A new chapter in Southern living is being written at Whispering Path. Here, in the admired Southern Trace community, homebuilder Parrish Ramsey isn’t just constructing houses—she’s crafting legacies, one beautifully crafted home at a time.

“There’s something different about building a home in this neighborhood,” Parrish’s voice carrying the quiet confidence of someone who’s transformed from a nurse to one of Shreveport’s most discerning builders. “It’s not just about the structure—it’s about creating spaces where memories take root and flourish.”

A Tale of Transformation

Parrish’s journey from hospital corridors to construction sites might raise eyebrows at first glance, but watching her move through one of her homes— pointing out subtle design choices with the same precision she once used to check vital signs—you quickly understand the connection. After returning to Shreveport in 2003 with her newborn daughter Carmen, she found herself drawn to the art of home building, a passion that had quietly taken root while watching her parents craft their own homes over the years.

“I built my first house in 2005 in the Wisteria area of Southern Trace,” Parrish recalls, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “My parents, Joanne and Johnson Ramsey, had built a couple of their personal homes and helped get me started. Sometimes I think that nursing background gives me a different perspective—it’s all about attention to detail and caring for people’s needs.”

That nursing background, it turns out, was the perfect foundation for her future in construction. The parallels between patient care and home building are striking—both requiring meticulous attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and most importantly, a deep understanding of human needs. “In nursing, you learn to listen—really listen—to what people are telling you,” Parrish explains. “You develop an intuition for what they need, even when they might not be able to articulate it themselves. Building homes isn’t so different.”

This holistic approach is evident in every project she undertakes. Just as a nurse must consider how various treatments will interact with each other, Parrish evaluates how different elements of a home will work together— from the flow of spaces to the interplay of materials and light. “My medical background taught me to think systematically,” she says. “Everything in a home is connected, just like everything in the human body is connected. When one element is out of balance, it affects the whole system.”

Architectural Poetry

This blend of medical precision and human-centered care is nowhere more evident than in Parrish’s latest masterpiece at 10913 Whispering Path. Walking through the front door feels like being welcomed into a story that’s both timeless and thoroughly modern. When asked about her approach to this project, she pauses thoughtfully before responding, her eyes taking in the space around her. “Every home tells a story,” she says. “The question is how compelling do you want that story to be?” The answer, in this case, is very compelling indeed.

The home rises from its lot like a verse of architectural poetry—each line deliberately crafted, each detail thoughtfully considered. The façade, a masterful composition of refined brick and sophisticated detailing, manages to feel both timeless and thoroughly modern, a feat that’s harder to achieve than it looks.

Inside, the home unfolds with the grace of a wellchoreographed dance. The open-concept living spaces flow seamlessly into one another, while strategically placed windows capture views of the manicured landscape beyond. The kitchen, a symphony of quartzite countertops and custom cabinetry, strikes that elusive balance between showpiece and sanctuary. A professional-grade gas range anchors the space, while a generously sized island, topped with pristine quartzite, provides both a gathering spot and additional prep space.

“I believe in building kitchens that make you want to linger,” Parrish explains. “We chose these quartzite countertops not just for their beauty, but for their durability. The custom cabinetry isn’t just about storage—it’s about creating a space that works for how people really live. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or just enjoying your morning coffee, these spaces should feel like they’re embracing you.”

Details That Whisper

Throughout the home, Parrish’s attention to detail reveals itself in quiet ways. The master suite, more retreat than bedroom, offers a sanctuary from the world outside. The en-suite bathroom, with its freestanding soaking tub and oversized walk-in shower, features dual vanities topped with designer fixtures that catch the light like jewelry. The custom-designed closet space offers a level of organization that brings peace to the morning routine. “I think about how people will move through these spaces at different times of day,” she explains. “The morning rush to get ready for work, the evening wind-down routine—every moment should feel considered and cared for.”

In the secondary bedrooms, each with its own well-appointed bathroom, the same level of thoughtful design continues. “Every room should feel special,” Parrish notes. “Even spaces that guests might never see are finished to the same exacting standards.”

The wide-plank white oak flooring flows throughout the home, creating a seamless transition between spaces. Architectural lighting fixtures serve as both functional elements and works of art, while the carefully chosen neutral palette provides a sophisticated backdrop for any design style.

Another detail that sets Parrish’s homes apart isn’t just their aesthetic appeal— it’s her commitment to the local community. In an age of global supply chains, she has deliberately chosen to work with local vendors and subcontractors.

“I’m big on using local vendors and subcontractors,” she emphasizes. “A lot of them I’ve worked with since the beginning. When you build these relationships, there’s a level of trust and quality that you just can’t get otherwise. My right-hand man, Cippy, manages our projects on site day-to-day. He’s a jack of all trades, and honestly, I couldn’t do this without him.”

A Community Within a Community

10913 Whispering Path sits within Southern Trace like a jewel in a carefully crafted setting. The community, with its championship golf course and pedestrian-friendly streets, represents a return to the principles of traditional neighborhood design. Here, front porches aren’t just architectural features—they’re invitations to connection.

