Image Credit: Daniel Tuttle from Unsplash.

As important as looking after your home is, it can often feel complicated and even overwhelming. But, it doesn’t need to be. More than a few home maintenance tips could make it a lot more straightforward while keeping your home in great condition. Four of these stand out.

Check for Leaks & Water Damage

Being on the lookout for problems that could be relatively large if not dealt with quickly is always recommended. But, this can seem borderline impossible with the likes of your plumbing. It doesn’t need to be. Instead, it’s just a matter of being on the lookout for signs of water damage, which will indicate a leak.

Usually, you’ll find these signs in relatively common areas. As long as you know where your plumbing runs, there’s no reason why checking around it should have to be hard. If it runs through a specific wall, for example, check that wall regularly for signs of water damage.

Be Quick With Pests

Pests can be an unfortunate part of owning a home, and they can turn up when you least expect it. Once they’re there, they’ll end up doing a lot more damage to your house than you’d think, and they could even impact you and your family’s health. Be on the lookout for the signs for pests as much as you can.

If you find any of these, hire a professional like Brentwood Pest Control to get rid of them for you. That way, you can rest easy knowing they’re actually gone. After that, make sure you’re taking a preventative approach. Keep your home clean and seal any holes around doors.

Double-Check Your Appliances

It’s natural to focus on the likes of your plumbing, electricals, and similar areas when you’re maintaining your home. But, your appliances can be one of the more overlooked parts of this, no matter how much you use them every day. They could need more maintenance than you might’ve thought.

That’s especially true with the likes of your refrigerator, for example, which often needs its fan to be cleaned or replaced every so often. Check your appliances every few months to make sure they’re working properly, and address any issues as fast as you can.

Clean Your Gutters & Downspouts

Your gutters and downspouts can be some of the more overlooked parts of your home, despite how important they can be. They help protect your house against water damage because of the weather. But, that’s only the case when they’re properly maintained. Cleaning your gutters and downspouts are part of this.

If you don’t, they could get clogged up, which causes rainwater to sit. This then leads to water damage in your roof and walls, which will then be expensive to deal with. Cleaning out the gutters and downspouts makes sure you don’t have to deal with that.

With the right home maintenance tips, there’s no reason why looking after your first house should have to be hard. It could be more straightforward than you would’ve thought.

In the gentle embrace of Shreveport’s pine-scented breeze, where tradition whispers through a blend of live oaks and pine trees. A new chapter in Southern living is being written at Whispering Path. Here, in the admired Southern Trace community, homebuilder Parrish Ramsey isn’t just constructing houses—she’s crafting legacies, one beautifully crafted home at a time.

“There’s something different about building a home in this neighborhood,” Parrish’s voice carrying the quiet confidence of someone who’s transformed from a nurse to one of Shreveport’s most discerning builders. “It’s not just about the structure—it’s about creating spaces where memories take root and flourish.”

A Tale of Transformation

Parrish’s journey from hospital corridors to construction sites might raise eyebrows at first glance, but watching her move through one of her homes— pointing out subtle design choices with the same precision she once used to check vital signs—you quickly understand the connection. After returning to Shreveport in 2003 with her newborn daughter Carmen, she found herself drawn to the art of home building, a passion that had quietly taken root while watching her parents craft their own homes over the years.

“I built my first house in 2005 in the Wisteria area of Southern Trace,” Parrish recalls, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “My parents, Joanne and Johnson Ramsey, had built a couple of their personal homes and helped get me started. Sometimes I think that nursing background gives me a different perspective—it’s all about attention to detail and caring for people’s needs.”

That nursing background, it turns out, was the perfect foundation for her future in construction. The parallels between patient care and home building are striking—both requiring meticulous attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and most importantly, a deep understanding of human needs. “In nursing, you learn to listen—really listen—to what people are telling you,” Parrish explains. “You develop an intuition for what they need, even when they might not be able to articulate it themselves. Building homes isn’t so different.”

This holistic approach is evident in every project she undertakes. Just as a nurse must consider how various treatments will interact with each other, Parrish evaluates how different elements of a home will work together— from the flow of spaces to the interplay of materials and light. “My medical background taught me to think systematically,” she says. “Everything in a home is connected, just like everything in the human body is connected. When one element is out of balance, it affects the whole system.”

Architectural Poetry

This blend of medical precision and human-centered care is nowhere more evident than in Parrish’s latest masterpiece at 10913 Whispering Path. Walking through the front door feels like being welcomed into a story that’s both timeless and thoroughly modern. When asked about her approach to this project, she pauses thoughtfully before responding, her eyes taking in the space around her. “Every home tells a story,” she says. “The question is how compelling do you want that story to be?” The answer, in this case, is very compelling indeed.

The home rises from its lot like a verse of architectural poetry—each line deliberately crafted, each detail thoughtfully considered. The façade, a masterful composition of refined brick and sophisticated detailing, manages to feel both timeless and thoroughly modern, a feat that’s harder to achieve than it looks.

Inside, the home unfolds with the grace of a wellchoreographed dance. The open-concept living spaces flow seamlessly into one another, while strategically placed windows capture views of the manicured landscape beyond. The kitchen, a symphony of quartzite countertops and custom cabinetry, strikes that elusive balance between showpiece and sanctuary. A professional-grade gas range anchors the space, while a generously sized island, topped with pristine quartzite, provides both a gathering spot and additional prep space.

“I believe in building kitchens that make you want to linger,” Parrish explains. “We chose these quartzite countertops not just for their beauty, but for their durability. The custom cabinetry isn’t just about storage—it’s about creating a space that works for how people really live. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or just enjoying your morning coffee, these spaces should feel like they’re embracing you.”

