But the real surprise came when she introduced me to the sweetest, most gentle human on the planet. I was so taken with him that I decided on the spot: this man’s story needs to be told. He’s the genuine article, a quiet hero working behind the scenes to bring comfort to patients going through tough times.

Fashion trends will always come and go. However, there are some items that will always remain relevant no matter what the season.

These wardrobe staples tend to be timeless. They are also very versatile and you can style them in a myriad of different ways. By making sure you keep them in your closet you will ensure that you can always have an outfit that looks polished and effortless at the same time.

The best part of all of this is that these staples can also be paired with your trendier pieces. This will help you to create a fresh look no matter what year or season it is. Take a look at the main pieces that you should have in your wardrobe.

A Classic White Shirt

One item that you should always have on hand is a crisp white shirt. It’s going to look professional when it should and casual when necessary. You can even wear it on nights out when it is styled just the right way. A white shirt can be tucked into tailored pants for a more polished look. You can wear loose jeans if you want to be more relaxed. Its versatility is what makes it one of the best pieces that you can have in your wardrobe.

A Pair of Well Fitting Jeans

Denim is one thing that never goes out of style. Having jeans that sit well is essential for every wardrobe. Whether you like skinny, wide leg or straight, the right jeans are going to take you from casual day to an evening dinner.

All you have to do is change your accessories and maybe your shoes. Jeans also form the perfect base for your trendier items. You can wear it with oversized sweaters, jackets or even trendy corset tops if you want to create a look that is bold and modern.

The Little Black Dress

No list of wardrobe staples can be complete unless the little black dress is mentioned. It has a timeless appeal because it is so simple.

You can dress it up or dress it down. Wear it with heels and jewelry when you want it look more upscale or you can just keep it minimal and wear flats, and jewelry with it.

The little black dress is always going to adapt to your style as well as your needs. This makes it an extremely reliable piece that you must have in your wardrobe.

Make sure you invest in a style that is going to flatter your body and you’ll be wearing it for many years.

Comfortable Yet Stylish Footwear

Shoes will make or break your outfit, always remember that. Have a pair of flats, classic ankle boots or even versatile sneakers will serve you well across many different looks.

Making sure that you have a few reliable pieces that give you style and comfort is what ensures that you always have options available no matter what the occasion. The key is to make sure that you are always choosing neutral colors as well as high quality materials that will last for a long time.

The annual ritual of “back-to-school” has begun. The whirlwind of shopping is just about over; you’ve segued from a summer schedule to a school bell schedule. Setting your child up for success makes it all worthwhile.

Getting kids ready physically, with new supplies and clothes, is important for practical reasons. A fresh notebook and a well-fitting uniform can boost a child’s confidence and sense of readiness. But the true significance lies in the mental and emotional preparation. I always found the hardest part of back to school was establishing a routine. Especially after our sons got older. They wanted to stay with the summer “sleeping until noon” routine. Suddenly we were shifting bedtime and wake-up times, setting homework hours not to mention keeping up with their sports schedules. I can’t tell you how many quick dinners we’ve eaten sitting at a ballpark.

Now that I can look back on those hectic days, I can smile and sigh and say honestly – I wouldn’t trade them for the world. For me, preparing for back-to-school was a mission not just about ticking items off a list; it’s about nurturing independence, responsibility, and a love for learning. It was about empowering my boys with the tools and confidence they needed to thrive, ensuring they stepped into the classroom not just with new pencils, but with a sense of purpose and preparedness that will serve them throughout the academic year and beyond.

Enjoy these days while you can. Because, in a blink of the eye, they’ll be gone.

You can’t throw a measuring cup down
a grocery store aisle in Louisiana without hitting some sort of Bayou Magic product. Whether it’s spices, beans or rice, Bayou Magic has been a Cajun seasoning staple since August 17, 1987. That’s when Sidney Campbell and the Bayou Magic team made their first official sale of 18 total items to the Albertsons on Southfield Road in Shreveport.

Among the items were rice mixes, jambalaya mixes and seasoning shakers.

Years before, down around Ville Platte, Bayou Sid and the gang had been getting their marketing and selling done grassroots style.

