People don’t realize how impactful a beautiful smile can be until the confidence to smile has been lost. A lack of confidence causes a domino effect of painful experiences for even the most upbeat individual. Dr. Luis M. Alvarado of LA Prosthetic Dentistry has given confidence back to people for years. He has practiced as a prosthodontist in New Orleans and Seattle and recently settled in SBC with his wife and family. Since February 2023, LA Prosthetic Dentistry has been located on Kayla Street in Shreveport. They offer state-of-the-art full-mouth rehabilitation services where all treatment plans are tailored to each patient.

When it comes to prosthodontics, LA Prosthetic Dentistry is in a class of its own in Northwest Louisiana. Dr. Alvarado completed a 3-year residency training in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of Connecticut and then obtained another 2-year residency training program in Prosthodontics at LSU. This degree in prosthodontics gives Dr. Alvarado the advantage of being an expert in both highly complex and highly esthetic cases. Dr. Alvarado explains, “We are the only full-time prosthodontics practice in a three-hour radius from Shreveport. We design all of our cases digitally in-house, and we have milling and 3-D printing capabilities to assure quality control.” Dr. Alvarado and the LA Prosthetic Dentistry staff believe that the sky is the limit for their practice. The practice employs five people, including one dental hygienist and four amazing assistants who perform various tasks from chairside assisting to administrative duties and digital dentistry. “Our goal is to work alongside the referring dentists to become an extension to them for the more complex cases,” says Dr. Alvarado. “We have expanded our services to implant placement and restoration to allow for more accessible treatment.”

It is always gratifying to see them smile for the first time,” says Dr. Alvarado. “Giving someone their smile back and seeing patients hold their heads high is why I do this.”

He said if you pull the starter off, I’ll get it rebuilt, and you can put it back on. That started my love for classic cars. That Lincoln was my very first car, and I still have that car.” Fondren’s love for classic cars and his son Mason’s love for music and guitars has evolved into Fondren’s Classic Cars & Guitars.
Around a year ago, Fondren and his wife and children started Fondren’s Classic Cars & Guitars as a new division of one of their companies, Elite Auto Dealership. They purchased a property in Minden, and the dream began growing from there. Fondren explains, “The building we bought used to be an outdoor store that also sold guns, so there was already a big area set up that could hold guitars.
Mason started putting guitars in that area, so we decided to call the location Fondren’s Classic Cars & Guitars. We never realized how well classic cars and guitars would go together.” As the business took off, they moved Fondren’s Classic Cars & Guitars to their existing location at 2915 Youree Dr and shifted Elite Auto, across their large lot to the south building.

Donnie Opperman, their guitar tech, and Mason, work diligently to handle all guitar needs for every customer. There is even a jam room where musicians can try out different guitars before they buy. Being that the business is family owned, whenever a customer is buying or selling a car or guitar, they will always deal with at least one of the owners. They employ about 15 people. Fondren and his wife, Ashley, are there daily, and his oldest daughter, Ciara, is at the front desk handling the office affairs. Says Fondren, “We have a relationship with every one of our customers. We talk a lot with them, and we get to know their lives and their stories. It gives customers a totally different sense because of the personalization.”
They are currently working on bringing back their Cruise Nights. A few years ago, Fondren’s Classic Cars & Guitars had mini car shows every third Saturday night. This time, they’re building a stage on their south patio to bring live music to Cruise Nights. The event has brought together some 200-300 people in past years. Fondren’s has every reason to be optimistic about what’s to come. Fondrens exclaims, “This is my passion. This is what I love to do. This is what keeps me going,

School is hard when students start out – whether entering Kindergarten, sixth grade, ninth grade, or graduating and looking towards their futures. Students have to sit at desks, pay attention, cooperate, be nice, and, oh yes – Learn Things. It’s no wonder the state-wide test scores are a concern to school and district administrators.

But sometimes, students manage all these tasks, plus many more, and make it seem and look easy. They achieve academically, are involved in extracurricular activities, have no discipline issues, and are well-regarded by their teachers.
who is in the Gifted and Talented Arts programs at school and has had straight A’s his entire life. He plays tennis and soccer, loves art, and is a serious rock collector. Introduced to rocks by his 4th-grade teacher, he has attended the area’s Gem and Mineral Show and has purchased several semi-precious stones, such as rose quartz and amethyst geodes. Bhavik is a chicken wing lover, a reader of fantasy books, a video game player, and a local Orff instrument group member. He is a member of his school’s cross-country team and Lighthouse Club, a leadership organization.

