The annual ritual of “back-to-school” has begun. The whirlwind of shopping is just about over; you’ve segued from a summer schedule to a school bell schedule. Setting your child up for success makes it all worthwhile.

Getting kids ready physically, with new supplies and clothes, is important for practical reasons. A fresh notebook and a well-fitting uniform can boost a child’s confidence and sense of readiness. But the true significance lies in the mental and emotional preparation. I always found the hardest part of back to school was establishing a routine. Especially after our sons got older. They wanted to stay with the summer “sleeping until noon” routine. Suddenly we were shifting bedtime and wake-up times, setting homework hours not to mention keeping up with their sports schedules. I can’t tell you how many quick dinners we’ve eaten sitting at a ballpark.

Now that I can look back on those hectic days, I can smile and sigh and say honestly – I wouldn’t trade them for the world. For me, preparing for back-to-school was a mission not just about ticking items off a list; it’s about nurturing independence, responsibility, and a love for learning. It was about empowering my boys with the tools and confidence they needed to thrive, ensuring they stepped into the classroom not just with new pencils, but with a sense of purpose and preparedness that will serve them throughout the academic year and beyond.

Enjoy these days while you can. Because, in a blink of the eye, they’ll be gone.

You can’t throw a measuring cup down
a grocery store aisle in Louisiana without hitting some sort of Bayou Magic product. Whether it’s spices, beans or rice, Bayou Magic has been a Cajun seasoning staple since August 17, 1987. That’s when Sidney Campbell and the Bayou Magic team made their first official sale of 18 total items to the Albertsons on Southfield Road in Shreveport.

Among the items were rice mixes, jambalaya mixes and seasoning shakers.

Years before, down around Ville Platte, Bayou Sid and the gang had been getting their marketing and selling done grassroots style.

“We used teaspoons, tablespoons and cups,” says Campbell. “We went around the dining room table and put it in Ziploc bags with wrap-around labels.”

“We would have people — some friends and children who were helping us — who would take the bags home, sit on the front porch and wait for the distributor to come by and dish them out to the buyers.”

To get the word out back in the day, Bayou Sid would go from store-to-store handing out free samples of beans, rice and seasoning to the store managers.

“Here you go, I’m just going to leave
that for you,” Campbell would say. It didn’t take long for the stores to come calling Campbell.

Talk about loyalty.
“I call myself the originator, and everyone else is duplicators,” Bayou Sid says. Campbell has even done cooking shows for Southern Living. They know him there as ‘The Man in the Hat.’ He would go on there and show them how to cook a five- course meal in 30 minutes. Throughout the years Sid Campbell has been cooking it up, there have been times where people wanted a piece of the Bayou Magic pie. Or the whole thing. “Marshall Bass at Nabisco offered me $8 million,” Campell says.

Sid’s products are in most all grocery stores. You can also find Sid’s products online any time. And they have some exciting news upcoming. This guy has been doing this a long time, and it shows.

When Missy Setters and her daughter, Codi, rode in the Krewe of Highland Parade in February, something stood out to Missy, who said to Codi,

“This is why we have so many phenomenal athletes from this state; everybody has to be able to catch the parade throws!”

Of course, Setters knows athleticism when she sees it. The former LSU golfer is approaching her 29th game with the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl here in Shreveport, her 19th year as Executive Director.

She’s been married to her husband, former LSU offensive lineman Ross Setters, for all those games.

“We’ll have 31 years in June,” says Ross.

“She’s genuine,” he says. “What you see is what you get. She cares about Shreveport. She cares about the bowl. Her whole life has revolved around sports, the camaraderie, and the ins and outs of it.

“Some people are in it for the publicity. Some are just there to collect a paycheck. Missy enjoys the people and the atmosphere. She always speaks about Shreveport with positivity at a time when a lot of people do not.”

“Her passion for the bowl is what makes her great,” says Erik Evenson, Director of Communications for the Independence Bowl. “You don’t stick around that long if you don’t have a passion for it.”

It’s not just the Independence Bowl Missy is passionate about, either. “We’re going to all the LSU games we can,” Ross says.

Missy, Ross, and Codi went to Tampa, Florida, for New Year’s to watch LSU beat Wisconsin, 35-31, in the ReliaQuest Bowl at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Is she picking up I-Bowl ideas while she’s there, or is she just there for enjoyment?

“It’s a little bit of both,” says Missy. “Watching LSU sports is a release for me. Plus, it’s family time. So many milestones in our lives have been around sports.”

She keeps up with all sports, too, not just football. Ross says they planned a late-winter trip down to Baton Rouge for LSU Gymnastics on Friday, Beach Volleyball on Saturday, and Senior Night of Women’s Basketball on Sunday.

(Beach Volleyball? I didn’t even know LSU had that!)

Of course, she was! Sports are not a part of her life. They are her life. Setters lives and breathes this stuff.

“The No. 1 thing that makes Missy great is she is a fan,” says 2019 Independence Bowl chairman Art Carmody.

“She is watching and following on a weekly basis, just like I am,” says Carmody. “A lot of bowl executives I’ve met throughout the years are not fans. Missy cares about football. She cares about Shreveport-Bossier City and all the events we do for the area. She doesn’t just put on a game in December.”

The game in December is probably the main thing the casual fan would think about when it comes to the I-Bowl, but there is a lot more to it than that.

The Independence Bowl Foundation is raising money throughout the year with sponsorships and ticket sales, but they are also providing philanthropy for the people in our communities.

One of the ways the I-Bowl Foundation gives back to the community is through Extra Yard for Teachers, a program in partnership with the College Football Playoff Foundation to raise money for teachers.

The I-Bowl Foundation has donated over $85,000 in the last three years combined to teachers and schools in Caddo, Bossier, and Desoto Parishes.