“We used teaspoons, tablespoons and cups,” says Campbell. “We went around the dining room table and put it in Ziploc bags with wrap-around labels.”

“We would have people — some friends and children who were helping us — who would take the bags home, sit on the front porch and wait for the distributor to come by and dish them out to the buyers.”

To get the word out back in the day, Bayou Sid would go from store-to-store handing out free samples of beans, rice and seasoning to the store managers.

“Here you go, I’m just going to leave
that for you,” Campbell would say. It didn’t take long for the stores to come calling Campbell.

Make you wanna cut a rug!

Bayou Sid has been getting jiggy with it ever since. It takes a team, though.
Bayou Sid says he gets a lot of recipes from his wife. “The recipes come from my wife’s folks,” Campbell says. “We use authentic Cajun and Creole recipes from people who were run out of Nova Scotia in the 1800s and settled down south.”

The authenticity and integrity to the craft is what keeps people coming back
to Bayou Magic. Consumers love the product and employees love working for the guy.

“Everyone who started with us worked with us up until they died,” says Campbell. Talk about loyalty.
“I call myself the originator, and everyone else is duplicators,” Bayou Sid says. Campbell has even done cooking shows for Southern Living. They know him there as ‘The Man in the Hat.’ He would go on there and show them how to cook a five- course meal in 30 minutes. Throughout the years Sid Campbell has been cooking it up, there have been times where people wanted a piece of the Bayou Magic pie. Or the whole thing. “Marshall Bass at Nabisco offered me $8 million,” Campell says.

That’s why Campbell has been in business, officially for over 37 years. Unofficially, even longer than that. Not just in the south, either. You can find Bayou Magic products coast- to-coast now.

They started expanding early on to places like Dallas and Atlanta, but if you’re craving some jambalaya in Joplin, Mo. or some Creole flavor in Culver City, Calif., just run to the store and start working your magic.

Sid’s products are in most all grocery stores. You can also find Sid’s products online any time. And they have some exciting news upcoming. Bayou Magic is cooking up some more recipes and other options for people who may be looking for healthier options.

Stay tuned for that. Go out and buy you some Bayou Magic from Bayou Sid. Tell your friends, although they surely already know. Maybe you have relatives or friends who are not from the bayou, but you want to put them onto something special. This guy has been doing this a long time, and it shows.

I can’t help but wonder how he has been able not only to sustain a business for this long, but also to grow, adapt and soon even release new products.

Of course, she was! Sports are not a part of her life. They are her life. Setters lives and breathes this stuff.

“The No. 1 thing that makes Missy great is she is a fan,” says 2019 Independence Bowl chairman Art Carmody.

“She is watching and following on a weekly basis, just like I am,” says Carmody. “A lot of bowl executives I’ve met throughout the years are not fans. Missy cares about football. She cares about Shreveport-Bossier City and all the events we do for the area. She doesn’t just put on a game in December.”

The game in December is probably the main thing the casual fan would think about when it comes to the I-Bowl, but there is a lot more to it than that.

The Independence Bowl Foundation is raising money throughout the year with sponsorships and ticket sales, but they are also providing philanthropy for the people in our communities.

One of the ways the I-Bowl Foundation gives back to the community is through Extra Yard for Teachers, a program in partnership with the College Football Playoff Foundation to raise money for teachers.

The I-Bowl Foundation has donated over $85,000 in the last three years combined to teachers and schools in Caddo, Bossier, and Desoto Parishes.

Just this past year alone, they donated $11,000 to 23 local teachers through the Touchdown for Teachers initiative.

The 13th Annual Youth Football Clinic will be held in June again this year. It’s a free clinic the I-Bowl Foundation puts on for Shreveport-Bossier, with hundreds of boys and girls ranging from ages 5-13. They’ve had participating coaches from Louisiana Tech, Grambling, Centenary, Northwestern State, and Sam Houston State.

They will also be partnering with the United States Tennis Association and Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club to host a junior tennis tournament in April.

There is also the I-Bowl Foundation’s Kickoff K’s every year. In recent years, it has been a 5K/Half Marathon format.

One year, I won the I-Bowl 10K and got to take home a miniature Lombardi Trophy. Did it feel good to be a champion? Yes. Yes, it did. I’m trying to say that it’s more than just the game in December.

