel you to pause, respond, to feel something. The titles of many of her pieces are also an homage to her passion for color: “Pink Shell, Blue Fish,” “Green Alphabet,” and “Blue Bird.” There is a unique intensity of color and awareness of form throughout her newest works on exhibit in artspace.

Soffer says she creates intuitively, not always knowing how a piece will come together, but certain that color and its intensity will be the driving forces. “My intention is to capture the impressions and sensations left behind from dreams, emotions, or memories, without being limited to the specific details of the events, leaving room for viewer participation and interpretation,” says Soffer.

Kelly McDade, curator for Pink Sky, says that Soffer’s paintings ask the viewer to pause, absorb, think, and ultimately make something meaningful of the works for themselves. McDade’s goal with this exhibition is to celebrate and recognize the work of Soffer, who she believes is one of the most prolific, meticulous, and focused artists she knows. “To become absorbed in Ellen’s imagery is a thrilling and moving experience. She communicates with such bold brushwork and intense color,” says McDade.

Purple Side, Oil and Flashe on Canvas, 48 x 48 inches, © 2022 Ellen Soffer

McDade goes on to describe Soffer’s work as intuitive, while also being very analytical. “When I look at her paintings, while they have a sense of spontaneity and freedom within them, I can tell that nothing is haphazard— very brush stroke and color combination is strategic. I see her work as an invitation for critical thinking and individual emotion,” says McDade.

Soffer creates on canvas and paper using mainly oils, but also gouache, acrylic, and watercolor. She has had solo exhibitions in Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Texas, and Georgia and has been featured in group exhibitions including Mary Tomás Gallery in Dallas and the Longview Museum of Fine Arts, among many other venues. She is a recipient of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s Visual Arts Fellowship and has been awarded residencies from the Ragsdale Foundation and Skowhegan. Soffer earned her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art.

Robert L. Pincus, who has been an art critic, author, book critic, and art historian for more than four decades and was the staff art critic of The San Diego Union Tribune for 25 years has contributed an essay to a full color catalog available in conjunction with Soffer’s exhibition. Pincus says, “I have admired Ellen Soffer’s paintings for a decade now, so it was a real pleasure and a lovely challenge to write an essay on her recent work. The paintings in this exhibition and catalog are teeming with exuberant color, formal ingenuity, and subtle symbolism.”

When asked what she hopes to convey to those seeing the Pink Sky artspace exhibition, Soffer says, “I am happy to share a large body of my work together. I invite viewers to engage with and to interpret my paintings in their own way.”

Child’s play. Before Third Baptist hit the scene, a couple of congregations had suffered through a fate that somersaulted misfortune and instead headed straight for disaster, blight, and apocalyptic tribulation.

Most of you know churches. There are more than 300 church buildings in Shreveport-Bossier, so most of us have stumbled into one or two or six, by accident if nothing else.

Maybe you’re still at the church you grew up in. For those of us miles and even time zones removed from the church we first toddled into, do you remember? Do you remember the church you grew up in? If it’s still standing, does it pretty much look the same, smell the same, “feel” the same?

Probably so.

And good for you. There is something about your childhood church that rings eternal, even though we all know that every church building we’ve ever been in will one day, just like us, no longer be here.

An example: Third Baptist Church had strong ancestors built from Table Mountain pine that nonetheless checked out quicker than most, God bless them.

It had begun as First Baptist Church but had burned down April 22, 1942, long before my time. The story lived on.

There wasn’t so much left as a hymnbook. The only things found of note were the corpses of the pastor and his sometimes secretary, who would come in from the farm once a week to type sermons. When she started going to the church more and more, her husband figured more than typing was going on. A fiery death this side of eternity would be poetic justice, he figured, though no charges were ever filed. Legend has it the angry but satisfied husband left the state while the ashes were still hot, moved to the beach in Virginia, and became a Presbyterian.

Church members built back on the same spot but with one small concession to change. They re-named the church Second Baptist. It semi-thrived, though it took folks a while, either to get back in the spirit or to get the spirit back. In the early 1950s, attendance was back up to 250 or so. The congregation bought choir robes from a church supply in Columbia. There was talk of building a small new “educational” building and kitchen.

Then tragedy struck again in the form of the familiar: fire. Charred offering plates, charred choir robes and, sadly, another preacher’s corpse was all that remained identifiable.

This time, though, there was no afterglow of scandal. The elderly pastor spent a couple of nights a week at the church, on a cot in a small room with a gas heater. Either the heater had exploded or malfunctioned or the preacher had just fallen asleep while smoking a Lucky Strike non-filtered: they never found out for sure.

He was given a nice going-away funeral in the sanctuary of the borrowed Bear Swamp Baptist, five miles outside the city limits. But people didn’t seem as sad as you’d think they should have been. This is because the preacher’s sermons were dry as a peanut shell and he owed money to just about every business in town, from the IGA to Cooke’s Dry Cleaners and Funeral Home.

A lawyer even came to town, the story goes. Not that we didn’t have plenty of lawyers; every house in the county had a back porch lawyer, just none with a real degree. Or even a college credit. No matter: the educated man must have helped get things straightened out because another church got built, and it was mine.

After a month of Sunday afternoon services and prayers and business meetings at the borrowed Bear Swamp, the optimistic and tried-by-fire congregation of Second Baptist decided to try one more time, knowing full well that three strikes and you’re out.

It was decided the church would buy an old property about two miles outside of downtown, a building that had once housed the town’s sixth-graders until that class was folded into the main school on the hill behind the Dairy Maid. For years the building had been used only as a School Board storehouse. With some remodeling by the men in the church, it would serve as a fine sanctuary.

Mainly, everybody hoped the change in location would mean a change in luck. I felt lucky already; that old building was right across the unmarked two-lane from the house I grew up in.
It was named Third Baptist, it was made of brick, and it was heavily insured.