College plans for Bhavik include going to Duke University; he says that the school excels in academics and sports. He wants to be an anesthesiologist like his mom. She has shared several child-based books on the subject, which Bhavik has read and finds very interesting. He is good at soccer and tennis, is a Boy Scout, and loves giving back to his community and respecting nature. His favorite subject is Social Studies; he has had a passion for history and geography since he was young. Math is a close second to Social Studies; he believes that math teaches one “real-world skills.” He doesn’t have a least favorite – he likes all of his school subjects.

To Bhavik, the hardest thing about 5th grade is how organized one has to be: staying prepared and mentally strong. He said that 5th grade “preps you for middle and high school; you can’t have bad habits.” The best thing about 5th grade is the graduation and finale, which includes a field trip and party. He would like to advise younger students to “keep doing what you are doing to be successful. Be organized and prepared; even if you hit a brick wall, you can still achieve if you don’t give up.”

Eighth-grader Luka is a student & at Caddo Middle Magnet

Who is also in the Gifted program at school. While he currently has straight A’s, he admits that he might have gotten three B’s while in the 3rd grade. His favorite subjects are Science and Math; he wants to be an astronomer or astrophysicist. He says that “all our problems can be solved by space. I want to make a major contribution.” He sees himselfas an adult “in a room doing math and science, and figuring out the mysteries of the world and helping the world.” He likes all his other subjects equally. For fun, Luka says, “all academics are fun.” He likes working with Legos, is on the Quiz Bowl for the area, and loves to fence. He is a Boy Scout and will soon be an Eagle Scout. His fellow Scouts have been his best friends since elementary school; he loves hiking and connecting with the outside world.

Luka enjoys reading the classics “Mysterious Island,” “Kim,” and “Animal Farm,” and works by Alexandre Dumas, J. D. Salinger, and Jules Verne. In the classics, they had a different way of thinking.” He plays the French Horn, listens to classical music, and is in the Honor Band. “Music is another way to let emotions out.” The “Star Wars” franchise is his absolute favorite, plus he collects Star Wars Lego action figures.

The hardest thing about 8th grade, Luka feels, is the responsibility. “I suddenly have a lot more responsibility in this grade: becoming more independent, transitioning to High School, and moving toward complete independence.” The easiest thing for him is his friend relationships. “I’ve known them so long we can tell each other anything.” He says that he is good at board games and has even invented one of his own. He said that every night is game night or movie night at his house. He advises younger students: “Don’t just follow dreams but push toward them. If you want to become the best in your field, don’t slack off. Believe in yourself and persevere 150%. Pour your passion into your soul – that’s how you achieve things in life.”

Analyce is a 17-year-old Senior in high school

who not only has career goals firmly in place, but she also has created several local and school-based organizations and fundraisers to benefit her community. After her mother’s successful battle against cancer, Analyce founded a fundraising campaign called “Cupcakes for a Cure,” designed to raise money for access to mammography for women. In October, she baked, decorated, and sold cupcakes to help fund mammogram equipment; from 2020 to 2023, over $5000 was raised for the North Caddo Medical Center for their Mammography Center. Analyce founded the P-7 club in her sophomore year, a faith-based group designed to give students access to Bible devotionals and outreach. She is also on the Student Council, Interact Club, Beta Club, Environmental Club, Yearbook staff, Million Word Club, North Caddo Scholars, Educators Rising, and National Honor Society. She is academically in the Gifted and Talented Arts programs for Music and Drama. Analyce has been involved in Mission projects including Reach Out America, to benefit victims of the Maui fire.

Analyce is looking forward to a career in education; she plans to attend Louisiana State University in Shreveport for her undergraduate and master’s degrees. Her goal is to be an elementary school teacher at North Caddo Elementary/Middle School. A native of Vivian, she loves her community and would love the opportunity to continue serving it as an adult and making a difference in the area. She is an avid reader, loves crawfish and old musicals, and has a passion for music. She has been playing piano since she was six years old, has served as a worship leader and pianist for her church, loves to sing, and enjoys traveling on family vacations. Her favorite subject is English; she loves writing and communicating with others through writing. If she were made to choose a least favorite subject, she would pick “maybe Science?”

The best thing about being a Senior, to Analyce, is being able to be an example for her lower classmates. She is always working on growing her skills. She is not looking forward to leaving the connections she’s made in high school, nor the organizations she’s helped create and been a part of. She has a twin brother who is neck-and-neck in the race with her towards Valedictorian; she calls him her best friend. Her advice to a past self is this: “Trials will be footsteps toward your future success and involvement.” Analyce is centered, optimistic, happy, and looking forward to what the future has in store for her.