Inching closer to kickoff, there’s Bowl Week, where this year, Setters and the I-Bowl pulled out all the stops for the players and coaches from Texas Tech University and the University of California, Berkeley.

As soon as the teams arrived in town, they were treated to a huge welcome party at the RiverView Theater (formerly Shreveport Civic Theater), complete with Family Feud-type games and meals featuring whole hogs and bacon-wrapped alligator.

A whole hog? A whole hog-wrapped gator?

“Those Louisianimals down there are something else, Mom,” said one of the Cal players when they got back home, maybe. Probably not. But also very possible. The players also had access to the enhanced hospitality rooms and lounges this year.

The crew from Draft Picks Barbershop in Baton Rouge made an appearance, giving all the players fresh cuts.

However, when the game does roll around, Missy Setters is rocking and rolling. In go-mode.

“I think my watch said I walked nine miles during the game last year,” says Setters. “I’m running around, putting out fires. I’ll be down on the field some or up in the box.” “You prepare yourself as much as possible the entire year,” Setters says. “Gameday is much the same.” “It is this culmination of everything,” she says. “It’s this beautiful, exciting point we reach. This is what we work for. But once kickoff happens, now it’s about the game.”

This past year was also the first pre-Christmas game since Setters has been at the helm.

“I believe this was the first year since I’ve been here that the game was before Christmas, so Ross and I got to go to the Natchitoches Christmas Festival,” Setters said. She also said she liked having the game before Christmas this year because it allowed the fans to get back home for the holidays.

The 47th edition of the Independence Bowl kicked off in primetime this year for all of us in CST at 8:15 pm. The Red Raiders beat the Golden Bears, 34-14, on December 16th. It was shown on ESPN, as it has been for over 30 consecutive years.

“ESPN always tells us when the bowl is going to be,” she says. “Ideal kickoff time is late afternoon or early evening.”

A natural-born leader, Setters has also picked up a thing or two along the way from some idols of hers.

One of those people is Tina Kunzer-Murphy, former executive director of the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.

“It was important to watch the way she handled herself,” says Setters. Kunzer-Murphy was the only female executive director of a bowl game in 2006 when Setters became executive director of the I-Bowl by unanimous vote. Being one of only two female bowl executive directors for a time isn’t something Setters even thinks about now.

“At first, I’m sure there was a novelty to it,” she says. “Now, it’s just part of the deal.”

“I think it’s enjoyable to watch it evolve over time,” she says. “I think you’ve got a really good group now. There is a lot more diversity in the room now, and people are getting incredible experience.”

If Missy Setters ever gets any downtime, husband Ross says she enjoys working in the yard. He says she doesn’t get to play as much golf as she may like, but at least she still gets to keep up with it.

She is always watching to see how her local LSU people are holding up, like Shreveport native Sam Burns. I asked Setters what she had planned for the rest of the day. She said she had an executive committee meeting at noon. But we’re eons away from kickoff! Again, that’s the only thing a casual fan like me considers. I don’t see all the behind-the-scenes upkeep and philanthropy that Missy Setters and the Independence Bowl Foundation put on year-round to benefit our community and give back to teachers and kids. Setters says she looks forward to the teams coming into town and kickoff because then, it’s about the game. But there is no game without Missy. She’s the blueprint. She sets the standard. She also sets a really great example for kids, adults, players, and our community.

The good news is you don’t have to wait until kickoff to get involved. If you have kids, check out the free Youth Football Clinic in June or any of the other I-Bowl events.

And be sure to go to

Governor Landry’s swearing-in ceremony and inaugural address were held the day before he officially took office (historically, the second Monday of the year at noon) because of forecasted storms the next day, hopefully not ominous foreshadowing of the next four years.

Governor Landry got the who’s who of endorsements from the Republican Party, not only in the state but in the country: former President Donald Trump, his son Donald Trump, Jr., current Speaker of the House, and our representative, Mike Johnson, as well as the Republican Party of Louisiana, all officially endorsed the governor. Landry has earned these high-profile endorsements from a body of work not only as Louisiana’s Attorney General but going back to his time in Congress representing the Third District, where he made waves for holding up a sign that said, “Drilling=Jobs” during President Obama’s address to a joint session of Congress.