Just this past year alone, they donated $11,000 to 23 local teachers through the Touchdown for Teachers initiative.

The 13th Annual Youth Football Clinic will be held in June again this year. It’s a free clinic the I-Bowl Foundation puts on for Shreveport-Bossier, with hundreds of boys and girls ranging from ages 5-13. They’ve had participating coaches from Louisiana Tech, Grambling, Centenary, Northwestern State, and Sam Houston State.

They will also be partnering with the United States Tennis Association and Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club to host a junior tennis tournament in April.

There is also the I-Bowl Foundation’s Kickoff K’s every year. In recent years, it has been a 5K/Half Marathon format.

One year, I won the I-Bowl 10K and got to take home a miniature Lombardi Trophy. Did it feel good to be a champion? Yes. Yes, it did. I’m trying to say that it’s more than just the game in December.

Inching closer to kickoff, there’s Bowl Week, where this year, Setters and the I-Bowl pulled out all the stops for the players and coaches from Texas Tech University and the University of California, Berkeley.

As soon as the teams arrived in town, they were treated to a huge welcome party at the RiverView Theater (formerly Shreveport Civic Theater), complete with Family Feud-type games and meals featuring whole hogs and bacon-wrapped alligator.

A whole hog? A whole hog-wrapped gator?

“Those Louisianimals down there are something else, Mom,” said one of the Cal players when they got back home, maybe. Probably not. But also very possible. The players also had access to the enhanced hospitality rooms and lounges this year.

The crew from Draft Picks Barbershop in Baton Rouge made an appearance, giving all the players fresh cuts.

However, when the game does roll around, Missy Setters is rocking and rolling. In go-mode.

“I think my watch said I walked nine miles during the game last year,” says Setters. “I’m running around, putting out fires. I’ll be down on the field some or up in the box.” “You prepare yourself as much as possible the entire year,” Setters says. “Gameday is much the same.” “It is this culmination of everything,” she says. “It’s this beautiful, exciting point we reach. This is what we work for. But once kickoff happens, now it’s about the game.”

This past year was also the first pre-Christmas game since Setters has been at the helm.

“I believe this was the first year since I’ve been here that the game was before Christmas, so Ross and I got to go to the Natchitoches Christmas Festival,” Setters said. She also said she liked having the game before Christmas this year because it allowed the fans to get back home for the holidays.

The 47th edition of the Independence Bowl kicked off in primetime this year for all of us in CST at 8:15 pm. The Red Raiders beat the Golden Bears, 34-14, on December 16th. It was shown on ESPN, as it has been for over 30 consecutive years.

“ESPN always tells us when the bowl is going to be,” she says. “Ideal kickoff time is late afternoon or early evening.”

A natural-born leader, Setters has also picked up a thing or two along the way from some idols of hers.

One of those people is Tina Kunzer-Murphy, former executive director of the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.

“It was important to watch the way she handled herself,” says Setters. Kunzer-Murphy was the only female executive director of a bowl game in 2006 when Setters became executive director of the I-Bowl by unanimous vote. Being one of only two female bowl executive directors for a time isn’t something Setters even thinks about now.

“At first, I’m sure there was a novelty to it,” she says. “Now, it’s just part of the deal.”

“I think it’s enjoyable to watch it evolve over time,” she says. “I think you’ve got a really good group now. There is a lot more diversity in the room now, and people are getting incredible experience.”

If Missy Setters ever gets any downtime, husband Ross says she enjoys working in the yard. He says she doesn’t get to play as much golf as she may like, but at least she still gets to keep up with it.

She is always watching to see how her local LSU people are holding up, like Shreveport native Sam Burns. I asked Setters what she had planned for the rest of the day. She said she had an executive committee meeting at noon. But we’re eons away from kickoff! Again, that’s the only thing a casual fan like me considers. I don’t see all the behind-the-scenes upkeep and philanthropy that Missy Setters and the Independence Bowl Foundation put on year-round to benefit our community and give back to teachers and kids. Setters says she looks forward to the teams coming into town and kickoff because then, it’s about the game. But there is no game without Missy. She’s the blueprint. She sets the standard. She also sets a really great example for kids, adults, players, and our community.

The good news is you don’t have to wait until kickoff to get involved. If you have kids, check out the free Youth Football Clinic in June or any of the other I-Bowl events.

And be sure to go to

“Life’s not going to stop,” he said. “You’re not going to get a certain time back, so try to do as much as you can with your time.”

Taylor does a lot with his time. In August 2020, the 29-year-old artist sold his first painting. Elizabeth Eldridge, the mother of one of Taylor’s former teammates at C.E. Byrd High School, had seen a video of Taylor sketching.

“She was like, ‘If you ever wanted to get back to doing it for real, let me know. I would really like one,’” he said. “I’ve been rolling ever since.”

The Eldridge family not only bought a painting from Taylor. They helped him set up his business, too. He takes commissions for original paintings and sells prints of his work at notbyhand.us.

Life does not stop, but sometimes it changes directions without warning.

Taylor remembers Sept. 16, 2008, like it was yesterday. It was just two days after his 15th birthday. He was on the practice field, preparing for Byrd’s Week 3 matchup against West Monroe, when the unimaginable happened.

It was better than a C7 complete, Taylor said.

“That means the spinal cord is completely severed,” he said of a C7 complete. “For them, it’s always that 0.000001… whatever percent chance. For me, the percentage for regaining movement was higher.”

He finished that semester with a 1.11 GPA. “I think they were generous with the .11,” he said. So, he transferred to Southern University, where he found a good fit.

Taylor received an associate’s degree from Southern, then returned to LSUS, where he received his bachelor’s degree in humanities in 2018.

Taylor set art aside after high school. When he picked it up again after college, it started out as just a pastime. But it ignited a spark in him. He continues to study art the way he once studied football.