The process to become Student of the Year is rigorous. After being nominated by a teacher and selected at the school level, the students must submit essays and educational achievements, undergo interviews, and show themselves as leaders in their grades. Once selected at the district level, the students compete at the state level in hopes of becoming the state-wide Students of the Year. Our best wishes are for these students to achieve this goal in their life-long journeys toward greatness.

“I salvaged a Vaudeville sign-in board from the trash dumped into the back alley, which is now displayed at The Strand. I knew the theatre was originally built as a vaudeville house featuring vaudeville acts on the circuit.”

So, how did The Strand come about? Way back in 1900, the Saenger brothers, who were sons of a local rabbi and owners of a drug store in downtown Shreveport, got together with the Ehrlich brothers, who owned a theater on Milam Street. For their first adventure, the four decided to go all in and open the Saenger Theatre on Milam.

A couple of decades later, The Strand would become the “mothership” of all the Saenger enterprises, which included 360 theaters across the south.

The Strand officially opened on July 3, 1925, after 19 months of construction, with the opera The Chocolate Soldier.

Originally a movie theatre and vaudeville house, The Strand was where Hill went to movies in the 1960s and ’70s. “My goal is to leave it better than I found it,” says Hill. The ’70s were a tough time for The Strand, though. “Plaster fell. At one point, so much water was collecting in the basement that lily pads were growing.”

The two partnered with local attorney Judd Tooke and the community to restore the building and make it better than ever. Seven years and nearly $10 million later, The Strand reopened, giving us a chance to make more memories. Jenifer Hill recalls when Loretta Swit, who earned two Emmy Awards for her work on M*A*S*H as Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan, arrived at The Strand early to hang out before her performance. “I remember I had to make an announcement on stage. I was nervous about it, and Loretta said to me, ‘Don’t worry about it. These people give you the money. They need to know you.”

“I quit worrying about it from there on out.” As far as deciding what shows play at The Strand, Hills says they shoot for a variety. “We can bring in comedians all day long,” Hill says. But it needs to be different. “We are rethinking our approach. Our board is 18 people, and our season consists of shows I and the board choose. “Do I think it will sell here?’ Shreveport is a one-night town. “How much can we get for it?’ That’s all a negotiation process.”

The Strand also factors logistics into the equation.

I hear of many older theaters with the same issues.” Hill and the board choose the shows for the Strand-presented season, but they also have “rentals” who contact the theatre to bring in performers. For instance, that’s how they got Chris D’Elia and Kevin Hart earlier this year. So, the show must go on, right? 99.999% of the time, yes. There was one occasion, however, where things didn’t go as planned. Hill says, “We only had one show we had to stop. It was last summer.”

It was due to — get this — our North Louisiana weather. Can you believe that? Of course you can! Anyone living here for more than a day knows the unpredictability of Mother Nature in our parts. “The rain came down at 4:45 p.m.,” says Hill. “The show started at 5 p.m.” Water started coming into the basement of The Strand. And the pumps in the basement couldn’t keep up. “People in the house don’t know what’s going on. I had to go on stage looking like a drowned rat and announce that there wouldn’t be a show tonight.” Live theater. 100 years and only one performance was canceled. I’d say that’s pretty good.

Jenifer Hill has clearly poured her heart and soul into that building. Jim Montgomery, Virginia Shehee, and Judd Tooke did, too. Thank goodness they cared enough to preserve The Strand; they deserve a standing ovation from us all. I can’t wait to see what’s on tap for their 40th season. I know I’m not the only one.

Red Ball offered oxygen services to hospitals during the trying times of COVID.

When the snowstorm of 2021 hit our area, Red Ball delivered hydrogen with the assistance of state police and the National Guard. Their three ISO accreditations are a testament to their dedication to unsurpassed service. In addition, the Red Ball Oxygen specialty gas division is growing by leaps and bounds. “We have a whole division that makes incredibly technical specialty gases and sells EPA protocol gases. Born and raised in Springhill, she would often visit Minden and remembered the quaint north Louisiana town filled with scores of historic homes, all filled with loads of charm and hospitality. Sara left Webster Parish after high school, vowing never to return.

Then, in December of 2014, while visiting with family for the holidays, she drove past a completely broken down, dilapidated 1920s cottage on the edge of downtown—overtaken by red tip photinias, oak trees, azaleas, daffodils, and poison ivy—abandoned for nearly a decade.

Barely visible behind an overgrown tangle of trees, bushes, and vines—the worn and weathered porch gave way to a maze of tiny rooms piled floor-to-ceiling with years of discarded belongings, long-forgotten papers, and covered furniture. But even the caved ceilings, rotting wood, and animals in the attic didn’t deter Sara—as she envisioned only the beauty the 1926 cottage once was and could become again.