The home’s outdoor spaces reflect this community-minded approach. A covered patio, complete with a built-in grill and fireplace, blurs the line between indoor and outdoor living. It’s easy to imagine lazy Sunday afternoons stretching into evening gatherings, the space alive with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses.

The neighborhood itself seems to exhale a collective sigh of contentment as evening approaches. Residents stroll past on their after-dinner walks, offering warm waves to neighbors relaxing on their front porches. This is exactly the kind of community connection Parrish envisioned when she chose this location.

A Legacy in the Making

As the sun sets over Southern Trace, casting long shadows across Whispering Path, it’s clear that what Parrish has created here is more than just another luxury home. It’s a testament to the power of transformation— both personal and architectural. From her early days as a nurse to her current role as one of Shreveport’s premier builders, Parrish has maintained the same dedication to care and attention to detail that marked her first career.

“When you’ve built and remodeled homes in areas from South Shreveport to Cross Lake over to North Bossier, you learn that every home has its own personality,” she reflects. “At the end of the day, building homes is about improving people’s lives. Whether it’s through thoughtful design, quality materials, or spaces that bring people together, every choice we make is in service of that goal.”

For those fortunate enough to call Whispering Path home, those choices have resulted in a residence that doesn’t just shelter, it elevates. In a world of mass production and quick turnarounds, Parrish has created something increasingly rare—a home with a soul, built by local hands, designed for modern living, and rooted in Southern tradition.

It’s more than a house—it’s a masterclass in Southern sophistication, where legacy meets luxury, and every detail tells a story of excellence, craftsmanship, and the transformative power of coming home.

French Sophistication Meets Southern Grace

Tucked gracefully within Bossier City’s exclusive and esteemed Oak Alley subdivision lies a home that seems plucked from the pages of a European fairytale. The neighborhood’s tree-lined streets and well-maintained surroundings reflect a commitment to excellence and a shared appreciation for refined living.

Near the back of the neighborhood, on the streets of Belle Maison, is an exquisite architectural marvel, channeling the romantic allure of a French château while seamlessly accommodating the demands of modern living. With its stately facade, meticulously curated interiors, and resort-style amenities, this residence is more than a home—it’s an invitation to live artfully.

Approaching Belle Maison is like arriving at a private estate in the French countryside. The exterior is a harmonious medley of old-world sophistication and contemporary polish. Stone accents, a steeply pitched roofline, and intricate wrought iron details transport you to the Loire Valley, while the pristine landscaping—featuring manicured hedges, a fountain, and towering crepe myrtles—grounds the home firmly in Southern charm.

According to realtor’s Debbie Gibson and Opha Phillips, the homeowners wanted to create something timeless—a home that feels like it’s always belonged, but with all the conveniences of today. Timeless, indeed. This is the kind of house that turns heads, sparks conversations, and sets the gold standard for what luxury can look like in northwest Louisiana.

Wide-plank oak floors stretch out underfoot, their soft patina a nod to the craftsmanship of yesteryear. Above, antique chandeliers cast a warm, inviting glow.
The heart of the home is the open concept living and dining area, an entertainer’s dream that balances scale and comfort. Anchored by a limestone fireplace—imported from France, naturally—the space invites gatherings both grand and intimate. The dining room, framed by arched doorways and accentuated with custom millwork, is where memories are destined to be made.
But it’s the kitchen that truly steals the show.
The additional bedrooms, each with ensuite baths, are havens of tranquility. Subtle, sophisticated design elements—think coffered ceilings and custom drapery—elevate these spaces beyond the ordinary. And for guests? A separate wing ensures privacy while maintaining the home’s cohesive elegance.

But hidden among the oak trees and azalea bushes of the exclusive Stonebridge community lies a thoroughly modern marvel that is redefining Southern living.
“This home is unlike anything else you’ll find in this part of the state,” says Debbie Hynes, the Century 21 agent listing the property. “It’s a true masterpiece of contemporary design that seamlessly blends cutting-edge style with all the comforts of a luxurious family home.”
Built in 2023 for that year’s Parade of Homes showcase, this home is the creation of Michael Jeane of MJ Construction—a respected local builder who has been wowing crowds with his innovative designs for over a decade. Along with Michael, designers Amanda Thaxton and George Plaxco were brought in to complete this incredibly beautiful space.
“Amanda and George really poured their hearts into this home,” Hynes explains. “They were determined to create something that would turn heads and challenge people’s preconceptions about what a ‘Southern home’ should look like.”
And challenge those preconceptions, it does. From the dramatically angled roofline to the seamless walls of glass that blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, every inch of this 2,887-square-foot stunner screams modern sophistication—and that’s before you even step inside.

From the soaring 21-foot ceilings in the great room to the sleek, high-end appliances in the gourmet kitchen, every square foot has been meticulously designed to maximize both form and function.
Take, for instance, the jaw-dropping custom iron staircase that curves up to the second-floor loft. Not only is it a stunning sculptural centerpiece, but Hynes explains that the open design was specifically chosen to maintain the airy, light-filled ambiance throughout the home. “That railing is a work of art,” she marvels. “The team at Iron Clad Fabrication did an incredible job creating something that’s both visually striking and functionally sound. It’s the kind of detail you just don’t see in your average house.”
The same can be said for the one-of-a-kind fireplace in the great room, which features a unique textured finish created through a meticulous layering process by The Finishing Touch design team. “Carrie Rodie and Jamie Davis really worked their magic with that fireplace,” Hynes says. “The end result is this gorgeous, almost 3D-like effect that adds so much depth and character to the space.”