Years later, nothing has changed: Landry rose to national prominence as our Attorney General after his stint in Washington, D.C. Not content to only oppose President Obama in Congress, Landry joined 17 other Republican attorneys general in a lawsuit in 2018 (ultimately called Texas v. United States at the Supreme Court, where it wound up) challenging the Affordable Care Act as unconstitutional once the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 repealed the individual mandate tax penalty for not having health insurance. A district court judge in Texas ruled in favor of the lawsuit, prompting celebration from its proponents but condemnation for Landry from Governor Edwards, saying he “did not think this through.” That lawsuit was eventually struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in a 7-2 ruling because the Court determined Landry et al. did not have standing to sue. Landry was also part of a concerted effort led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton with nine other Republican attorneys general (one of whom eventually withdrew) in 2017 to pressure the Trump administration to finally rescind DACA, an Obama-era memorandum from the Department of Homeland Security, threatening legal action if he did not. “We are a nation of laws, not of men, and we must act in a way that respects the process of legal citizenship,” he said at the time. The Trump administration did terminate DACA after Landry’s effort, yet the Supreme Court later overturned the termination because it was considered “arbitrary and capricious.” Landry released a celebratory statement after a federal judge in Texas declared DACA unlawful and stopped new applications to the program in July of 2021, calling it a “win…for the rule of law” (DACA has been ruled against multiple times since its inception, including as recently as 2023, yet it still remains in judicial limbo, not officially legal, but not officially gone, either). Louisiana has approximately 2,000 DACA recipients.

Undaunted, Landry was also part of Texas v. Pennsylvania, again initiated by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, which challenged the election results in four states, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, for changing their election procedures unlawfully during the 2020 presidential election. This lawsuit, too, failed over justiciability; the Court ruled Texas did not have standing to sue other states. All of Landry’s vigor has not gone unrewarded, however; in June of 2018, he was voted president of the National Association of Attorneys General, ultimately making him the “top cop” of top cops. “I am thankful the nation’s chief legal officers have bestowed this tremendous honor upon me…Every state and territory has dealt with natural disasters, mass violence, or terror…I am optimistic that my initiative will offer resources and emergency plans that protect the people we serve,” he said after his win. Landry has also picked a federal fight with the Biden administration against COVID-19 vaccine mandates, which he won in the 5th Circuit Court.

At home, no policy arena was off limits. Landry sued Governor Edwards after Edwards appealed a district court’s enjoining his Executive Order JBE 2016-11, which was designed to protect LGBT state employees from discrimination at a time when there were no codified LGBT laws in Louisiana, in December 2016. Louisiana’s First Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Landry in November 2017, and Governor Edwards’ appeal to the state Supreme Court in March 2018 also failed when they declined to hear the case and agreed with the lower court’s ruling. Landry was also a key player in the highly publicized veto override by the state legislature for H.B. 648, which had been killed in committee at the time by the tie-breaking vote of Republican Senator Fred Mills. In response, Landry took to Twitter to say, “As attorney general for 8 years, I have worked hard to protect our children. I urge the full Senate to take up and pass HB 648. As governor, I would immediately sign this bill into law. Pediatric sex changes should have no place in our society.” The Senate then voted for the bill to change committees, where it received new life. The rest, as they say, is history. In Governor Landry’s inauguration speech, he made not-so-veiled swipes at LGBT teachings (and perhaps other subjects) in Louisiana schools, referring to its being taught as “the toxicity of unsuitable subject matter.” Expect consistency to be one of Governor Landry’s strengths, not a trait politicians are usually known for.

His campaign website states, “No child should be trapped in a failing school,” and he recorded a video message last year celebrating National School Choice Week. With his longstanding support, it is not a matter of if but when school choice legislation gets passed during his term. Governor Edwards vetoed a pro-school choice bill last year; there is no reason now why that bill or others like it won’t get another go-round and pass.