“I realized I was still pretty good at this,” he said. “It went from there to watching YouTube videos. I said, ‘I can probably get better.’ Asking other artists how they did things. From there, it starts becoming a thing you’re obsessive with. It’s kind of like football. You get to where you actually like it. You’re not just out there playing.”

Taylor’s competitive nature kicked in, too. Instead of competing against other artists as he had competed on the football field, he began competing with himself to become a better artist. So, as he did in football, Taylor immersed himself in practice.

In addition to being competitive, Taylor also is a perfectionist. So much so that in the early days of his art career, Taylor wouldn’t accept down payments for his work.

“I treasure quality over quantity,” Taylor said. “If it’s not up to what I like, I will have them throw it away and start over.”

Thomas Williams has been assisting Taylor since 2013 and has seen that perfectionism in action.

“People don’t know how many masterpieces he’s done that only the trash can has seen,” Williams said.

Williams admits to rescuing one of those works Taylor discarded. It hangs in the Williams house today. It’s a symbol of the respect Williams has for Taylor, his artwork, and his process.

“Me being with him all the time, assisting him and watching him, people don’t understand the process he goes through,” Williams said. “Seeing him go from a blank canvas to a finished painting, it’s amazing. I’m blessed every day to see him go through the process.”

Taylor has a job at General Dynamics. He continues to paint and anticipates having his first art show in February. He also is designing T-shirts and hoodies that feature his artwork.

It will look different than it has looked in the past and that new future means that everyone has a seat at the table. It means that we build consensus, and it means that we will move forward together…This was not about winning an election. It never has been about winning an election. Winning an election is simply the first step that we have to take to get on with the work of making our city the great city that it can be. We can build a common future, a future that all of us can enjoy and appreciate and we can have a city that all of us can be proud to say, “I LOVE SHREVEPORT!”

Undeniably passionate about Shreveport, Mayor Arceneaux comes to the job with a selfless focus on building a better Shreveport. His campaign focused on the power of restoration, and he brings to the table exemplary leadership skills, work ethic, prior government experience, vision, wisdom, and a genuine caring for other people.

SB Magazine sat down with the new mayor to hear more of his thoughts about creating a new path forward.

Your campaign had a wide diverse group of people supporting you. How did you bring them all together?

We were we were intentional about making sure that we had representation in our volunteers and on our campaign leadership team from all parts of the city because the mayor has to represent all parts of the city. While walking door to door as Elizabeth and I did starting in April, you learn that most people want the same things, but they might express it differently. They want a safe neighborhood. They want to be able to raise their children. They want their children and grandchildren to be able to play in their neighborhood and to grow and to be prosperous adults. It doesn’t matter where you live. That’s what people want.

Different neighborhoods have different manifestations of issues. Sometimes you have to address those manifestations differently in different neighborhoods. There’s not a one size fits all solution. Unless you have a diverse group of people that are advising you and that are participating, you’re going to miss some of that by thinking this one solution is the solution for everybody.

A mayor is not a savior. A mayor is a facilitator of people learning how to make their community work. It’s the people who make it work, not the mayor. But the mayor has to create an atmosphere and an infrastructure that allows that to happen. That’s what I’m hoping to do, and that takes everybody in the community. You can’t just think ‘if I get this group of people then I win the race.’ When you do that, you’re alienating the other folks and you’ve created division rather than cooperation. So I hope that by listening to people that come from different neighborhoods and have different backgrounds we will learn a lot about each other, so that we may dispel some of the generalizations or assumptions that we make about people that have a different background from us—we’ll find out that we have a whole lot more in common than we have not in common.

Why did you want to run for mayor and what are some of your plans for a new path forward?

I thought I had the unique set of skills and experience to do the work of putting us on a forward path, looking at difficult decisions and making recommendations about those decisions. I think we will face some very difficult decisions during my term. If I have not earned the trust of the people, by the time we have to make those decisions, they’ll be even harder because people won’t trust the government.

So the first thing I want to do is put together a team that the people will trust. Some of them are the same people that are there, but they’ll be under different and new leadership. Some will be new or former participants. I think the leadership will make a difference.

I think by and large, our city employees are competent, and they’re hard working. They haven’t necessarily been motivated, and I hope that I’ll be motivating for them. They’re going to see me a lot. They’re going to see me on the line. They’re going to see me when they’re picking up trash, they’re going to see me at roll calls. They’re going to see me so that I have the opportunity to tell them how much I and the people of Shreveport appreciate what they do. We can’t always give them the pay that they would like to have or that we would like to give them but what we can do is give them appreciation.

The second thing I think we need to do is to really look internally and say, ‘what are the things about my city that I can be proud of?’ We know the things about our city that we can’t be proud of, but every city has those problems or similar problems or a different set of problems. But we need to come together as a city and be proud of who we are/ Then the city needs to provide services that enhance that feeling that this is a really good place and people think, ‘I’m very glad I live here. Why don’t you come consider living here?’

What are the difficult decisions you anticipate?

I think that when we look at our operating budget long term, we’re going to find that in a handful of years, we’re likely to face some difficult financial decisions and the revenues that are going to come in are not going to be sufficient to fund the services that we have. We’ll need to be honest about those things.

I plan to develop a long-range outlook for our operating budget. We have a five-year capital plan. Capital plans are relatively easy to deal with because you have bonds that you’ve sold to fund those projects, and those have already been approved or they wouldn’t be in the plan, or you’re getting capital outlay money from the state or some money from the federal government. But when we’re picking up garbage and we’re having sports programs, other recreational programs, those things are funded by local taxes.

We ended last year I believe, with approximately a $30 million operating reserve. The budget for 2023 suggests that we’ll have a $20 million operating reserve at the end of 2023. Well, that means we’re budgeting to spend $10 million more than we’re taking in, right. If you have $20 million in reserves, you can only do that for two more years. And of course, you can’t completely do away with your operating reserve. So, we’re going to have to look at the ramifications of that and see what it is that we can do to address it.