Boasting wood-tile floors, a freestanding soaker tub, and a gigantic walk-in shower with gold fixtures, it’s a true oasis of luxury and relaxation.
“This primary bathroom is just stunning,” Hynes raves. “The team spared no expense in creating a space that feels like your own personal spa.
Speaking of the outdoor living spaces, Hynes highlights the thoughtful design choices that elevate this home’s impressive curb appeal.

Nestled in the heart of Shreveport’s Provenance neighborhood is a home that beautifully blends traditional charm with modern comfort. Step inside and see how it captures the essence of warm family living while paying homage to the rich architectural heritage of Louisiana.

Shreveport, LA. Provenance is more than just a neighborhood—it’s a lifestyle steeped in Southern tradition. With tree-lined streets, classic architecture, and community parks, the neighborhood is reminiscent of a bygone era where neighborly interactions encourage a strong sense of belonging. Here you will find the home of Nick and Carolyn Courville—a residence that proudly stands within this picturesque setting, seamlessly blending with the landscape while radiating a warmth that invites all to come inside.

As you approach the Courville residence, the influence of renowned Louisiana architect A. Hays Town is unmistakable. The home’s exterior, with its generous use of brick, deep overhanging eaves, and shuttered windows, pays homage to Town’s signature style. This architectural language—deeply rooted in the vernacular of the region—creates an immediate sense of place and history.

The façade—a masterful composition of warm brick and crisp trim—exudes a timeless charm that beckons visitors to step closer. A broad, welcoming porch stretches across the front of the home, its graceful columns supporting a pitched roof that provides the perfect shelter for lazy Sunday afternoons spent drinking lemonade and watching the world go by.

Bennett Sabatier, the architect behind this stunning home, perfectly captured the spirit of Town’s work while adapting it to the modern needs of the Courville family. His goal was to create a home that reflects a harmonious balance between Southern hospitality and architectural finesse—offering a glimpse into the essence of life in northwest Louisiana. Built in 2015 by Justin Sevier of Vintage Construction Group, the home originally boasted 2,000 square feet of elegantly designed living space. But it was not until the addition of a second story in 2022 that the home blossomed into its current impressive stature— measuring just over 3,000 square feet and featuring 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The thoughtful expansion allowed Nick and Carolyn to adapt their living space to accommodate their family’s needs, all while maintaining the home’s authentic charm.

As you step across the threshold into the home, one is immediately struck by the meticulous attention to detail that defines every corner in an atmosphere of refined elegance. The family room, with its tall ceiling, wainscoting, and hardwood floors, sets the tone for the entire home. “We wanted to create a home that honored the past while embracing the future,” explains homeowner Nick Courville. “Every design choice was made with this balance in mind.”

“We also wanted a home that would accommodate our love for hosting friends and family but also provide cozy nooks for quiet moments,” Carolyn Courville, Nick’s wife, continues. “This space does both beautifully.” This philosophy is evident throughout the home, where traditional elements like crown molding and wainscoting are juxtaposed against contemporary furnishings. The result is a space that feels at once familiar and fresh, comfortable yet undeniably charming. The design aesthetic showcases A. Hays Town’s influence, characterized by expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, classic brickwork, and a strikingly unique arched brick wall in the master bedroom. This captivating feature not only serves as a stunning architectural element but also adds an intimate touch to the master suite, creating a cozy retreat that reflects the serenity of the surrounding landscape. Most of the interior spaces are bathed in natural light, courtesy of thoughtfully placed transom windows that grace the home. These elegant architectural details not only enhance the home’s beauty but also evoke a sense of airiness and openness— inviting the outdoors inside. The interplay of light and shadow throughout the day highlights the exquisite craftsmanship present in every room, from the spacious living area to the beautifully appointed bedrooms.

The home not only functions as a dwelling but also as a canvas for family memories. Perhaps one of the home’s most captivating features is the flooring located in the bedroom of Nick and Carolyn’s two daughters— Anna and Mary Alice. “These boards,” Carolyn explains with a touch of nostalgia, “come from my father’s childhood home in Natchitoches. That house was built in 1946, just after World War II, and held so many memories for my dad’s family. Having a piece of it here is like carrying our family history with us.” The rich patina of the wood, bearing the marks of generations past, adds depth and character to the home that no new material could match. It’s a brilliant example of how thoughtful design can incorporate elements of personal history, creating a space that is truly unique to its inhabitants.

The kitchen flows effortlessly into the family area, offering cherished moments of connection. The carefully curated decor reflects Carolyn’s impeccable taste, with art pieces that pay homage to Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage adorning the walls.

An enclosed sun porch offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The home’s landscape design mirrors the home’s traditional aesthetic, incorporating native plants and lush greenery that flourishes in the Louisiana climate.