Governor Landry, a husband to his wife Sharon for over 20 years and father to son J.T. exudes a distinctly Cajun personality whose love for Louisiana radiates, and he could not hide it in his inauguration speech. Brimming with affection, he stated, “If America is a melting pot, then Louisiana is the gumbo that fills the pot.” Whatever policy decisions he may make over his tenure as governor and the legacy that he leaves, he likely already said the most defining thing to be remembered as governor: “If I had 100 lives to live, I would live them all in Louisiana.” His love for the state is undeniable, and his zeal for his causes cannot be denied.

The difference now is there’s nothing in his way to stop him.

He set his sights on the high-tech laboratories Byrd students use today for a variety of high-level research initiatives.
He looked back to his time in marketing with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer to begin to explore how to make it happen through building a coalition beyond the walls of Byrd.
“So I am at a public high school,” he said. “We sit around and wait for them to give us pencils and pens and erasers. You’re never going to get much more than that because they have a restricted budget, right? Not a knock on the educational system.

That’s just the way it is. But what’s to stop you from getting outside resources that are going to fund programs that benefit students.”
With the support of Principal Jerry Badgley — a “go-get-it” kind of person — Wrobel went to work.
“He said, ‘There’s a mountain there. Let’s find a way around it,’” Wrobel said of Badgely.
Wrobel pitched some ideas to Badgley at a dinner when the principal asked if Wrobel really thought this could happen. The teacher emphatically responded, ‘Yeah.”
“I had the lab experience,” he said. “I had never built a lab, but I knew how to use the equipment and what was needed.”
Wrobel, who has a bachelors degree in biology and masters degrees in both biology and cell and molecular biology, went to work researching what programs were available. He found Avantor Sciences — a company already on the state bid list — that could provide the equipment needed. The other side of the equation was raising money to purchase the equipment.
“Jerry Badgley was great about that,” Wrobel said. “He said, ‘You put a plan together. Tell me what you need. We can sell this because it’s really going to benefit the students.’ Donors are always looking for specific things they can say their money went toward.”
Fundraising was an easy sell. The Byrd Foundation supported the project, and a number of parents made donations, wrote grants and reached out to alumni for additional funds.
Wrobel also found Bio-Rad Laboratories, which had a curriculum already in place for a bio-technology course.
“Everything was spelled out,” he said. “It had the labs. It had the kits, and all the materials necessary. It was already built, and other top schools across the country were already using this. We had said we wanted to develop this into one of the best science programs you would get at any high school in the South.”
COVID slowed down the installation of the labs, now in their third year of operation. A lot has happened in that time, Wrobel said, in addition to the bio-technology classes it was designed for.

“My military experience taught me to let everybody do their own thing,” he said. “Let them take total charge of that section, and when they are done hand it off. That worked really well.”

He left the company when it downsized after Hurricane Katrina.
He left Byrd last August as Gnome Hollow, the company he launched with his wife, Tisha, grew. They hand pour scented candles and make loofa soaps.
“I was going home at night and making candles from 5 o’clock to 3 in the morning, getting two hours of sleep,” he said. “After a couple of years, something had to give.”

“The business wasn’t going to run on its own,” he explained. “It was a very difficult decision. And it still is. I remember sitting at the North Dakota State Fair. I had already put in my resignation, effective Aug. 1, but it was July 25. I was like, ‘I have a few days left. I can still cancel it.’ I white-knuckled it all the way to the end. Finally, Aug. 1 passed and it was executed. I was like, ‘All right that’s it.’ It’s scary.”

Wrobel said it is important to him to see the program at Byrd continue to succeed after his departure. He said he remains available as a backup as the programs expand.

“I have been so busy I haven’t had a lot of time to miss it,” he said of teaching. “I left a lot on other people’s plates. It got divvied up, but I hated doing that to people. Most all of them wanted it. They are all doing spectacularly great with it. The program is better now than when I was there.”

Some people can tell you almost exactly when they knew, just knew, what it was they were supposed to do with their life. That moment for Sarah Harris was in the 5th grade at South Highlands when she was chosen to design the cover for the 5th grade play playbill. That meant going to her art teacher’s house and working together to create her vision.

That is a big deal for an 11-year-old. The teacher, Judy Ball Johnson, played a big role in motivating and encouraging Sarah’s efforts. Fast forward to high school at Magnet and the legendary art teacher, Edward Allen. Sarah learned even more through CMH’s numerous art options that spanned the fine arts mediums – painting, mixed media, pottery, photography, drawing and more – under his tutelage. Sarah was also a member of an after-school art program led by Shirlene Alexander and Marabella Dunn.