Details That Whisper

Throughout the home, Parrish’s attention to detail reveals itself in quiet ways. The master suite, more retreat than bedroom, offers a sanctuary from the world outside. The en-suite bathroom, with its freestanding soaking tub and oversized walk-in shower, features dual vanities topped with designer fixtures that catch the light like jewelry. The custom-designed closet space offers a level of organization that brings peace to the morning routine. “I think about how people will move through these spaces at different times of day,” she explains. “The morning rush to get ready for work, the evening wind-down routine—every moment should feel considered and cared for.”

In the secondary bedrooms, each with its own well-appointed bathroom, the same level of thoughtful design continues. “Every room should feel special,” Parrish notes. “Even spaces that guests might never see are finished to the same exacting standards.”

The wide-plank white oak flooring flows throughout the home, creating a seamless transition between spaces. Architectural lighting fixtures serve as both functional elements and works of art, while the carefully chosen neutral palette provides a sophisticated backdrop for any design style.

Another detail that sets Parrish’s homes apart isn’t just their aesthetic appeal— it’s her commitment to the local community. In an age of global supply chains, she has deliberately chosen to work with local vendors and subcontractors.

“I’m big on using local vendors and subcontractors,” she emphasizes. “A lot of them I’ve worked with since the beginning. When you build these relationships, there’s a level of trust and quality that you just can’t get otherwise. My right-hand man, Cippy, manages our projects on site day-to-day. He’s a jack of all trades, and honestly, I couldn’t do this without him.”

10913 Whispering Path sits within Southern Trace like a jewel in a carefully crafted setting. The community, with its championship golf course and pedestrian-friendly streets, represents a return to the principles of traditional neighborhood design. Here, front porches aren’t just architectural features—they’re invitations to connection.

The home’s outdoor spaces reflect this community-minded approach. A covered patio, complete with a built-in grill and fireplace, blurs the line between indoor and outdoor living. It’s easy to imagine lazy Sunday afternoons stretching into evening gatherings, the space alive with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses.

The neighborhood itself seems to exhale a collective sigh of contentment as evening approaches. Residents stroll past on their after-dinner walks, offering warm waves to neighbors relaxing on their front porches. This is exactly the kind of community connection Parrish envisioned when she chose this location.

As the sun sets over Southern Trace, casting long shadows across Whispering Path, it’s clear that what Parrish has created here is more than just another luxury home. It’s a testament to the power of transformation— both personal and architectural. From her early days as a nurse to her current role as one of Shreveport’s premier builders, Parrish has maintained the same dedication to care and attention to detail that marked her first career.

“When you’ve built and remodeled homes in areas from South Shreveport to Cross Lake over to North Bossier, you learn that every home has its own personality,” she reflects. “At the end of the day, building homes is about improving people’s lives. Whether it’s through thoughtful design, quality materials, or spaces that bring people together, every choice we make is in service of that goal.”

For those fortunate enough to call Whispering Path home, those choices have resulted in a residence that doesn’t just shelter, it elevates. In a world of mass production and quick turnarounds, Parrish has created something increasingly rare—a home with a soul, built by local hands, designed for modern living, and rooted in Southern tradition.

It’s more than a house—it’s a masterclass in Southern sophistication, where legacy meets luxury, and every detail tells a story of excellence, craftsmanship, and the transformative power of coming home.

French Sophistication Meets Southern Grace

Tucked gracefully within Bossier City’s exclusive and esteemed Oak Alley subdivision lies a home that seems plucked from the pages of a European fairytale. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets and well-maintained surroundings reflect a commitment to excellence and a shared appreciation for refined living.

Near the back of the neighborhood, on the streets of Belle Maison, is an exquisite architectural marvel, channeling the romantic allure of a French château while seamlessly accommodating the demands of modern living. With its stately facade, meticulously curated interiors, and resort-style amenities, this residence is more than a home—it’s an invitation to live artfully.

A Façade of Elegance

Approaching Belle Maison is like arriving at a private estate in the French countryside. The exterior is a harmonious medley of old-world sophistication and contemporary polish. Stone accents, a steeply pitched roofline, and intricate wrought iron details transport you to the Loire Valley, while the pristine landscaping—featuring manicured hedges, a fountain, and towering crepe myrtles—grounds the home firmly in Southern charm.

According to realtor’s Debbie Gibson and Opha Phillips, the homeowners wanted to create something timeless—a home that feels like it’s always belonged, but with all the conveniences of today. Timeless, indeed. This is the kind of house that turns heads, sparks conversations, and sets the gold standard for what luxury can look like in northwest Louisiana.

Step through the arched front door the grandeur of the home unfolds as you’re greeted by a symphony of textures and tones. The foyer’s soaring ceilings and dramatic staircase set the tone—this is a space where grandeur and intimacy coexist. Wide-plank oak floors stretch out underfoot, their soft patina a nod to the craftsmanship of yesteryear. Above, antique chandeliers cast a warm, inviting glow.
The heart of the home is the open concept living and dining area, an entertainer’s dream that balances scale and comfort. Anchored by a limestone fireplace—imported from France, naturally—the space invites gatherings both grand and intimate. The dining room, framed by arched doorways and accentuated with custom millwork, is where memories are destined to be made.
But it’s the kitchen that truly steals the show. Designed with both the chef and aesthete in mind, it boasts bespoke cabinetry, marble countertops, and a suite of professional-grade appliances. The oversized island—part workspace, part conversation hub—is a sculptural statement. And let’s not forget the butler’s pantry, a hidden gem that adds functionality without sacrificing style.