“We designed the sunroom and upstairs playroom with our girls in mind,” Carolyn shares. “We wanted to give them places to explore and use their imaginations— places with plenty of sunlight and color. We want some of their fondest memories to be of their childhood home.”

Where trends come and go, the Courville home remains steadfast in its appeal. The combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern functionality ensures that it will stand the test of time. With every room telling a story, the home is a testament to the family’s commitment to preserving their legacy while creating a space for future generations to cherish. The thoughtful design choices made by both Nick and Carolyn shine through in every corner of the home. Each element— from the iconic arched brick wall to the elegant transom windows to the reclaimed floors—reflects a dedication to quality and artistry that is becoming increasingly rare in contemporary architecture.

“This home is not just a structure,” Carolyn adds. “It’s a place where our family grows, learns, and loves.” In an era where the notion of home is continually evolving, the Courville residence embodies the enduring spirit of Louisiana’s architectural heritage. With its thoughtful design, familial ties, and love woven into every detail, this home is not just a place to live—it is a cherished sanctuary, a canvas for memories yet to be made, and a testament to the timeless allure of Southern living.

It’s 8 AM on a crisp October morning. While most of Shreveport is just beginning to stir, Atchison is already holding court. The Glass Hat, an unlikely venue to discuss this multimillion- dollar gala, provides the perfect backdrop to discuss this year’s event.

“Christmas in the Sky isn’t just a party,” Atchison proclaims, her voice carrying the gravel of someone who has spent years rallying troops of volunteers and sweet-talking sponsors. “It’s a love letter to the arts, written in neon and sequins.”

This year on December 14th, Louisiana Downs will metamorphose into a playground that would make even the most jaded Vegas veteran do a double take. Under the theme “It’s Vegas, Baby!”, it promises to be a fever dream of flamingos, Elvis impersonators, and high-stakes glamour.

At the helm of this creative juggernaut is Sandi Kallenberg—Chairman of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC). According to Atchison, “Sandi created the first gala in 1982 and has been the visionary for each Christmas in the Sky gala since then.” Alongside her, Sandi’s daughter-inlaw, Heidi Kallenberg, serves as the Chairman of Christmas in the Sky (SKY).

Elizabeth Kennedy and Ro White serve as Co-Chairs, forming a triumvirate of leadership that keeps this massive undertaking on track. “It’s like conducting an orchestra,” Atchison explains. “Every section needs to be in perfect harmony for the magic to happen, and these ladies do a magnificent job! I am merely the Chief Implementor!”

The Management Team—the unsung heroes of the fundraising efforts— work tirelessly behind the scenes. Caroline Marston-Brazzel chairs the Sponsorships Committee, with Kelsey Kiper as her right hand. “Securing sponsorships is an art form in itself.
For the oenophiles, Mark McKay and Rick Simpson oversee the Wine Auction, ensuring that the libations are as exquisite as the event itself. Margaret Green, heads the Collectibles Auction, bringing a touch of nostalgia and rarity to the bidding frenzy. Henry Price, President of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, provides crucial leadership and support to the entire team.

Since its inception, Christmas in the Sky has been the lifeblood of SRAC’s free community arts programs— pumping a staggering $20 million into the local economy. “We’re not just throwing a party,” Atchison insists, her eyes blazing with the fervor of a tenured veteran who has decades of experience. “We’re building a legacy. Every kid who picks up a paintbrush because of our programs, every mural that brightens a forgotten corner of the city—that’s the real jackpot.”

For Atchison, this hasn’t been “just a job” for the past 42 years—it’s been a calling. “The magic of Christmas in the Sky is that it’s a blank canvas for creativity. We give our artists a theme and then let their imaginations run wild. The results are always beyond our wildest dreams.”

Speaking of artists, the Production Team is where the rubber meets the road—or in this case, where the glitter meets the dance floor. Led by veteran Sky Design Chair Linda B. Goldsberry and Co-Chair Donna Poimboeuf, this team is responsible for transforming Louisiana Downs into a Vegas wonderland. “Linda will make a cardboard box look like the Bellagio, when given half a chance,” Atchison confides with a grin.

The culinary experience is just as carefully orchestrated. Food Director Chef Ryan Gillespie is curating a menu that would make any Vegas connoisseur jealous. Chef Ryan has selected a 5-star lineup of area celebrity chefs and is assisted by SKY Event Manager Exzavia Mitchel to bring the flavors of the Strip to SKY from high-end cuisine to comfort food favorites, every bite is designed to transport the guests to Sin City with “sin”sationally delicious offerings. Let us not forget the entertainment, which rivals a Vegas showroom, featuring the COZMOPOLITANZ band from Jackson, Mississippi, DJ Hot Boy Yoshi, breakdancers, singers, dancers from Northwestern State University, and a cadre of performers from Spinner Entertainment.