By the time Sarah entered Centenary College, she had already studied art with Shreveport-Bossier’s art luminaries. She continued her work, earned an art degree with a minor in business, met Leif Sherry, the man she would marry, and armed with her faith in God and her love of art, she stepped out into the real world.

And then it hit her. If she wanted to earn a living, she would need more than a degree in art. She had always been intrigued with architecture, so the next step in her journey was to enroll in graduate school and pursue a degree in that field. While Sarah worked on her masters at Washington University in St. Louis, Leif was earning his advanced degree at Northwestern in Chicago.

The next stop on her journey would be an internship at the prestigious OKA Architect firm. Sarah professes that she learned so much more on the job (she was hired full time after that first year) than in the classroom. “I found it intriguing because it’s a lot like putting the pieces of a puzzle together. I’ve always thought I’d make a good detective because I like to figure things out,” said Sarah. Because she thought she and Leif would remain in the Chicago area, she moved to Grunsfeld Shafer Architects, a firm that specialized in high-end residential buildings. Then, wouldn’t you know, the couple’s path would land them in the Washington D.C. area where Leif was offered a job once he graduated. Sarah found her place in the Rippeteau Architecture Firm, known for residential, office spaces and historic restoration. In fact, Rippeteau did the work on a historic church’s steeple that was designed by the same architect that designed the nation’s Capital Dome.

The couple hit their first huge pothole in their life path. Leif became ill and was unable to work. To add to the crisis, Sarah was expecting their first child. And, she had broken her leg playing soccer. Her faith was being tested and suddenly, decisions had to be made that would affect the trajectory of Sarah’s journey. The next phase of her life brought her full circle to Shreveport, her home. While working for Mike McSwain Architects, she was involved in the Cyber Innovation Building and the renovation of the Municipal Auditorium. With another baby on the way, Sarah found it increasingly difficult to give 100% to her career. Her family became her priority.

So, she decided to work for herself, set her own hours and enjoy both career and family. Diamond B Designs was born. She got back into her art creating custom pieces for many Shreveport homes. She also drafted for interior designer Jenny Johnston. One of her favorite projects was one where the client, Bill Kendig, gave her free reign to remodel a pool house – putting full trust in her ability to bring two existing buildings together and utilizing dead cat space in the design. Everything was looking up again for the Sherry family when tragically, Leif passed away.

Project based learning means the students are learning academic material in a hands-on way. Any student can choose to join the Charis Lab, instead of a traditional classroom. Charis Lab takes the place of traditional core classes. Instead, these classes are taught through a digital platform. Students complete core classes in Charis Lab and still have their elective classes with their individual grade levels. First Baptist Church School chose to add the Charis Lab to offer a more innovative, hands-on style of learning. The Charis Lab is led by highly experienced teachers, Judith Reeves and Kristi McDonald. Mrs. Reeves guides a group of 3rd-5th grade students and Ms. McDonald guides a group of 6th-8th grade students.

In October, we went to visit one of Louisiana’s oldest graveyards, Oakland cemetery. Dr. Cheryl White from LSUS was our guide during the experience. We were very honored to be led by such an accomplished historian. The students spent the morning learning the history of Shreveport as told through the eyes of one of the greatest historians in the area. With a focus on Yellow Fever and the early settlers of Shreveport, many students used this opportunity to learn “research” doesn’t always mean reading books! Kendall Slack, a student in the Charis Lab said, “This field trip really made me think about the lives of those before us and how they’ve helped build our society.”

Involving the Community

Through interactions in creating these projects and inviting guest speakers, Charis Lab is always involving the community. Elizabeth Beard Deal from SB Magazine came to speak with the class and discuss what goes into the day-to-day activities involved in producing a magazine! The students began working right away. Dividing into teams, the students set out to create the story of the Charis Lab and its project-based learning style. They have set a goal to be published writers by the end of this school year!

The students are working together to create a short film for submission to the Louisiana Film Prize, Jr competition.