Nestled in the lush heart of one of Shreveport’s most exclusive neighborhoods, this home isn’t just a testament to elegant design—it’s a statement to resilience and reinvention.

In Shreveport’s respected Southern Trace neighborhood stands a testament to the power of manifestation—a Mediterranean villa that its owner first spotted while pitching a business deal that would end in rejection. Today, that same house has been transformed into an elegant estate that bridges Old-World craftsmanship with modern luxury, all thanks to a restaurateur who refused to take “no” for an answer.

“I was just a hopeful entrepreneur back then, driving through the gates of Southern Trace as a ‘caterer,’” recalls homeowner Don O’Byrne. “I saw this beautiful pink stucco home with a tile roof and said to myself, ‘One day I’ll live there.”

At the time, O’Byrne was living in a modest 1,100-square-foot home in Haughton, facing rejection after rejection from banks and investors who couldn’t see the potential in what would eventually become Don Juanz Baja Beach Tacos— including the very people he catered for that fateful night- Don eventually launched his restaurant in 2006. Fast forward to 2011, and O’Byrne found himself holding the keys to that very same Southern Trace villa—though “holding together” might be a more apt description of the property’s condition.

“I could literally see daylight through parts of the ceiling,” he recalls, shaking his head. Where others saw a money pit, O’Byrne—by then a successful restaurateur—saw his next great project. Taking on the role of general contractor, he and his wife Amy embarked on a renovation journey that would transform a troubled property into a showpiece of Old-World craftsmanship and modern luxury.

The Art of the Long Game

The home’s renaissance began where many of its problems originated—the roof. “We stripped it down to the bones,” O’Byrne explains, detailing a comprehensive rebuild that included new trusses, purlins, automatic roof vents, Ice & Watershield Underlayment, and wider flashings. Ever the perfectionist, he even sourced a mix of new and reclaimed roof tiles to achieve an authentically aged Mediterranean look. “The idea wasn’t just to fix it—it was to make it look like it had been here forever, doing exactly what it was supposed to do.”

That attention to detail extends throughout the property. Step into the foyer, and you’re transported to an Italian palazzo with Venetian plaster walls, granite-inlaid Italian porcelain tiles, and a stunning gold-leaf ceiling. “I applied each 4-inch square by hand,” O’Byrne notes casually, as if spending countless hours applying sheets of gold leaf was just another Tuesday. Oil paintings from his time living in Italy in the 1960s add authentic gravitas to the space.

The great room exemplifies the O’Byrne’s talent for balancing preservation with innovation. Gone are the original faux French doors, replaced with expansive picture windows that frame a resort-worthy backyard scene—a sparkling pool, elegant fountain, and dramatically uplighted palm trees. A white marble fireplace anchors one end of the room, while a sumptuous sectional invites family gatherings at the other. “Amy’s the decorator, and I’m the builder or the person who gets it built,” O’Byrne says, crediting his wife with the home’s cohesive aesthetic. “Her job seems more fun than mine,” he adds with characteristic humor. Yet watching him discuss the intricacies of hand-applying Venetian plaster to 20-foot walls, it’s clear he finds joy in the craftsmanship. The couple has masterfully integrated modern conveniences without compromising the home’s Old-World charm. A Control4 system, installed in 2020, manages everything from lighting to security to audio throughout the property. The kitchen showcases Sub- Zero and professional-grade appliances, though the 2011 granite countertops they initially installed have become a source of gentle domestic debate. “My hardest job now is convincing Amy that perfectly good granite doesn’t need replacing with marble. It never grows old!” O’Byrne chuckles.

The Great Outdoors

The landscaping of the nearly one-acre property is where the O’Byrne’s vision truly shines. In 2015, Don tapped Chris Elberson at Somdal Associates to assist with the design of the outdoor kitchen and garage. The garage, far from a mere storage space, features epoxycoated floors and custom wood doors from California Ranch House Doors, creating a climate-controlled space that’s as suited for entertaining as it is for vehicles. It was meticulously designed to complement the main house, down to customstained roof tiles and handapplied ¾-inch thick stucco. “The idea was to make the new addition appear built in 1997 with the home”. The pool area—the O’Byrne’s most enjoyed feature—has been transformed into a resort-worthy retreat, complete with a state-of-the-art heater/chiller that extends the swimming season to eight months. “This year, we were swimming with our dogs one week before Thanksgiving,” Don notes proudly, “and enjoyed 86-degree water on July 4th.” The chiller unit is one of his favorite things about the home.

The renovation process revealed some surprising insights into the home’s original 1997 construction. “Inside the chimney duct on the bottom floor, we found a whole power saw that had been sealed inside during the build-out,” O’Byrne reveals. “If there was a shortcut to be taken when this home was built, it was taken. But we’ve corrected everything.”

Today, the property stands as a testament to perseverance and attention to detail. The thick concrete stucco walls keep the interior comfortable year-round, while the Floridian-inspired landscaping, complete with palm trees, creates a resort-like atmosphere. Don still dreams of adding 20-foot Italian Cypress trees to complete his Mediterranean vision.

This Mediterranean sanctuary, surrounded by palm trees and the sound of flowing fountains, the O’Byrne’s have created more than just a home—they’ve crafted a testament to the power of vision and perseverance. From the roof over their heads to the Venetian plastered walls that surround them to the meticulously maintained grounds their two Weimaraner’s roam on, every detail reflects a labor of love and the joy of proving the doubters wrong.