All in all, there are over 500 designers and volunteers helping pull this off. The Krewe of Elders, a key volunteer group for Christmas in the Sky, has even adopted the event as their major “community give back.” They work every Wednesday (starting in July) to help with the SKY’s sets and props. But beneath the glitz and glamour lies a deeper purpose. The event funds arts education, public art installations, and supports local artists. For instance, ArtBreak, a festival showcasing student art, receives significant funding from the gala’s proceeds. Atchison’s eyes light up as she describes the recently installed Bakowski Bridge of Lights, where students learn to create light shows that illuminate the Texas Street Bridge. “You should see these kids,” she confesses, her voice softening with pride. “They’re coding, they’re storytelling, they’re lighting up the sky. And it all starts here, with one ‘phantasmagorical’ night in December.”

The commitment to the art’s community is evident in every aspect of the event. Local restaurants and mixologists collaborate on themed menus that would make any Vegas sommelier jealous. Area musicians and performers spend months perfecting acts that will keep the party going until the wee hours. Even the silent auction items— always a highlight of the night— showcase the best of local artisans alongside luxury experiences and coveted memorabilia.

As our conversation winds down, Atchison reflects on her impending retirement. In May 2024, she stepped down as the Executive Director of SRAC to focus all her energy on this year’s Christmas in the Sky. Current Executive Director of SRAC, Rebecca Bonnevier, a woman with twenty-four years of experience in “big name entertainment” will completely take over the reins of SRAC, which includes all future planning for Christmas in the Sky, on December 30, 2024. “Rebecca’s gonna knock ‘em dead,” Atchison says with a mix of pride and nostalgia. “But this last Sky—it’s bittersweet. What a way to go out, though … surrounded by 2,500 of my closest friends, all dressed to the nines and ready to dance the night away.”

As we prepare to leave, Atchison pauses. “You know, people ask me why I do this. Why put in all this work for one night? But it’s not about the one night. It’s about the next day and the day after that. It’s about a kid seeing their first musical performance, and an artist selling their first piece. It’s about making sure that in Shreveport, the sky’s always the limit.”

With that, she’s gone, swept out into the Shreveport morning, leaving behind the faint scent of ambition and creativity. In just a few weeks, she’ll preside over a spectacle that would make Sinatra himself tip his hat. But for now, she’s off to rally her troops— over 500 volunteers—to transform a racetrack into a wonderland, and to prove that sometimes, the house doesn’t always win- –sometimes, the whole community does.

One thing is abundantly clear—at this year’s Christmas in the Sky, Shreveport is going all in on the arts. And with Pam Atchison at the helm one last time, it’s a sure bet that this event will be the jackpot this city has been waiting for. What happens at Christmas in the Sky stays at Christmas in the Sky. Unless, of course, you’re talking about the memories, the inspiration, and the lasting impact on Shreveport’s vibrant arts scene.

In the bustling world of home design, where trends evolve at a dizzying pace, finding a residence that stands as a true reflection of its owners’ vision can be a rare achievement. For Jeff and Christiana Lyons, their home is not only a testament to architectural craftsmanship—but also a personal expression of comfort and belonging. Located in Shreveport’s Whispering Path at Southern Trace, the Lyons’ residence is a masterclass in transitional architecture—a style that harmoniously blends classic elements with modern sensibilities. Designed by architect Bennett Sebatier and his firm Sebatier Architecture, LLC, the home embodies a seamless fusion of timeless design and contemporary comfort. His design approach ensured that Jeff and Christiana’s vision was translated into a structure that feels both fresh and enduring—the perfect match for the family’s future aspirations.

Sebatier believes the beauty of transitional design is that it offers a bridge between the traditional and the modern, creating spaces that are both familiar and innovative. For the Lyons’ home, it was about finding that perfect balance—where every element feels intentional, and every detail contributes to a cohesive whole. The journey from inspiration to reality was as much about preparation as it was about the overall design and the end product. Jeff and Christiana’s initial foray into the world of home design began with a deep dive into Pinterest and Instagram, scouring images that resonated with their ideal vision. Their initial choice was a striking, transitionally crafted home in Charlotte, NC, and served as a springboard for their architectural blueprint. With Sebatier at the helm, the design began to slowly evolve into something uniquely suited to the couple’s family-oriented lifestyle.

Every corner of the Lyons’ home bears the mark of meticulous craftsmanship, thanks in no small part to homebuilder Wesley Thomas. Known for his unwavering attention to detail, Thomas brought an exceptional level of dedication to the project. His commitment ensured that the home was not only aesthetically pleasing, but also built to the highest standards of quality and durability.

“Wesley Thomas’ role in this project was pivotal,” says Jeff Lyons. “His ability to translate our dreams into a tangible reality while maintaining an extraordinary level of detail was remarkable. Every nuance of the design, from the custom cabinetry to the natural wood elements, reflects his expertise and passion.”

The home’s interior spaces are a celebration of natural light and open, airy layouts. The decision to use white oak flooring throughout, complemented by neutral walls and rugged reclaimed wood beams, creates a serene and inviting atmosphere. The front façade’s expansive windows, which have earned the home the affectionate nickname “The Glass House,” flood each room with natural light, reinforcing the couple’s goal of a space that feels both invigorating and peaceful.

