One of the best parts of publishing a community magazine is that I’m basically a professional friend-maker. It never fails right as I’m putting an issue together, something (or someone) amazing pops up, and I get so excited I have to cram them into the current issue. Our annual Top Doctors and Dentists issue was no exception.

During a recent appointment, I was finally able to meet Debra Allen from Radiology and Oncology Services in person, and let me tell you, we’re now besties. But the real surprise came when she introduced me to the sweetest, most gentle human on the planet. I was so taken with him that I decided on the spot: this man’s story needs to be told. So, meet Mr. Ed Owen, a man whose kindness shines so bright you almost need sunglasses. He’s the genuine article, a quiet hero working behind the scenes to bring comfort to patients going through tough times.

This issue is for all the doctors and dentists who work themselves to the bone to keep us healthy and happy. You’ll definitely want to keep this one handy—it’s basically a cheat sheet for finding someone who can fix your teeth, your bones, or whatever else life throws at you.

October! The weather is cooling off. Schools are off to a good start. People are decorating for Halloween and kids are working on their costumes. This month in SB Magazine, we are featuring two stories: one is heartwarming; one is heartbreaking. The first is about the Willis Knighton NICU, a doctor, a nurse, two mothers, and two premature babies. I don’t want to give away the ending, but I know you’ll love the outcome. The second story would be the perfect Halloween tale if it weren’t true. It’s about the murder of a young mother-to-be and a door to remind us how evil people can be.

October is also an issue that we are privileged to feature northwest Louisiana’s medical community. SB Magazines’ annual Top Doctors and Dentists issue has been your go-to guide for finding a doctor quickly. This year’s edition is no exception. Sure, finding reliable medical care may seem easy with the internet’s online directories. But with SB, you’ll get to know your doctors and their staff better as you see their pictures and read about their backgrounds and philosophies.
We have also posted a comprehensive list of the doctors, dentists, and other medical professional who received votes from their peers and their patients.

Board Certified Rheumatologist Robert E. Goodman, M.D. of the Arthritis & Rheumatology Clinic in Shreveport, has been caring for patients in our area for 35 years. Dr. Goodman combines his specialized training and experience with personalized care to provide patients with innovative approaches, leading- edge technology, and the latest treatment options for their condition. Board-certified in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Goodman received his undergraduate degree from LSU in Baton Rouge, and his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and his Rheumatology Fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

A member of the active medical staff of Willis-Knighton Health Systems, Dr. Goodman is a member of the American College of Rheumatology, American Society of Internal Medicine, American College of Physicians, Northwest Louisiana Medical Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Goodman also volunteers at Martin Luther King Health Center & Pharmacy in Shreveport (mlkhealth. org) where he has been a volunteer physician and supporter for over 32 years. He is a recipient of the MLK Health Center Humanitarian Award given in recognition of his dedicated service.