Students in the Charis Lab are showing academic improvement through hands on project based learning experiences and becoming interested in their community like never before – and as middle school students, community means something to these kids! Although they are busy from the morning bell to the afternoon bell, homework is not part of the program. Most of the learning happens while working on hands-on projects. The students love being able to be part of something bigger, but their favorite advantage to Charis Lab is, as student, Kennedy McCalman sums it up, “My mom is able to come home from work and cook dinner because she doesn’t have to help me with homework. We are eating dinner together now as a family.”

The doctor diagnosed it as a C7 incomplete spinal cord injury, meaning his spinal cord was still intact. It was better than a C7 complete, Taylor said.

“That means the spinal cord is completely severed,” he said of a C7 complete. “For them, it’s always that 0.000001… whatever percent chance. For me, the percentage for regaining movement was higher.”

“You drop into a certain depression,” he said. “From the time I got home, I didn’t really leave my room unless it was for a doctor’s appointment or to eat, or to be homeschooled. I didn’t feel like I needed to be social. I was afraid to go back because I was in a different physical state than I was at first.”

In April 2009, he returned to the Byrd campus. The plan was to be on campus for a few classes, up to half a day.

“I ended up the next day just going back full time,” Taylor said. “I realized when I got back, they were just so happy to see me it didn’t really matter.”

Taylor said he spent his junior year readjusting to being among a lot of people again. But that wasn’t his biggest challenge.

“I was having to deal with going to PT rather than going to practice,” he said. “It was a different type of working out, regaining my mobility.”

In his senior year, Taylor was discharged from rehab because his progress had plateaued, he said. “Like everybody else, you have fun your senior year,” he added.

He started college at LSUS the next fall. That was a wake-up call for him.

He finished that semester with a 1.11 GPA. “I think they were generous with the .11,” he said. So, he transferred to Southern University, where he found a good fit.

“It’s more like a small family, as far as people reaching out to you, saying you should probably do this,” he said. “Even if you don’t know what you’re going to do.”

Taylor received an associate’s degree from Southern, then returned to LSUS, where he received his bachelor’s degree in humanities in 2018.

Taylor set art aside after high school. When he picked it up again after college, it started out as just a pastime. But it ignited a spark in him. He continues to study art the way he once studied football.

“I realized I was still pretty good at this,” he said. “It went from there to watching YouTube videos. I said, ‘I can probably get better.’ Asking other artists how they did things. From there, it starts becoming a thing you’re obsessive with. It’s kind of like football. You get to where you actually like it. You’re not just out there playing.”

Taylor’s competitive nature kicked in, too. Instead of competing against other artists as he had competed on the football field, he began competing with himself to become a better artist. So, as he did in football, Taylor immersed himself in practice.

Those transmitters in the brain. You wonder why Floyd Mayweather is such a good boxer. It’s because he does the same thing over and over.”

In addition to being competitive, Taylor also is a perfectionist. So much so that in the early days of his art career, Taylor wouldn’t accept down payments for his work.

“I treasure quality over quantity,” Taylor said. “If it’s not up to what I like, I will have them throw it away and start over.”

Thomas Williams has been assisting Taylor since 2013 and has seen that perfectionism in action.

“People don’t know how many masterpieces he’s done that only the trash can has seen,” Williams said.

Williams admits to rescuing one of those works Taylor discarded. It hangs in the Williams house today. It’s a symbol of the respect Williams has for Taylor, his artwork, and his process.

“Me being with him all the time, assisting him and watching him, people don’t understand the process he goes through,” Williams said. “Seeing him go from a blank canvas to a finished painting, it’s amazing. I’m blessed every day to see him go through the process.”

Taylor has a job at General Dynamics. He continues to paint and anticipates having his first art show in February. He also is designing T-shirts and hoodies that feature his artwork.

“You want to make everything easier on yourself,” he said. “That’s what a lot of people don’t want to do. With any profession, you have to learn about it. You have to learn what makes it easier for you. If you’re working yourself to death and there are easier ways out there, you’re just being stubborn.”

Taylor is glad that art has written a new chapter for his life.

“For the longest time, I was the young man at Byrd who got injured playing football,” he said. “Now I am Norman Taylor the artist.