The collaboration didn’t end with Sebatier and Thomas. The Lyons enlisted a team of specialists to perfect every aspect of their home. Interior designers Kristen Kirk and Hannah Beth Smoak worked their magic to create spaces that are both functional and beautiful. Meanwhile, Christopher Randel from The Cottage curated the windows, doors, and appliances—ensuring a seamless integration of style and performance. Throughout the home, thoughtful design choices create spaces that are both functional and inspiring. The centerpiece is a massive island topped with exquisite quartzite, surrounded by custom white oak cabinets stained slightly darker than the natural white oak floors for subtle contrast. “The kitchen is where I spend a lot of time,” Jeff explains, “so it had to be both beautiful and functional. The customized cabinetry and clever design choices make cooking a joy.” The great room, with its impressive 16’ x 10’ bi-fold door, exemplifies the home’s connection to the outdoors. This feature allows the living space to extend onto the patio, making it an ideal setting for entertaining and relaxation. The attention to detail extends beyond the physical structure it permeates every aspect of the Lyons’ lifestyle within their home. Wide-trunked cypress trees lure photographers, boaters, and nature lovers of all types. A bonus is that it is located a short half-hour drive from Shreveport and Bossier City. If you want to experience north Louisiana’s pristine wetlands at their wildest—this is the place to be. And, if you’re looking to buy a lakefront, state-of-the-art property that is full of charm and sophistication, look no further.

Nestled on a private peninsula in a finger of Lake Bistineau known as “Spring Branch” is an 11-acre estate known as Sanctuary. Behind its private gate you’ll find a pristine contemporary main house, a guest house, panoramic views, and over 1,200 feet of seawall. Listed for $5.25 million by REALTORS® Lynn Roos and Adrienne Frierson of Coldwell Banker Apex, this striking residence features a design unlike anything in the area. If it reads like a modern-day take of Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden,” architect Mike McSwain doesn’t mind. If it reads like a love poem to the surrounding forest and lake, even better.

“It was a purposeful intention to weave the building into the landscape,” says McSwain, a Shreveport architect whose firm specializes in contemporary design. In 2004, he was hired to create a utopian vision for the homeowner—one that unplugs from city life.

The main goal was for the future home to be nestled into the existing hillside and engage with nature. General contracting services were provided by Shreveport’s premier design-build construction company Commercial Construction & Development (also known as CC&D).

Embracing a simplistic design, the main structure took four years to design and complete. As you snake down the driveway, the house seems hidden, as if it had just crawled out of the earth—and there are minimal differences in material deployment inside and out of the home. There is a spirit of escape, as well as of personal discovery—seeing something that rises out of somewhere uniquely special—was a big part of the design. The visioning, the framing of spaces and the detailing was meticulously planned. As a designer, McSwain recalled how he was constantly challenged by the homeowner. “He was a collaborative partner from beginning to end. It was a fun process, and final results speak for themselves.”

Though modern, the home’s vernacular focused on cultivating a vibrant, family-centric lifestyle melding indoor and outdoor gatherings. “Taking advantage of the lake views was key, as was creating a home that would seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living,” says McSwain. To create these seamless spaces between indoor and outdoor, McSwain integrated the structure using the terrain to his advantage. By positioning decks and patios—over 8,000 square feet in total—he was able to take advantage of the lake to beautifully capture the surrounding views.

The interiors are clean-lined and spare yet warm, making use of materials for the custom cabinetry, unique flooring, and exposed ceiling beams throughout. These floor-to-ceiling steel-frame glass walls on the main level bring 180-degree views directly into the main living areas with as little obstruction as possible. All primary living spaces—such as the family room, dining area, and kitchen— were placed strategically next to exterior living spaces, where Nana sliding glass doors open for airflow (if desired). A tall ceiling helps keep the space cool. While the architect admitted that the focus was the outdoors, he also wanted the interiors to be easy and comfortable.

The modern, exaggerated roofline combines form and function. And because of the contemporary design, the architect wasn’t constrained by traditional details—allowing the structure to have a clear and strong relationship with the environment. By night, the home glows from the inside thanks to the abundance of windows. While public living spaces are exposed to nature with its expansive glass windows and doors, as a counterpoint, private spaces—like bedrooms SBMAG.NET | JULY 2024 59 and bathrooms—are cloistered for privacy. “Those spaces feel more cocoon-like and intimate,” says McSwain, making their attention to design and detail unparalleled. The primary suite offers two bathrooms separated by an oversized walk-in closet.