When it comes to the housing market in Bossier City, many homes follow traditional Southern designs, often featuring Ranch or Craftsman styles. But hidden among the oak trees and azalea bushes of the exclusive Stonebridge community lies a thoroughly modern marvel that is redefining Southern living.
“This home is unlike anything else you’ll find in this part of the state,” says Debbie Hynes, the Century 21 agent listing the property. “It’s a true masterpiece of contemporary design that seamlessly blends cutting-edge style with all the comforts of a luxurious family home.”
Built in 2023 for that year’s Parade of Homes showcase, this home is the creation of Michael Jeane of MJ Construction—a respected local builder who has been wowing crowds with his innovative designs for over a decade. Along with Michael, designers Amanda Thaxton and George Plaxco were brought in to complete this incredibly beautiful space.
“Amanda and George really poured their hearts into this home,” Hynes explains. “They were determined to create something that would turn heads and challenge people’s preconceptions about what a ‘Southern home’ should look like.”
And challenge those preconceptions, it does. From the dramatically angled roofline to the seamless walls of glass that blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, every inch of this 2,887-square-foot stunner screams modern sophistication—and that’s before you even step inside.

The exterior alone is enough to make you do a doubletake. It’s so different from the traditional brick-andwhite- column aesthetic that dominates this part of Louisiana. What makes it unique is its bold, almost futuristic feel.
And while the home’s curb appeal is striking, it’s the breathtaking interior that truly leaves a lasting impression. From the soaring 21-foot ceilings in the great room to the sleek, high-end appliances in the gourmet kitchen, every square foot has been meticulously designed to maximize both form and function.
Take, for instance, the jaw-dropping custom iron staircase that curves up to the second-floor loft. Not only is it a stunning sculptural centerpiece, but Hynes explains that the open design was specifically chosen to maintain the airy, light-filled ambiance throughout the home. “That railing is a work of art,” she marvels. “The team at Iron Clad Fabrication did an incredible job creating something that’s both visually striking and functionally sound. It’s the kind of detail you just don’t see in your average house.”
The same can be said for the one-of-a-kind fireplace in the great room, which features a unique textured finish created through a meticulous layering process by The Finishing Touch design team. “Carrie Rodie and Jamie Davis really worked their magic with that fireplace,” Hynes says. “The end result is this gorgeous, almost 3D-like effect that adds so much depth and character to the space.”

Clad in gleaming white cabinetry, accented with gold hardware, and anchored by a massive quartz island, it’s the culinary oasis that would make even the most seasoned chef swoon.
“The current owner took this kitchen to the next level with his impeccable design choices,” Hynes explains. “From the Calacatta gold backsplash to the premium GE Profile appliances, every detail has been meticulously curated to create a space that’s both beautiful and incredibly functional.”
But while the kitchen may be the heart of the home, it’s the sprawling primary suite that seals the deal. Boasting wood-tile floors, a freestanding soaker tub, and a gigantic walk-in shower with gold fixtures, it’s a true oasis of luxury and relaxation.
“This primary bathroom is just stunning,” Hynes raves. “The team spared no expense in creating a space that feels like your own personal spa. And the fact that it connects directly to the covered patio and outdoor area makes it feel like your own private resort.”

Thankfully, the quality build will reduce the risk of unexpected breakdown. Yet, having a pro plumber in your contact book will spare you many hassles going forward.

Speaking of the outdoor living spaces, Hynes highlights the thoughtful design choices that elevate this home’s impressive curb appeal. Every element, from the custom concrete patio to the woodplank ceiling on the covered porch, has been carefully selected to create a cohesive, high-end aesthetic.

Nestled in the heart of Shreveport’s Provenance neighborhood is a home that beautifully blends traditional charm with modern comfort. Step inside and see how it captures the essence of warm family living while paying homage to the rich architectural heritage of Louisiana.

Shreveport, LA. Provenance is more than just a neighborhood—it’s a lifestyle steeped in Southern tradition. With tree-lined streets, classic architecture, and community parks, the neighborhood is reminiscent of a bygone era where neighborly interactions encourage a strong sense of belonging. Here you will find the home of Nick and Carolyn Courville—a residence that proudly stands within this picturesque setting, seamlessly blending with the landscape while radiating a warmth that invites all to come inside.

As you approach the Courville residence, the influence of renowned Louisiana architect A. Hays Town is unmistakable. The home’s exterior, with its generous use of brick, deep overhanging eaves, and shuttered windows, pays homage to Town’s signature style. This architectural language—deeply rooted in the vernacular of the region—creates an immediate sense of place and history.

The façade—a masterful composition of warm brick and crisp trim—exudes a timeless charm that beckons visitors to step closer. A broad, welcoming porch stretches across the front of the home, its graceful columns supporting a pitched roof that provides the perfect shelter for lazy Sunday afternoons spent drinking lemonade and watching the world go by.

Bennett Sabatier, the architect behind this stunning home, perfectly captured the spirit of Town’s work while adapting it to the modern needs of the Courville family. His goal was to create a home that reflects a harmonious balance between Southern hospitality and architectural finesse—offering a glimpse into the essence of life in northwest Louisiana. Built in 2015 by Justin Sevier of Vintage Construction Group, the home originally boasted 2,000 square feet of elegantly designed living space. But it was not until the addition of a second story in 2022 that the home blossomed into its current impressive stature— measuring just over 3,000 square feet and featuring 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The thoughtful expansion allowed Nick and Carolyn to adapt their living space to accommodate their family’s needs, all while maintaining the home’s authentic charm.