And I think it’s very important to be completely transparent about finances to give the public information so that they can digest where we are and where it is that we’re likely going. We’ll have a picture of where we are today. What happens if we don’t change anything? And where will we be in two years, five years, 10 years so that people begin to understand. This is where we are headed. I mean, the numbers just tell the story. What will be our response to the story?

And so, we’ll have to decide how we’re going to get our garbage collected and how we’re going to maintain our streets, how we’re going to maintain our infrastructure. If it appears that we’re on a path that tells us we won’t have enough money to do the things that we’re currently doing, then then people will have to make choices based on those decisions. I’ll be making some decisions that I hope—if what I think it’s going to show—then I’ll have to make some budget decisions and respond to that as best we can in hopes that the people will see we really are doing the best we can with the tax dollars that they are giving us. And if we do that, then they can either support something else, or they can understand why it is that their level of service stays at a level that ordinarily they probably would not like to see.

What do you believe is a unique selling point for Shreveport?

I returned to Shreveport as a young lawyer because I felt like I could have a successful professional life and still have a place where I could spend time with my family and enjoy that aspect of life too. So now when I’m doing recruiting for the law firm, I always sell a ‘total quality of life.’ Starting salaries in Dallas or Houston are more than twice what we’re able to offer, so if you can’t compete on money, then then there has to be something other than money for the young people who you want to hire and I think that’s true for any business.

Shreveport has an amazing arts community. We have a really good symphony, we have an opera company, we have ballet, we have all kinds of live music, we have local artists, we have live theater. You can hardly go through a weekend without being able to go see high quality community theater and get to know the people who are doing it. There are musicals that you can afford to take your family to, and you don’t have to go out of town to do it. And if your child decides, ‘I might like to try this,’ there’s an avenue for the child to try that. That’s just not true in most communities. We have wonderful athletic facilities and teams but not every child is going to be an athlete, and so you need to have different ways that you can expose your children to other opportunities to develop themselves. Because they’re going to need to be productive adults.

And it’s so critical that we that we provide those opportunities and Shreveport has those opportunities. We need to enhance them so that not just the affluent have those opportunities, but children from all kinds of economic backgrounds are able to participate and grow and fulfill what I believe is God’s destiny for their lives.

What vision do you have for Shreveport?

I am an optimist by nature. I believe in Shreveport, I believe in the people of Shreveport, and I think when that shows, people will begin to believe in themselves and they’ll begin to believe in their hometown because we have many, many things to be proud of here. We’re strong arts community, we’re a good place to raise a family, we’re a place where young professionals can have a balanced life between their work and their family and their community efforts.

We have from my standpoint the best critical mass of young people that are here and want to contribute to the community that I’ve seen in my lifetime. That encourages me. People who are 25 to 45 have decided to come to Shreveport and have decided, ‘I’m gonna come to Shreveport and I’m going to contribute’ and we need to give that group of people the opportunity to contribute and learn. We need to use their idealism. We need to temper it with a bit of experience and wisdom. And then we can move our city forward because we’re quickly coming upon a time when we need to pass the torch from one generation to the next.

My job is to have the city ready to pass that torch. So one of the things that I’m trying to do is to have a succession plan, from generation to generation to hand down the good things that we know to the next generation of Shreveport leaders and moms and dads and business people and professional people. And if we do that, then our city is going to mushroom because we’re going to enable all of that energy to manifest itself in a great city with great people and you can say, ‘You know I I’ve made really good friends here.’

It’s nice to have places to party but when it gets down to it, the reason you party is because you’re trying to be with your friends. So, if you have a city that has the atmosphere of creating friendships and relationships then you can have a successful city.

What are your plans for the transition team committees?

I’m envisioning those lasting for 60 to 90 days, for some assessment and to help me further plan. I have ideas about what to do about violent crime. I have ideas what to do about economic development. I have ideas what to do about blight. I have ideas of what to do to bring communities together. I have an idea of where our finances are going. Those are the five groups. But we need hard data on that.

I also want to get some additional community input to finalize a plan. But in the meantime, I’m going to be acting. There are several pieces of legislation that we’ll be moving forward with early on in the term to set the stage for those other things, so it’s not wait and see what these groups come up with, it’s wait and see what else they come up with. I think it’s important that we show immediate progress on cleaning up the city, on addressing violent crime and on figuring out how to use every tool that’s available to us to eliminate blight in our city. I already know some of the steps that I want to take, and we will be taking those steps right away.

The classical violinist and actress has several opportunities coming up to share her passion for music and film, both locally and internationally. This winter, Carsillo will be traveling to Cuba as a Cultural Ambassador. But first, Carsillo is part of welcoming Cuban piano virtuoso Aldo López-Gavilán for two performances in Shreveport.

López-Gavilán will join the Shreveport Symphony for the Willis-Knighton Masterworks Series performance “Latin Nights” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at RiverView Theater. The performance will celebrate music of the Americas and will feature López- Gavilán’s work “Emporium,” Ravel’s “Bolero” and the world premiere of “Cloud Scraper: Symphony Americana,” a work the symphony commissioned Shreveport native James Eakin III to compose.

The next day, Carsillo will join López-Gavilán in a concert of chamber music, marking her return to the stage in her first violin performance since late last spring, when a rotator cuff injury sidelined her playing. The Noel Foundation Chamber Music Series recital begins at 3 p.m. at Anderson Auditorium on the Centenary College campus. That performance features López-Gavilán on piano, Ertan Torgul and Carsillo on violin, Michele Gunn on viola and Brett Andrews on cello. They will present several of López-Gavilán’s original compositions. The next time López-Gavilán and Carsillo see each other will be in February 2023, when Carsillo and her husband, Shreveport Symphony Music Director Michael Butterman, will travel as guests of the Cuban government to Havana.