“I was unequivocally smitten,” Sara wrote on her website Simply Southern Cottage, which documented her restoration of the home. “I felt the draw and knew it was supposed to be my home. But it was in bad shape. It was rotten on the outside, the roof was bad, and the ceiling was caving in.”

Unfortunately, it was not for sale.

For the next two years she tried convincing the owners, whose family had owned the property for over 90 years, to sell it. The process proved extremely challenging, even for Sara, a woman of great faith. But her “pleasant persistence” as she describes it, paid off, and she finally purchased the cottage in September 2016.

Upon buying the property, Sara began a full, “down to the studs” restoration. She put on a tin roof, and installed new plumbing, electrical, insulation and HVAC. Three layers of wallpaper, cheesecloth and paneling were torn out, revealing 90+ year-old shiplap. All the existing light fixtures were restored and reused.

She removed walls on the first floor to open it up and make the kitchen larger and turned the open attic into a functional living space for guests. “I repurposed as many of the original details and architecture as possible,” she admits. “Every interior door of the cottage is original. The fireplace mantel was relocated to a more functional location. I added a big, ole southern back porch.”

As the layers of filth, dirt and clutter were peeled away, unique architectural details were discovered, as well an interesting piece of history. As the original hardwood floors were being removed to be refinished, Sara found a document titled “The Autobiography of Belle Howard Mayfield” hidden in the floorboards. The autobiography details happy and painful memories of Mayfield’s childhood, her marriage, and the birth of her children. The details of which Sara published to her website.

Other bits of history are made use of within the house. The kitchen island is made from reclaimed wood, locker baskets from Springhill High School are used above her mud bench and her greenhouse is made from the original windows of the house.

Sara said she never felt overwhelmed as she took on the project, and she encourages anyone in the market for a new home to consider taking on similar undertakings. “Do it. Don’t hesitate,” she says, “There are so many houses that are just sitting vacant. Don’t be afraid. It is so rewarding to bring something back to life and houses aren’t built like this anymore.”

Step inside to see this beautiful cottage with lots of charm, both inside and out. Every room offers a bit of a surprise—delivering interesting decor that engages everyone who sets foot in the space. And while Sara brought in a little bit of a funky flair, there’s also a lot of nostalgia worth pointing out.

From the front porch to the direct, unobstructed passageways between living areas, the almost 2,400-square-foot, 4-bedroom, 2-and-a-half-bath home is designed to make moving around as smooth as possible. Sara thought through every detail, down to the back porch bed-swing—one of her favorite places to relax. “It’s attractive and quaint,” she explains. “I wanted it to have a cozy warmth, to feel like it hugs you when you are there.”

Take Design Cues from the Landscape

If there was ever a porch that begged for views, it’s this one. “When people are here, I want them to soak in the beauty all around them,” Sara says. “The setting is amazing, and the landscape plays off that. I get asked a lot, “Why the yellow door?” Simply put, I wanted a bright, cheery, colorful, and inviting exterior. This yellow door exudes joy and positivity and anyone who sees it, just has to smile.”

The landscape, too, is welcoming with ‘Dwarf Burford’ hollies and trailing vinca along the front porch, complimented by crape myrtles, dwarf gardenias, and liriope on the ends. A pale blue on the beaded-board porch ceiling stems from Southern folklore that the hue repels everything from ghosts to insects. Sara brings dinner guests out on the porch here to relax with dessert and coffee.

Fine-Tune the Details

“Lighting gives the home a little bit of edge,” Sara says. “I just took a few more risks—doing things differently than one might have and it really set the tone for the rest of the house.” Sara considers the windmill-inspired ceiling fan a worthwhile splurge as the statement piece for the master bedroom, a tranquil retreat thanks to her use of minimal color and warm wood tones against a white backdrop.

Don’t Be Afraid to Break with Trends

“I wanted to do something other than a typical island,” says Sara, who took inspiration from the cottage’s light hardwood floors when she settled on the revamped kitchen’s slightly more contemporary island. Shreveport Salvage built and stained the top a honey-blond hue that complements the floors. Light walls, casement windows, and a flat ceiling strike just the right balance and keep the space bright.

A spot to grow plants in the winter and enjoy the backyard in the summer, the new greenhouse is composed of the cottage’s original windows and is home to a wicker settee Sara found on the roadside. The master bath is a testament to the union of beauty and practicality: waterproof laminate planks provide the look of wood; the ladder towel rack was another roadside find; and the vintage-look chandelier is an Amazon purchase.