As you step across the threshold into the home, one is immediately struck by the meticulous attention to detail that defines every corner in an atmosphere of refined elegance. The family room, with its tall ceiling, wainscoting, and hardwood floors, sets the tone for the entire home. “We wanted to create a home that honored the past while embracing the future,” explains homeowner Nick Courville. “Every design choice was made with this balance in mind.”

“We also wanted a home that would accommodate our love for hosting friends and family but also provide cozy nooks for quiet moments,” Carolyn Courville, Nick’s wife, continues. “This space does both beautifully.” This philosophy is evident throughout the home, where traditional elements like crown molding and wainscoting are juxtaposed against contemporary furnishings. The result is a space that feels at once familiar and fresh, comfortable yet undeniably charming. The design aesthetic showcases A. Hays Town’s influence, characterized by expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, classic brickwork, and a strikingly unique arched brick wall in the master bedroom. This captivating feature not only serves as a stunning architectural element but also adds an intimate touch to the master suite, creating a cozy retreat that reflects the serenity of the surrounding landscape. Most of the interior spaces are bathed in natural light, courtesy of thoughtfully placed transom windows that grace the home. These elegant architectural details not only enhance the home’s beauty but also evoke a sense of airiness and openness— inviting the outdoors inside. The interplay of light and shadow throughout the day highlights the exquisite craftsmanship present in every room, from the spacious living area to the beautifully appointed bedrooms.

The home not only functions as a dwelling but also as a canvas for family memories. Perhaps one of the home’s most captivating features is the flooring located in the bedroom of Nick and Carolyn’s two daughters— Anna and Mary Alice. “These boards,” Carolyn explains with a touch of nostalgia, “come from my father’s childhood home in Natchitoches. That house was built in 1946, just after World War II, and held so many memories for my dad’s family. Having a piece of it here is like carrying our family history with us.” The rich patina of the wood, bearing the marks of generations past, adds depth and character to the home that no new material could match. It’s a brilliant example of how thoughtful design can incorporate elements of personal history, creating a space that is truly unique to its inhabitants.

The kitchen flows effortlessly into the family area, offering cherished moments of connection.
An enclosed sun porch offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The home’s landscape design mirrors the home’s traditional aesthetic, incorporating native plants and lush greenery that flourishes in the Louisiana climate.

“We designed the sunroom and upstairs playroom with our girls in mind,” Carolyn shares. “We wanted to give them places to explore and use their imaginations— places with plenty of sunlight and color. We want some of their fondest memories to be of their childhood home.”

Where trends come and go, the Courville home remains steadfast in its appeal. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern functionality ensures that it will stand the test of time. With every room telling a story, the home is a testament to the family’s commitment to preserving their legacy while creating a space for future generations to cherish. The thoughtful design choices made by both Nick and Carolyn shine through in every corner of the home. Each element— from the iconic arched brick wall to the elegant transom windows to the reclaimed floors—reflects a dedication to quality and artistry that is becoming increasingly rare in contemporary architecture.

“This home is not just a structure,” Carolyn adds. “It’s a place where our family grows, learns, and loves.” In an era where the notion of home is continually evolving, the Courville residence embodies the enduring spirit of Louisiana’s architectural heritage.

Elm Gove, LA. Lake Bistineau in northwest Louisiana is a gem for anyone who likes to spend time outdoors. Wide-trunked cypress trees lure photographers, boaters, and nature lovers of all types. A bonus is that it is located a short half-hour drive from Shreveport and Bossier City. If you want to experience north Louisiana’s pristine wetlands at their wildest—this is the place to be. And, if you’re looking to buy a lakefront, state-of-the-art property that is full of charm and sophistication, look no further.

Nestled on a private peninsula in a finger of Lake Bistineau known as “Spring Branch” is an 11-acre estate known as Sanctuary. Behind its private gate you’ll find a pristine contemporary main house, a guest house, panoramic views, and over 1,200 feet of seawall. Listed for $5.25 million by REALTORS® Lynn Roos and Adrienne Frierson of Coldwell Banker Apex, this striking residence features a design unlike anything in the area. If it reads like a modern-day take of Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden,” architect Mike McSwain doesn’t mind. If it reads like a love poem to the surrounding forest and lake, even better.

“It was a purposeful intention to weave the building into the landscape,” says McSwain, a Shreveport architect whose firm specializes in contemporary design. In 2004, he was hired to create a utopian vision for the homeowner—one that unplugs from city life.

The main goal was for the future home to be nestled into the existing hillside and engage with nature. General contracting services were provided by Shreveport’s premier design-build construction company Commercial Construction & Development (also known as CC&D).

Embracing a simplistic design, the main structure took four years to design and complete. As you snake down the driveway, the house seems hidden, as if it had just crawled out of the earth—and there are minimal differences in material deployment inside and out of the home. There is a spirit of escape, as well as of personal discovery—seeing something that rises out of somewhere uniquely special—was a big part of the design. The visioning, the framing of spaces and the detailing was meticulously planned. As a designer, McSwain recalled how he was constantly challenged by the homeowner. “He was a collaborative partner from beginning to end. It was a fun process, and final results speak for themselves.”

Though modern, the home’s vernacular focused on cultivating a vibrant, family-centric lifestyle melding indoor and outdoor gatherings. “Taking advantage of the lake views was key, as was creating a home that would seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living,” says McSwain. To create these seamless spaces between indoor and outdoor, McSwain integrated the structure using the terrain to his advantage. By positioning decks and patios—over 8,000 square feet in total—he was able to take advantage of the lake to beautifully capture the surrounding views.