“Michael’s worked with Aldo before,” she said. “They got along really well, and Michael adores his music. Aldo’s wife is the conductor of the Havana Chamber Orchestra, which is an amazing group of musicians. We are so excited to have this opportunity to experience the culture of Cuba through the arts.”

Before she embarks on that cultural mission, Carsillo will perform as a violin soloist in “Christmas…as it should be,” a concert of holiday favorites arranged by Phillip Wade, formerly the music minister at Cypress Baptist Church in Benton. “We are presenting the best Christmas songs, both sacred and secular, in a fresh and powerful way,” Wade said. He added that he considers it an honor to arrange the songs for Carsillo to perform. “There are good violinists, there are very good violinists, then there is Jennifer,” he said.

“Christmas…as it should be” will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 and 10, with a 4 p.m. matinee on Dec. 10, at the Emmett Hook Center. Tickets are available online at tix.com.

But music is not her only passion. Carsillo is a multidimensional artist. It goes back to her childhood in California, where she once dreamed of being a “Vallerina.”

No, don’t try to correct her. “My mom was like, ‘That’s’ wonderful, but it’s pronounced ballerina with a B.’ I was like, ‘I don’t know what that is. I want to be a VALLerina.’ I was so headstrong, so confident about myself. I ‘knew’ that’s what it was called.”

Her aunt took her to see “The Nutcracker” when she was five. Carsillo remembers being “enchanted” by the entire experience — “the music, the dancing, the acting, the costumes. I knew I wanted that in my life.”

She stepped onto a stage for the first time cast as Lucy Van Pelt in a Charlie Brown play.

“I was kind of a shy child,” she said. “But I felt happy on stage.I was never nervous.”

After that role as Lucy, Carsillo played several small parts in school performances. But her drama teachers saw something in her when she had a tiny part in a musical production.

“My drama teacher encouraged me to improvise,” Carsillo said. “She told me to just take it and go with it. That was my introduction to improvisation. I loved that freedom.”

In the fourth grade, Carsillo got the chance to choose any musical instrument to learn to play at school. For her, there was no other choice than the violin. Just like watching “The Nutcracker” inspired her to dance, watching a young woman play the violin lit another fire in her.

“I was, ‘Ooooh, yes!’ So I went home and told my parents I wanted to play violin. They were like, ‘That’s sweet, but what happened to wanting to be a Vallerina?’”

Her parents fostered this new passion, and Carsillo nurtured both for a while. When she auditioned and was accepted at the Young Conservatory at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, she spent the summer juggling acting and playing the violin. Her acting teachers told her she was doing too much music. Her violin teacher told her she was doing too much acting. Her parents told her it was time to make a choice.

She chose the violin. “I guess because acting came so easily to me, I didn’t value it as much,” she said. “Violin was so hard. I took to it well. But there is so much that goes into it… so much more I wanted to learn.”

Carsillo still considers herself a student of the violin. “I can’t perfect it,” she said. “I can play well, and I have played at Carnegie Hall and many other great venues, but I will always be striving for perfection. And I will never reach it.”

But Carsillo never lost her passion for acting, either. Her mind would often drift to thinking about the kinds of roles she longed to play if she were an actor, especially during bouts of tendinitis when she had to limit her concertizing. Carsillo began to ask herself why she couldn’t do both. As she and Butterman traveled the country with their music careers, she began to explore acting again. She was signed by an acting agency, and right away landed some commercials. But she also had to decline several jobs, including a good movie role, because of her commitments with the violin.

“I said to myself, ‘Why did I ever think this is going to happen? I knew I could do it; I just didn’t have time for the opportunities.”

The Music Directorship of the symphony brought Carsillo and Butterman to Shreveport in 2006, at which point Carsillo was concentrating on balancing motherhood of a two-year-old with a violin career. Their daughter, Olivia (“Bunny”), later excelled as a competitive dancer and an actress at Shreveport Little Theater Academy. It stirred something in Carsillo.

“I saw how much fun she was having onstage, but I could kind of feel I was a little more into it for her than she was,” Carsillo said. “She loved it, but I was SO into it. I decided I should pay attention as to why.”

Bunny was homeschooled while Carsillo and Butterman both traveled the country for performances. When Bunny decided to attend public school in the eighth grade, that necessitated Carsillo to stay in Shreveport with her. Without homeschooling duties, she had a lot more free time during the day, but found she couldn’t physically add seven more hours of violin to her routine.

Carsillo was asked by the Shreveport Opera to play the title role in “Fiddler on the Roof.” She enjoyed her experience so much that she prepared a monologue and answered an open call at Shreveport Little Theatre. John Daniel cast her as the lead in “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” a play by Sarah Ruhl. “It was like coming home,” she said of being on stage again. “It was so comfortable. I had been out of that whole scene for so long. I don’t know what made me think I could do it. But it all came back.” Carsillo has been in seven theatre productions at SLT, including starring roles in the musicals “MAMMA MIA!” and Steve Martin’s “Bright Star.” She also won Bravo! Awards for Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the 2018-19 season.

Carsillo also began hearing about something called Film Prize. As with everything else in her life, she dove straight into the deep end. She worked with fellow “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” actor Camille Gladney to create the short film Gloria for the 2018 Louisiana Film Prize.

It won a Founders Circle award that year. It also launched Carsillo into an even broader array of creative outlets.