In all the bedroom suites, the same floor-to-ceiling window design frames the view of the outdoors. Hurd windows offer an elevated living experience—featuring a unique design component that allows fresh air to be brought inside. Two types of environments— exposed and intimate—are linked through a series of intentional passages. “Movement through the building was very important—how you arrive and what you see as you circulate between the spaces,” says McSwain. For instance, moving up the stairs, you feel as if you are outside, with similar materials in the stairwells are carried to the porches and patios. “When you move through the building, there is a choreography where you understand the site more clearly because of the views you see through the different windows,” says McSwain. “And even though this is a very large house, there is a ‘tease’ of what lies around the corner. You can never see everything at once—which, as a designer, I find absolutely fascinating.”If connecting with all spaces was important, that meant that finding the right interior designer was paramount. That’s why the homeowner brought in interior designer Kirk Thomas. For anyone who steps foot in the home, they would immediately sense that a lot of inspiration came from Kirk Thomas— referring to the sleek minimalism prevalent throughout the interior rooms. Thomas fleshed out the luminous interior spaces with an eclectic blend of art and decor. For example, some walls are adorned with custom Venetian plaster wallpaper—offering a symphony of design and craftsmanship that invites you to experience luxury at its finest. Each stroke of that plaster tells a story of meticulous craftsmanship, creating a canvas that transforms the living spaces into a work of art. A one-of-akind custom limestone “hanging” fireplace, expertly crafted from Portugal, was thoughtfully designed to allow stunning view of the lake as you enter the front door.

1. You Don’t Scare Easily.

There’s a difference between bluff and true courage; confident men have courage without all the bluster. Being able not to be scared easily is not about being fearless or invincible, but rather having a healthy respect for the things that should inspire fear while also having the confidence to face them head-on.

2. You Can Laugh At Yourself.

Confident men know that laughter is often the best medicine and that by laughing at yourself, you can diffuse tension, build connections, and find joy in life’s ups and downs. Anyone with a complex about being laughed at is likely hiding insecurities of their own.

3. You Are Comfortable In Your Own Skin.

Confident, they know their own worth and believe in their ability to make things happen. You don’t try to be something you are not. Instead, you focus on being the best version of yourself. As a result, confident men exude a quiet strength that is hard to ignore. You are the type of man who is comfortable taking risks and embracing change. And while you may not always achieve your goals, you never give up—your persistence and determination will see you through to success.

When it comes to success in life, it pays to be a risk-taker. Confident men are not afraid to take chances and seize new opportunities. You understand that failure is a part of life, and you are willing to take risks in order to achieve your goals. Playing life safe isn’t an option. While there is no guarantee of success, confident men know that the rewards are worth the risk.

5. You Know How To Compromise.

It’s easy to get carried away with always getting what you want, but truly confident men know how to compromise, haggle, or just negotiate for a mutually beneficial outcome. A confident man is never greedy because he knows his value—he knows exactly how much value people should give him in return. Compromise is simply a means to an end.

They set high standards for themselves and live lives that inspire others. Their positive attitude and confident body language make them stand out in a crowd. Look no further than the Thaxton home in Pierremont (August 2023) for inspiration. These tile shapes have made appearances for hundreds of years, and though the shapes aren’t new, the variety of tile sizes available has given them a refresh. Opt for tiles with combos of white, gray, and black to nail that classic vintage aesthetic. Alternatively, try larger tiles paired with your cabinets, like the SB home feature from September 2023, boasting touches of metallics and iridescent glazes

This is particularly true of features such as natural pools, which filter themselves using plants and can enhance your landscaping and your use of the yard.

Another element that’s showing up in outdoor living spaces is the outdoor fireplace. Firepits have long been a popular addition to outdoor spaces, but new outdoor fireplaces are a more permanent addition meant to make your patio feel much more like a living room than ever before.

Mixing textures and fabrics feels more relevant as we head into 2024. Consider balance, movement, and direction, and whether you want the feel of the space to be soothing or energizing. If you have a long linear rug, for example, you can either intentionally carry that theme through with vertical patterns up a wall or completely break it up with a solid or more organic rounded feel to furniture and walls that stop the line. From April 2020, a midcentury modern home on Cross Lake used dark accents in small doses, such as the sitting room chairs, couch, and tufted ottoman, which perfectly contrast with the exposed brick, fireplace, and white backdrop without overwhelming it. Decorative rugs softened the look—a look is repeated for emphasis in adjacent spaces.

The thrill of combining these items is incorporating modern pieces into more traditional spaces, or vice versa, such as tossing a French Louis chair into a modern space. Or do as Mary Patrick Baucum (October 2021) did with her dining room, which perfectly blended the common threads between the objects—like color, texture, and shape. Just don’t go overboard by adding too many periods into one room. Also, say goodbye to the standard-looking light fixtures and opt for something that makes a statement instead. With today’s lighting technology, you can experiment with globe styles, heights, and finishes to create a custom statement.

The transition to custom closet solutions marks a pivotal moment in home design—just as Yvonne Davlin did with her closet (September 2022). This personalized space was tailored to fit her unique lifestyle, ensuring that every inch was optimized for efficiency and aesthetic appeal. Her custom closet perfectly showcases how we think about personal space, from bespoke shelving units to intricate drawer systems. Today’s trend is leaning towards minimalistic designs that offer both elegance and functionality. Sleek lines, subtle color palettes, and innovative materials are now at the forefront of cabinet design.

Shreveport, LA. Midcentury modern is a term that’s thrown around a lot these days. But what is it really? Midcentury modern architecture is not simply anything that was designed and built in the middle of the 20th century, but, in fact, an architectural style with a defined set of principles and influences. To this day, the style continues to influence contemporary architecture in ways both big and small.