The home was also carefully positioned on the site to maximize natural light and follow the path of the sun— the roof is pitched perfectly, and the structure is precisely aligned, to accommodate large windows that effectively combat heat gain from the hot Louisiana summers. The interiors are clean-lined and spare yet warm, making use of materials for the custom cabinetry, unique flooring, and exposed ceiling beams throughout. The living areas are placed at the heart of the home, surrounding it with glass on the sides, which brings the outside in, revealing more of the surrounding landscape.

These floor-to-ceiling steel-frame glass walls on the main level bring 180-degree views directly into the main living areas with as little obstruction as possible. All primary living spaces—such as the family room, dining area, and kitchen— were placed strategically next to exterior living spaces, where Nana sliding glass doors open for airflow (if desired). A tall ceiling helps keep the space cool. While the architect admitted that the focus was the outdoors, he also wanted the interiors to be easy and comfortable.

The modern, exaggerated roofline combines form and function. And because of the contemporary design, the architect wasn’t constrained by traditional details—allowing the structure to have a clear and strong relationship with the environment. By night, the home glows from the inside thanks to the abundance of windows. While public living spaces are exposed to nature with its expansive glass windows and doors, as a counterpoint, private spaces—like bedrooms SBMAG.NET | JULY 2024 59 and bathrooms—are cloistered for privacy. “Those spaces feel more cocoon-like and intimate,” says McSwain, making their attention to design and detail unparalleled. The primary suite offers two bathrooms separated by an oversized walk-in closet. On the lower level find two additional suites, a private kitchen, theater room, gym, craft room, and additional living spaces.

In all the bedroom suites, the same floor-to-ceiling window design frames the view of the outdoors. Hurd windows offer an elevated living experience—featuring a unique design component that allows fresh air to be brought inside. Two types of environments— exposed and intimate—are linked through a series of intentional passages. “Movement through the building was very important—how you arrive and what you see as you circulate between the spaces,” says McSwain. For instance, moving up the stairs, you feel as if you are outside, with similar materials in the stairwells are carried to the porches and patios. “When you move through the building, there is a choreography where you understand the site more clearly because of the views you see through the different windows,” says McSwain. “And even though this is a very large house, there is a ‘tease’ of what lies around the corner. You can never see everything at once—which, as a designer, I find absolutely fascinating.”If connecting with all spaces was important, that meant that finding the right interior designer was paramount. That’s why the homeowner brought in interior designer Kirk Thomas. For anyone who steps foot in the home, they would immediately sense that a lot of inspiration came from Kirk Thomas— referring to the sleek minimalism prevalent throughout the interior rooms. Thomas fleshed out the luminous interior spaces with an eclectic blend of art and decor. For example, some walls are adorned with custom Venetian plaster wallpaper—offering a symphony of design and craftsmanship that invites you to experience luxury at its finest. Each stroke of that plaster tells a story of meticulous craftsmanship, creating a canvas that transforms the living spaces into a work of art. A one-of-akind custom limestone “hanging” fireplace, expertly crafted from Portugal, was thoughtfully designed to allow stunning view of the lake as you enter the front door.

Sometimes architecture intuitively connects people to a place while remaining minimal and unselfish enough to allow the outdoor environment to do most of the talking. Such is the case with this contemporary lake house on Shreveport’s Cross Lake. This home remains rooted in its place, responding to the natural environment and blending flawlessly into the landscape, all with multigenerational living features.

For many people, a multigenerational home is just the home they already live in. At some point or another, many families across three (or even more) generations choose to live together for any number of reasons. And, in many parts of the world, it’s incredibly common to do so.

This often takes place in a separate dwelling on the same house plot, sometimes called secondary suites, in-law apartments, casitas, or affectionately nicknamed granny annexes. Yet, a single house can function perfectly with multiple generations living under one roof. There are many benefits to having multiple generations in one household—shared costs, closer family bonds, and easier aging-in-place (to name a few). The challenge for many families is finding the perfect home to meet the unique needs and preferences of each member.

This newly built contemporary lake house on Shreveport’s Cross Lake does just that.

Built with a simple, unadorned architecture that recalls Prairie style, the home’s appearance is a bit of an anomaly among the more rustic ‘lake houses’ seen throughout Cross Lake. The homeowner—who wished to remain anonymous—was both the designer and builder and kept the exterior architecture, as well as the surrounding lake and woods, in mind when the layout was chosen.

“The inspiration for this house was shaped by the owner’s passion for modern design, as well as aspirations for a lake home where generations can stay, engage, and make memories,” says realtor Chris Holloway, the home’s listing agent with Ethos Home Group. “The idea was simple. Create a contemporary, multi-generational house connecting nature and family.”

The result is a clean, casual, and comfortable 6-bedroom, 3-1/2-bathroom home, encompassing 5,220 square feet, that is scaled and oriented to be nearly hidden amongst the grass and trees. It seamlessly blends in with the natural landscape, offering total privacy. Unpretentious in materiality, the structure has a rawness and honesty to it—the exterior walls are clad with Brazilian Redwood and stucco, with refinement being created through well-crafted detailing. “The approach on materials was to be really practical with them,” says Holloway. “The intent for the ornament of the house should come from the views.”

Inside, generous windows, huge glass facades, and sliding doors erase the lines of the walls and allow natural light and stunning views to pour in. The interiors remain contemporary, refined, and welcoming without being untouchable. While the house has a clean and somewhat formal look, its design can take a beating—literally! “The owner chose durable materials that can stand up to the constant parade of muddy boots, dogs, kids, and party guests that could occupy any of its spaces. through here,” said Holloway. “For example, the floors are luxury vinyl.