Since 2018, she has acted in twenty films to date (more are in the works), including several shorts that have been Official Selections at Film Prize. Carsillo has performed a variety of on and off-screen roles for a number of other Film Prize (and feature length) projects. In 2019, she starred as her great-grandmother in St. Esther Day, which she co-wrote with Gladney. The following two years, Carsillo appeared in and composed/ performed the music for writer-director Abigail Kruger’s films, Green’s Alley and Amber the Acrobat, part of a trilogy of films that premiered at Film Prize. Amber the Acrobat has screened in film festivals around the world, including the Berlin Short Film Festival, Berlin and Amsterdam Lift Off Film Festivals, Wisconsin Film Festival, and Berlin Art Film Festival. Carsillo will soon represent the short at the Hollywood Florida Film Festival. Attending film festivals is something Carsillo enjoys greatly, as it allows her to meet other filmmakers and “see all the creativity in independent film, which is really inspiring.”

For this year’s Film Prize, she played a British character, Corporal Shawcross, in the Top 5 Film Bamber Bridge, a World War II-era short film that explored the issue of racism, by 2021 Grand-Prize winner Mark Bonner. And Carsillo received a special gift herself as she was altering the costume Bonner provided, a genuine World War II uniform. “I found some secrets in the pocket,” she said. “That was the coolest thing ever. I reached my hand in and I pulled out this art deco lighter. I just burst out crying. It was so emotional to think that was actually used by a soldier. I also pulled out an old British coin from the breast pocket. I just popped them back in and said, ‘This is for the next person that gets to wear this costume.’”

Carsillo said she is grateful to Shreveport for giving her the opportunity to embrace all of her artistic interests. “There are so many motivated people here, and it has been fun to pool our talents to create art, be it for the stage or screen. I have been so fortunate to do so many different things: story writing, scriptwriting, producing, costumes, helping with art design. And in the world of performing, acting, dancing, singing, violin, and composing. I’m thrilled to have really unique opportunities here in Shreveport.” But since the pandemic, Carsillo says that acting auditions are mostly taped, so she’s been able to take advantage of callbacks and projects throughout the country. Case in point, Carsillo just booked a beauty campaign for Bambu Earth, a brand she has admired for its safe ingredients and belief that beauty shines through healthy, natural skin.

Whatever role she is playing, Carsillo has one goal when it comes to her audience. “The thing that has been important to me—in whatever endeavor—is to infuse my passion for the activity into it,” she said. “I want them to feel how important it is.”

Shreveport native Jordan Davis is a mainstay on country radio with song “Buy Dirt,” his collaboration with five-time Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan. Davis was nominated for the 2022 CMA Awards for both Single of the Year and Song of the Year. Jordan Davis wrote the song with his brother Jacob Davis and brothers Josh and Matt Jenkins. Jordan has played the Grand Ole Opry and arenas across the country. But there is one venue he still longs to experience — Shreveport’s Municipal Auditorium. “I don’t think I have ever even seen a concert there,” Davis said. “I’m sure my dad would tell me I am wrong. But that’s such a special room.”

Before a recent concert in Omaha, Nebraska, the 34-year-old singer-songwriter reflected on his childhood in Shreveport and the city’s rich musical heritage that helped shape who he is today.

His upbringing “was about as ideal as you can get.” “Me and my brother were talking about it the other day,” he said. “We played all-day wiffle ball tournaments in the summer in our neighborhood. We rode our bikes down there. We spent our weekends at Cross Lake, and my dad would get the boat out. We went to minor-league baseball games all summer.”

Jordan’s mother, Luwanna Davis, still remembers those days in the Broadmoor neighborhood, close to A.C. Steere Elementary School. “We found an older home and were fortunate enough to purchase it,” she said. “We raised our three kids there. We talked about moving out to Ellerbe Road. When you get your kids to a certain age, you think about upgrading. But that was a long way to town.”

“We had sweet neighbors. When Jordan or (his older brother) Jacob wanted to ride bikes to someone’s house, I would call their folks and let them know they were on the way. And they would call me to tell me they were on the way home.”

“My uncle was singer-songwriter,” Davis said. “Country music was always part of the family. I didn’t get into it until after college when I saw Don Williams at The Strand. But you can’t love country music and not know how Shreveport impacted the genre.”

It’s another element
of his upbringing he credits to his hometown. “I don’t think I would have grown up in such a musical household without living in such a rich musical city,” he said. “From an early age, my dad would talk about the Hayride. He was a big Elvis Presley fan. He had so many Elvis stories, about him being in Shreveport. As I got older, I was close enough to pick up Pat Green in my middle school years. And being in Louisiana, the Southern rock’n’ roll — the Allman Brothers and Tom Petty. Being around a musical family, there was always some I was dipping into that I’d never heard.”

Davis said he remains a fan of many of the artists his father introduced to him, including Elvis, Kris Kristofferson, and Jim Croce. Looking back, he recalls the one artist he would have liked most to see in the historic Municipal Auditorium. “My dad was big John Prine fan,” Davis said.
“He got me into Prine early on. Seeing someone like that there would be really cool. There’s such a storyteller vibe to that room.”

But his greatest influence to become a songwriter was even closer to home. “I really think it was my uncle having such an influence on me and my brother, Jacob,” Davis said. “We always knew you could make a living writing music. We knew it was a path for us, and that we had a gene for it.” Jordan graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 2006. Marilyn Prothro, assistant principal at Byrd, has followed Davis since his days as a Yellow Jacket. She saw him in concert most recently in June at the Brookshire’s Grocery Arena in Bossier City, when he opened for Brooks & Dunn.

“Jordan was an all-around great guy,” she recalls. “He excelled in football and baseball. He always had a smile. He always helped everybody, and he always had lots of friends. He’s still that same kid he was in high school.” That, too, is part of the family tradition, Prothro said. “His whole family is like that,” she said. “He comes from good people. His brother, Jacob… he’s amazing too. And their younger sister, Gentry. I tell them, ‘You boys are amazing, but Gentry’s got my heart.’” Stephanie Spring was Davis’ English and drama teacher at Byrd. “He was a good student, but definitely loved to make people laugh,” she said. Prothro and Springer both celebrate Jordan’s success, even if they didn’t see it coming. “Oh my goodness no,” Prothro said. “I mean, I knew he’d be successful. He’s a fantastic kid. But this is so exciting.”