Embrace That Old-Home Soul

A deft mix of accessories and vintage furniture placed throughout lends the home an immediate sense of both history and personality. A pair of folding wood seats along one wall of the library was salvaged from a Michigan theater. Sara cleverly surrounded an oversize quote artwork with open books. “I used a lot of textural pieces to give the layered, lived-in feel—as well as to give the room some dimension.”

Lean Into the Lifestyle

The kitchen remodel entailed a new farmhouse sink with an old look, white cabinets topped with quartz countertops, and a trio of windows to usher in daylight and cooling breezes. In the upper-level bath, an antique vanity Sara found in a junk shop proved to be a perfect fit under the eaves and atop blue-and-white cement floor tiles that bring a punch of pretty pattern and color to the space.

Add a Touch of Whimsy

Throughout the house, Sara’s passion for combining family pieces with thrift store finds creates an air of welcoming, collected charm. Sara’s mother found the bench, knowing it would fit perfectly beneath this window beside the kitchen, and a friend made the pillows. Faux herbs wrapped in brown paper tied with twine bring simplicity and everlasting color to the kitchen windowsill.

“I love shopping garage sales the most because of the bargains,” she says. “But I’m very intentional. It’s not a huge investment and gives so much character. I feel like these spaces should be memorable. I want to keep my life—and surroundings—simple.”

One of Benjamin Franklin’s famous sayings was, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Yes, home maintenance means adding more chores to your list. But deferring maintenance is likely to be time consuming and costly. Performing home maintenance tasks can prevent larger problems or deterioration, extend the life and value of the property, and create a safe and comfortable place to live.

To make home maintenance less painful, include home maintenance costs in your monthly budget or set aside funds in your emergency savings account for unexpected repairs.

You can identify potential issues around the home when you engage in ongoing inspections of your property. Here are some ideas for keeping up with home maintenance:

Check the inside of your home for cracks, stains, or damage on your walls, ceilings, or floors. Follow recommended maintenance schedules for appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, ovens, and stoves. Clean and check fireplaces and chimneys. Install proper insulation and weatherstripping for energy efficiency.

Check the exterior of your home for cracks, leaks, or damage to the roof, brick, siding, gutters, downspouts, windows, doors, driveways, walkways, fences, foundation, and the overall structure.

Pest control is important to the maintenance of a home, keeping unwanted pests or creatures away from the home to prevent health problems to people or damage to the home and property. It’s a good idea to inspect areas inside and outside the home, install or repair screens and seal cracks and other potential places of entry. You can use insecticides, traps, baits, or call in professional pest control services.

Maintaining the trees in your yard is good for the health of the tree and helps prevent any safety issues. Pruning, mulching, fertilizing, and watering are all important parts of caring for trees, depending on type, age, and size of tree. Inspections help identify pest problems or disease. Consult a certified arborist to inspect and report on the health of your trees. A certified arborist focuses primarily on the long-term health and maintenance of trees, but also removes trees. An arborist can help you determine if a tree can be saved. A tree removal specialist primarily focuses on the safe and efficient removal of trees.

Maintain the lawn area by trimming trees and shrubs, cutting grass, cleaning out gutters, addressing any drainage issues, and inspecting the irrigation system.

Stay on top of safety measures. Some examples are installing, checking, repairing, or replacing smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, alarm systems, door and window locks, first aid kits, indoor and outdoor lighting, stairs, thresholds, and railings.

Regular cleaning and organizing the home can help with air quality by removing dust and allergens and keep furnishings and floorings in top condition.

Maintaining the plumbing in your home is essential for preventing issues, avoiding expensive repairs, and keeping the system in good operating condition. Consider hiring a professional plumber for periodic plumbing inspections. This typically includes ensuring proper water pressure, checking for leaks in pipes, fixtures, or appliances, checking water heaters, cleaning drains, and inspecting backflow prevention devices and shut-off valves, cleanouts, and access panels for accessing plumbing components.

Don’t mess with electricity! Call in a professional electrician to inspect your home’s electrical systems to keep your home safe or fix any issues. They can check for faulty wiring or loose connections, test outlets, replace worn out parts, and ensure proper grounding.

Keeping your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system properly maintained helps it run efficiently and save energy. Having it serviced once a year by a professional is recommended. Tasks may include cleaning or changing out filters, cleaning vents and ducts, checking thermostats, inspecting, and cleaning outdoor units and servicing the furnace.

Keep Up With Home Maintenance

Create a checklist so all areas and systems are reviewed.
Schedule your review of items on the checklist. Some areas may need to be reviewed more often than others.
Identify and address issues promptly.
Hire a professional when needed for repairs or replacements.
Keep receipts, records, and warranties for any work done.

Happy Homeownership!