Communal spaces are found on the ground floor—including the kitchen, keeping room, and living room—all open to one another. The primary bedroom is on the main floor, with access to the kitchen. The bottom floor houses a full kitchen as well, along with four bedrooms and two full baths, an office, and a flex room. “The bottom-floor office, which also can serve as a bedroom, has huge views—with the doors offering easy access down to the lake.”

There is even residual space on the bottom floor (underneath the main floor) that remains unfinished. It could easily be turned into a finished-out basement or custom home theatre—with ample room for additional storage and access to the electrical and ductwork.

Large expanses of glass provide tons of natural light and offer immersive views of the lake and wooded landscape. “That is what is fun about this house,” Holloway says. “This property is one of only a handful on Cross Lake that offer views of the water from both the front and back of the house. You get these two dramatic experiences in this one space, and all you must do is turn around. You can look right straight ahead, and you have this view of the lake.

Minden, LA. Blogger Sara McDaniel is the quintessential girl next door—a brilliant combination of soft and strong with a side of Southern sass and spunk! Born and raised in Springhill, she would often visit Minden and remembered the quaint north Louisiana town filled with scores of historic homes, all filled with loads of charm and hospitality. Sara left Webster Parish after high school, vowing never to return.

Then, in December of 2014, while visiting with family for the holidays, she drove past a completely broken down, dilapidated 1920s cottage on the edge of downtown—overtaken by red tip photinias, oak trees, azaleas, daffodils, and poison ivy—abandoned for nearly a decade.

Barely visible behind an overgrown tangle of trees, bushes, and vines—the worn and weathered porch gave way to a maze of tiny rooms piled floor-to-ceiling with years of discarded belongings, long-forgotten papers, and covered furniture. But even the caved ceilings, rotting wood, and animals in the attic didn’t deter Sara—as she envisioned only the beauty the 1926 cottage once was and could become again.

“I was unequivocally smitten,” Sara wrote on her website Simply Southern Cottage, which documented her restoration of the home. “I felt the draw and knew it was supposed to be my home. But it was in bad shape. It was rotten on the outside, the roof was bad, and the ceiling was caving in.”

Unfortunately, it was not for sale.

For the next two years she tried convincing the owners, whose family had owned the property for over 90 years, to sell it. The process proved extremely challenging, even for Sara, a woman of great faith. But her “pleasant persistence” as she describes it, paid off, and she finally purchased the cottage in September 2016.

Upon buying the property, Sara began a full, “down to the studs” restoration. She put on a tin roof, and installed new plumbing, electrical, insulation and HVAC. Three layers of wallpaper, cheesecloth and paneling were torn out, revealing 90+ year-old shiplap. All the existing light fixtures were restored and reused.

“It was very important to me to reclaim and repurpose as much of the original house as I could while adding modern convenience,” Sara says. She removed walls on the first floor to open it up and make the kitchen larger and turned the open attic into a functional living space for guests. “I repurposed as many of the original details and architecture as possible,” she admits. “Every interior door of the cottage is original. The fireplace mantel was relocated to a more functional location. I added a big, ole southern back porch.”

As the layers of filth, dirt and clutter were peeled away, unique architectural details were discovered, as well an interesting piece of history. As the original hardwood floors were being removed to be refinished, Sara found a document titled “The Autobiography of Belle Howard Mayfield” hidden in the floorboards. The autobiography details happy and painful memories of Mayfield’s childhood, her marriage, and the birth of her children. The details of which Sara published to her website.

Sara said she never felt overwhelmed as she took on the project, and she encourages anyone in the market for a new home to consider taking on similar undertakings. “Do it. Don’t hesitate,” she says, “There are so many houses that are just sitting vacant. Don’t be afraid. It is so rewarding to bring something back to life and houses aren’t built like this anymore.”

Step inside to see this beautiful cottage with lots of charm, both inside and out. Every room offers a bit of a surprise—delivering interesting decor that engages everyone who sets foot in the space. And while Sara brought in a little bit of a funky flair, there’s also a lot of nostalgia worth pointing out.

From the front porch to the direct, unobstructed passageways between living areas, the almost 2,400-square-foot, 4-bedroom, 2-and-a-half-bath home is designed to make moving around as smooth as possible. Sara thought through every detail, down to the back porch bed-swing—one of her favorite places to relax. “It’s attractive and quaint,” she explains. “I wanted it to have a cozy warmth, to feel like it hugs you when you are there.”

Take Design Cues from the Landscape

If there was ever a porch that begged for views, it’s this one. “When people are here, I want them to soak in the beauty all around them,” Sara says. “The setting is amazing, and the landscape plays off that. I get asked a lot, “Why the yellow door?” Simply put, I wanted a bright, cheery, colorful, and inviting exterior. This yellow door exudes joy and positivity and anyone who sees it, just has to smile.”

The landscape, too, is welcoming with ‘Dwarf Burford’ hollies and trailing vinca along the front porch, complimented by crape myrtles, dwarf gardenias, and liriope on the ends. A pale blue on the beaded-board porch ceiling stems from Southern folklore that the hue repels everything from ghosts to insects. Sara brings dinner guests out on the porch here to relax with dessert and coffee.

Fine-Tune the Details

“Lighting gives the home a little bit of edge,” Sara says. “I just took a few more risks—doing things differently than one might have and it really set the tone for the rest of the house.” Sara considers the windmill-inspired ceiling fan a worthwhile splurge as the statement piece for the master bedroom, a tranquil retreat thanks to her use of minimal color and warm wood tones against a white backdrop.