“I am not surprised he’s in a creative field,” Springer said. “I didn’t know about his passion for writing and music. But it’s not surprising that he found success in it.” Luwanna saw a quiet confidence in everything her middle child did, even if she didn’t see stardom back then. “You knew he was artistic, but this direction that he’s taken, I would have never ever thought that,” she said. “Jordan was a leader, but he wasn’t a forceful leader. People just wanted to be around him and do good because they liked him.” After Byrd, Davis moved to Baton Rouge to go to LSU. He got a degree in environmental science, one of his mom’s requirements before he pursued his dreams. “The rule was you have to get a degree, then go be a rockstar,” Luwanna

Whatever Jacob did, Jordan wanted to do too.”

But performing was something of an afterthought, Jordan said. “I never dreamed I’d be an artist,” he said. “But after six years and no money, I needed to figure something out. I was bartending at night and writing songs in the day. I said, ’I don’t know how to do this, but I’ve got to start playing shows. I am going to do this artist thing and see if it works out.’”

It did work out for him, with the help of people like Stephanie Wright at Universal Music Group, even if the beginning was a little rough. “I went in and played her a song,” Davis said. “She said, ‘I want to see you play a concert.’ I’d never played a show before. I didn’t tell her that. I told her I had done a show. She knew, though. She said after that first show, ‘You’re really green.’ But she still believed in me.” Another one of those believers was Robert Filhart with ASCAP. Luwanna recalls having dinner with Filhart on the first trip she and Gentry took to visit the boys in Nashville.

“I told Robert, ‘I can’t believe Jordan has moved here’,” she said. “There was no glimmer of hope he was going to be OK. Robert said, ‘Mrs. Lou, have you had to pay any of his bills?’ I said, ‘No, but I don’t think he eats right.’ Robert said, ‘He stopped out there, and he’s chasing a dream — living in Nashville, writing songs and getting into rooms with good songwriters.”

Davis said that to this day he remains more of a songwriter than a performer. But he has found the right people to develop both sides of his talent.

“Nobody will ever say I am a great guitar player, but I can get around on one,” he said with a dry laugh. “Every songwriter is an artist. It’s always been there. I just had to find the right people to bring it out in me. Now I am too far in it to turn around.”

Davis released his first album in 2018. The record produced three number one hits: “Slow Dance in a Parking Lot,” “Take It From Me,” and “Singles You Up.” The album propelled him into the national spotlight. But the name of the album came straight from his roots. “My first album is called Home State,” he said. “It comes from my upbringing in Shreveport, those high school years, and the stories that come from those years. As I was naming the album, Louisiana kept coming to mind.” Home State put Davis on the fast track to country stardom. But as that train was pulling out of the station and picking up steam, the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 put the brakes on and slowed things down a bit.

I think, for me, it put me in a weird headspace. I’d never been home that much. It was a weird transition, even for my wife for me to be around that much. Not to mention dealing with a pandemic and the shutdown. It was tough for us.”

To cope with the pandemic, the social unrest at the time, and an unprecedented election cycle, Davis turned to writing again. The result was his follow-up EP, Buy Dirt. The title track is a collaboration with Luke Bryan, a contemporary he listened to on the radio growing up. Their friendship grew through the years as they ran into each other at awards shows and golf courses. The lyrics reflect their shared values about life, Davis said, and he is proud of the results. “I am hoping to win a CMA with that one,” he said. “To be able to have a song with him is really cool.” Buy Dirt also features Davis’ short version of Prine’s song “Blow up Your TV.”

“Danielle is unreal,” he said. “She is a great person. ‘Midnight Crisis’ is one we both love. I loved getting to work with her. It was really organic and never felt forced.” He looks forward to more collaborations in the future, even crossing genres. “Julia (Michaels) is more on the pop side, which is cool,” he said. “I look at artists outside country music. Alicia Keys is one of the most talented musician-singer-songwriters to live. That would be a dream collaboration. But you’ve got to have the song. If you have the song, you’ll find who fits it right.”

And Davis believes having the right song means having a great story, no matter what genre you sing in. “The story is the key
to any great song,” he said. “What’s cool about the people from Elvis Presley to Kris Kristofferson is their unique way of telling a story. John Prine tells story totally different than Elvis. It could be the same topic, but it’s the way they go about it. That’s what I try to carry on. I try to tell stories in a different way that can resonate with listeners and reflect where I am coming from.”

And Davis will always be coming from Shreveport and his north Louisiana roots. It’s why he calls his fan club The Parish.

“I don’t think there is anybody else more proud to be from Louisiana than me,” he said. “I am a very proud Louisianan. I am proud of my hometown. I try to carry a little of that everywhere I go. It has given me so much. Not just the childhood and so many friends and memories but growing up in a city that’s so rich in country music history. That’s just a way for fans to get to know me a little better.”

Collectively, the mission at Robinson Film Center is to “educate, enrich and entertain this region through the medium of film,” Riley said. Personally, it is an opportunity for him to merge two lifelong passions. “Education is the first step,” Riley said. “I have the ability to do the thing that I love, which is being near to the film industry and participate in the film industry, but also to help other people through film literacy for the community.”

For Riley, serving as the executive director of Robinson Film Center is the dream job he didn’t dream existed as a child growing up in Trinidad and Tobago. “When I was a kid, I had a passion for the arts and humanities,” he said. “But I couldn’t see a pathway for me as a young person to have a viable career in the entertainment industry, where I am successful and able to take care of my family.”