In the mid-1950s, local real estate developer Henry “Hank” Bronner began constructing a home in Shreveport’s South Highlands neighborhood. This new home was to be designed in the midcentury vernacular of the time, inspired by the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, and Charles Eames. The house was for Bronner’s first wife, Louise, and their daughters. It would be a true testament to the midcentury style with sustainable and innovative design, clean lines, minimal ornamentation, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an emphasis on nature. Sixty-four years later, Mrs. “Cissie” Bonner—Hank Bronner’s second wife—decided to put the home up for sale.

For Robert May, owner of Watertight Roofing and Construction, the midcentury style seems to be a product of specific design elements. “I think it’s really the materials, the open flowing spaces, and the real sunny feel to them that draws people to the architectural style to this day.” Upon learning that the Bronner home was for sale, his curiosity peaked. Initially, May just wanted a tour of the home before it sold. And, since he wasn’t officially in the market for a new home, he figured there wouldn’t be any harm in looking, right? May simply walked up to the front door, rang the doorbell, and introduced himself to Ms. Bronner.

Upon passing through the front door, May was amazed that most of the original elements of the home were still intact. He was immediately drawn to the floor-to-ceiling windows, the open floor plan, the built-in storage, the functionality, and the intentional connection to its natural surroundings. “Oh, yeah,” added May, referring to the manicured landscaping. “Seeing the backyard was a huge plus. Combine that with all the interior features; this was the house for me.” So, he bought it.

After purchasing the home, May knew from the start that any renovation would mean maintaining a careful balance between preservation and updates as he made decisions on what and how to move forward. Many details, as he would discover in the ensuing months, were hidden, disassembled, or reused elsewhere in the home. “Being in the construction business I knew where the line was and walked it successfully,” May says. “I wanted to approach everything I did very carefully.”

And carefully, he did. Aside from a few minor cosmetic changes, which mainly consisted of painting and electrical upgrades, May stayed true to the midcentury style.

Today, the 3-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home features the same footprint as when it was originally built—featuring the original open floorplan with large, custom floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe the space with natural light. These windows allow a ton of light to seep into the home—providing wonderful, breathtaking views of the beautifully landscaped backyard, patio, and saltwater pool area. The living area is anchored by an offset ledge stone fireplace set against a paneled wall and built-in bookshelves, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. A corner pole light provides some whimsy, as the room is decorated in era-appropriate accent pieces and furniture.

May handpicked many of the items that make up the home which gives it an awesome retro vibe. To say he is an avid George Rodrigue fan is an understatement. His works are seen in abundance throughout the home. “I must have more Rodrigue’s than anyone in Shreveport,” admits May. Appliances, countertops, and flooring were all carefully added to help “modernize” the home which, luckily, do not diminish the midcentury appeal. One of the things that hasn’t been updated is the original lighting that illuminates the home when natural light isn’t available.

Ranging in size, the three bedrooms all have ample closet space and generously sized windows. The master bedroom has a private patio right off the sitting area, with a unique master bath with his and her spaces. It’s like having two bathrooms in one! Likewise, there are closets everywhere. In the foyer, living room, and hallways. Walk-in closets are abundant. “I bet the whole house has over 600-squre-feet of closet space,” May admits.

The landscaping in the backyard is architecturally appealing and practical. According to May, he sees the exterior patio and yard as an extension of the living room, which looks out onto the patio. And just like the interior, the design has a good flow. The main design elements for the backyard are the saltwater pool, patio with fireplace, and multiple seating areas connecting through lavish, well-kept landscaping. “The pool is 10-feet-deep,” says May. “And, because of the depth, the water stays cool all summer long.”

For May, this midcentury architectural home remains timeless. And even though it has been decades since the home was originally built, he believes it is now a perfect blend of past and present, with room to grow in the future. “Surprisingly, the house had been really well maintained for the past sixty-four years,” May says. “It is certainly my forever home—with both old memories and new ones.”

Lauren and Brad also saw beauty through nature’s eyes, bringing in a palette inspired by outdoor views. The open floorplan easily allows light to flow through the tall windows, casting light and shadow against the tranquil neutral-colored walls. “We wanted to create a serene and calm open concept design with lots of natural light,” claims Lauren. “Using as many windows as possible helped us achieve this goal.”

Engineered hardwood floors in “French Oak” invite barefoot moments. “Flooring was an important part of the design process. We wanted light wood floors that would create a flow throughout that felt calm and cohesive. There are so many ‘light-colored’ wood floor colors to choose from we had a hard time choosing. It was even more beautiful in person after first seeing it installed.”

“This project was right up my alley,” says Lauren. “I love the peacefulness of a quiet palette and the easy elegance that comes from mixing classic and contemporary styles—curating a unique assemblage of textiles, art, and furnishings—both modern and antique. There were very few rules.”

Never one to sacrifice form for function, Lauren took advantage of her designer acumen to be on-trend but traditionally rooted. “Antiques play an important role in my life, and this house is no exception,” says Lauren. “My selections aren’t richly stained, ornately carved, or extravagantly gilded. They are refined and charming, packed with character and charisma, and, to me, that sums up our home’s style.”