Don’t Be Afraid to Break with Trends

“I wanted to do something other than a typical island,” says Sara, who took inspiration from the cottage’s light hardwood floors when she settled on the revamped kitchen’s slightly more contemporary island. Shreveport Salvage built and stained the top a honey-blond hue that complements the floors. Light walls, casement windows, and a flat ceiling strike just the right balance and keep the space bright.

A spot to grow plants in the winter and enjoy the backyard in the summer, the new greenhouse is composed of the cottage’s original windows and is home to a wicker settee Sara found on the roadside. The master bath is a testament to the union of beauty and practicality: waterproof laminate planks provide the look of wood; the ladder towel rack was another roadside find; and the vintage-look chandelier is an Amazon purchase.

Embrace That Old-Home Soul

A deft mix of accessories and vintage furniture placed throughout lends the home an immediate sense of both history and personality. A pair of folding wood seats along one wall of the library was salvaged from a Michigan theater. Sara cleverly surrounded an oversize quote artwork with open books. “I used a lot of textural pieces to give the layered, lived-in feel—as well as to give the room some dimension.”

Lean Into the Lifestyle

The kitchen remodel entailed a new farmhouse sink with an old look, white cabinets topped with quartz countertops, and a trio of windows to usher in daylight and cooling breezes. In the upper-level bath, an antique vanity Sara found in a junk shop proved to be a perfect fit under the eaves and atop blue-and-white cement floor tiles that bring a punch of pretty pattern and color to the space.

Add a Touch of Whimsy

Throughout the house, Sara’s passion for combining family pieces with thrift store finds creates an air of welcoming, collected charm. Sara’s mother found the bench, knowing it would fit perfectly beneath this window beside the kitchen, and a friend made the pillows. Faux herbs wrapped in brown paper tied with twine bring simplicity and everlasting color to the kitchen windowsill.

“I love shopping garage sales the most because of the bargains,” she says. “But I’m very intentional. It’s not a huge investment and gives so much character. I feel like these spaces should be memorable. I want to keep my life—and surroundings—simple.”

One of Benjamin Franklin’s famous sayings was, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Yes, home maintenance means adding more chores to your list. But deferring maintenance is likely to be time consuming and costly. Performing home maintenance tasks can prevent larger problems or deterioration, extend the life and value of the property, and create a safe and comfortable place to live.

To make home maintenance less painful, include home maintenance costs in your monthly budget or set aside funds in your emergency savings account for unexpected repairs.

You can identify potential issues around the home when you engage in ongoing inspections of your property. Here are some ideas for keeping up with home maintenance:

Check the inside of your home for cracks, stains, or damage on your walls, ceilings, or floors. Follow recommended maintenance schedules for appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, ovens, and stoves. Clean and check fireplaces and chimneys. Install proper insulation and weatherstripping for energy efficiency.

Check the exterior of your home for cracks, leaks, or damage to the roof, brick, siding, gutters, downspouts, windows, doors, driveways, walkways, fences, foundation, and the overall structure.

Pest control is important to the maintenance of a home, keeping unwanted pests or creatures away from the home to prevent health problems to people or damage to the home and property. It’s a good idea to inspect areas inside and outside the home, install or repair screens and seal cracks and other potential places of entry. You can use insecticides, traps, baits, or call in professional pest control services.

Maintaining the trees in your yard is good for the health of the tree and helps prevent any safety issues. Pruning, mulching, fertilizing, and watering are all important parts of caring for trees, depending on type, age, and size of tree. Inspections help identify pest problems or disease. Consult a certified arborist to inspect and report on the health of your trees. A certified arborist focuses primarily on the long-term health and maintenance of trees, but also removes trees. An arborist can help you determine if a tree can be saved. A tree removal specialist primarily focuses on the safe and efficient removal of trees.

Maintain the lawn area by trimming trees and shrubs, cutting grass, cleaning out gutters, addressing any drainage issues, and inspecting the irrigation system.

Stay on top of safety measures. Some examples are installing, checking, repairing, or replacing smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, carbon monoxide detectors, alarm systems, door and window locks, first aid kits, indoor and outdoor lighting, stairs, thresholds, and railings.

Regular cleaning and organizing the home can help with air quality by removing dust and allergens and keep furnishings and floorings in top condition.

Maintaining the plumbing in your home is essential for preventing issues, avoiding expensive repairs, and keeping the system in good operating condition. Consider hiring a professional plumber for periodic plumbing inspections. This typically includes ensuring proper water pressure, checking for leaks in pipes, fixtures, or appliances, checking water heaters, cleaning drains, and inspecting backflow prevention devices and shut-off valves, cleanouts, and access panels for accessing plumbing components.

Don’t mess with electricity! Call in a professional electrician to inspect your home’s electrical systems to keep your home safe or fix any issues. They can check for faulty wiring or loose connections, test outlets, replace worn out parts, and ensure proper grounding.

Keeping your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system properly maintained helps it run efficiently and save energy. Having it serviced once a year by a professional is recommended. Tasks may include cleaning or changing out filters, cleaning vents and ducts, checking thermostats, inspecting, and cleaning outdoor units and servicing the furnace.

Keep Up With Home Maintenance

Create a checklist so all areas and systems are reviewed.
Schedule your review of items on the checklist. Some areas may need to be reviewed more often than others.
Identify and address issues promptly.
Hire a professional when needed for repairs or replacements.
Keep receipts, records, and warranties for any work done.

Happy Homeownership!