He is committed to showing that path to young people in Shreveport and Bossier City. “There are many kids in Shreveport- Bossier who don’t have those pathways,” he said. “Maybe if we provided those pathways, we may be able to put our arms around some kids who otherwise would ultimately get thrown to the wayside or end up in unfulfilling careers or jobs.”

Riley was raised by his single mother in Port of Spain, the capital city of the small, Caribbean island nation. Instead of going to a large, multi-screen cineplex, Riley had access to about 10 intimate movie houses within walking distance of his house. What he discovered in those movie houses shaped his world view.

“It just felt completely random, but perfect,” he said. “Each cinema house had a different theme. One would show A movies, one would show B movies, one would show older films, one would show martial arts films, one would

Riley engrossed himself in cinema. He collected Starlog, Fangoria, and any other fan magazines he could get his hands on. Film unlocked his creativity.

But his mom had other plans. “I was deemed the academic in the family,” he said. “In the British system, which we have in Trinidad because we were once a colony of Great Britain, you pick your subjects very early on in life. You pick your major essentially in high school. I wanted to do all the humanities stuff. I wanted to do literature and art. My mom was like, ‘No, you’re going to do business.’” He did study business in high school. When he came to America for college, he chose to major in marketing. “I had the dream of working in advertising — working in Manhattan or something like that,” he said.

That dream didn’t last long. “After graduating with my marketing degree, I realized that for every one of me there were 200,000 other marketing graduates all over the country,” he said. “I sort of aimlessly wandered the wilderness of corporate America — working in jobs I was not really happy in. I am someone who, if I am not passionate about something, it’s really hard to motivate myself, even if I have an aptitude for it. I was probably a terrible employee back then.”

Riley earned an MBA in his late 20s. That’s when he arrived in Shreveport, still unsure of his future. “I sort of stumbled into Moonbot Studios,” Riley said. “They actually hired me to help them with their HR. They were a growing studio at that time. They had just won the Oscar. They were staffing up to do more productions. I came on and said I could do HR. That was mostly true.”

Riley helped Moonbot recruit animators to Shreveport, “versus going to Hollywood, or New York, or Montreal — terrible cities like that.” As the studio grew, so did his opportunity to advance. “We lost one of our production managers,” he recalls. “At the time, I basically walked into my boss’s office and said, ‘I think I could probably do this job.’ He looked at me and said, ‘I think you can as well. Let me think about it, and I will get back to you tomorrow.’ The next day I went in, and he said, ‘I am going to give you a shot.’ That was sort of the beginning of my journey in film and entertainment.”

He had found the place where his vocation became his avocation. “I remember my first couple of months there,” he said. “The Oscar statue was sitting there on a big desk. So, you’d walk by it every time you went to the kitchen. I wanted to touch it, but I had this image in my mind that these bars would drop, and alarms would go off. That’s how much it meant to me as a young nerd who found the place that suddenly made sense.

“I was terrified that they would send me home. I was more scared somebody would pull me in their office and say, ‘You can’t come back tomorrow.’ That’s how much it meant all of a sudden. It changed the trajectory of my life.”

The curtain ultimately fell on that chapter of his life when Moonbot Studios went out of business. Riley considered following some of his co-workers to Dallas, where they were starting another animation studio. But at that point he was co-parenting a daughter with his ex-wife. Staying in Shreveport became more important, “even though it meant putting that part of my career on pause,” he said.

Finding a new role was difficult with no other animation studios in town. “My resume was this strange mix of this random business stuff and award winning animation producer,” he said. “Nobody knew what to do with me. I wouldn’t get callbacks for interviews or anything like that.”

One man did know what to do with Riley. That man was Gregory Kallenberg, executive director of Rational Middle and the Prize Foundation, who was producing a documentary series on immigration at the time. Riley jumped so quickly at the opportunity that the subject matter did not resonate with him initially.

“That was another amazing opportunity for me,” Riley said. “I never imagined a career in documentary filmmaking. Then, throughout that process, it became this other personal journey of discovery for me because we were talking about issues that were near and dear to my heart as an immigrant in this nation.”

Riley left Rational Middle as the rigorous travel schedule took a toll on family life in Shreveport. But Kallenberg remains a staunch supporter of Riley in his current position. “Wendell has been a Prize brother and a Rational Middle brother,” Kallenberg said. “We have fought a lot on the front lines together. Wendell burns bright. He is a bright spirit who is incredibly important to our community. I can’t think of a better, more forthright person to walk alongside than Wendell. The RFC is one of the most important entities in north Louisiana. The fact they have found Wendell is something that is incredibly exciting to me.”

After Rational Middle, Riley became media and external relations director at LSU Shreveport. There, he got to combine his creativity with his business acumen in support of another of his passions — education. “I am a firm believer in the value of education,” says Riley. According to LSUS Chancellor Larry Clark, “Wendell was vital in elevating LSU Shreveport in this community. His unique background made him an asset to me and the University.”

“When RFC eventually came calling, it slowly kind of dawned on me that this role would allow me to seamlessly blend the two,” said Riley. As the executive director of the Robinson Film Center, Riley wants to play a role in recruiting, fostering and growing filmmakers and the film industry in Shreveport. As a movie lover, he wants to inspire the appreciation for cinema that has fueled him since childhood. “There is something about film that is the thing for me,” Riley said. “It’s the combination of so many other art forms. Even bad movies are still fulfilling for me.

“I want that for everyone. However you engage with film. Whether you like going to the movies as a collective experience, where you go with your friends and have a great time. You like watching movies with big audiences where everybody’s reacting and yelling at the screen and laughing when you’re supposed to. Or if you are like me, who prefers a matinee where I can sit in the very middle of the theater with very few people in there. Man, there’s nothing like it. It’s magical thing.”
