Nestled in the lush heart of one of Shreveport’s most exclusive neighborhoods, this home isn’t just a testament to elegant design—it’s a statement to resilience and reinvention.

In Shreveport’s respected Southern Trace neighborhood stands a testament to the power of manifestation—a Mediterranean villa that its owner first spotted while pitching a business deal that would end in rejection. Today, that same house has been transformed into an elegant estate that bridges Old-World craftsmanship with modern luxury, all thanks to a restaurateur who refused to take “no” for an answer.

“I was just a hopeful entrepreneur back then, driving through the gates of Southern Trace as a ‘caterer,’” recalls homeowner Don O’Byrne. “I saw this beautiful pink stucco home with a tile roof and said to myself, ‘One day I’ll live there.”

At the time, O’Byrne was living in a modest 1,100-square-foot home in Haughton, facing rejection after rejection from banks and investors who couldn’t see the potential in what would eventually become Don Juanz Baja Beach Tacos— including the very people he catered for that fateful night- Don eventually launched his restaurant in 2006. Fast forward to 2011, and O’Byrne found himself holding the keys to that very same Southern Trace villa—though “holding together” might be a more apt description of the property’s condition.

“I could literally see daylight through parts of the ceiling,” he recalls, shaking his head. Where others saw a money pit, O’Byrne—by then a successful restaurateur—saw his next great project. Taking on the role of general contractor, he and his wife Amy embarked on a renovation journey that would transform a troubled property into a showpiece of Old-World craftsmanship and modern luxury.

The Art of the Long Game

The home’s renaissance began where many of its problems originated—the roof. “We stripped it down to the bones,” O’Byrne explains, detailing a comprehensive rebuild that included new trusses, purlins, automatic roof vents, Ice & Watershield Underlayment, and wider flashings. Ever the perfectionist, he even sourced a mix of new and reclaimed roof tiles to achieve an authentically aged Mediterranean look. “The idea wasn’t just to fix it—it was to make it look like it had been here forever, doing exactly what it was supposed to do.”

That attention to detail extends throughout the property. Step into the foyer, and you’re transported to an Italian palazzo with Venetian plaster walls, granite-inlaid Italian porcelain tiles, and a stunning gold-leaf ceiling. “I applied each 4-inch square by hand,” O’Byrne notes casually, as if spending countless hours applying sheets of gold leaf was just another Tuesday. Oil paintings from his time living in Italy in the 1960s add authentic gravitas to the space.

Where Old Meets New

The great room exemplifies the O’Byrne’s talent for balancing preservation with innovation. Gone are the original faux French doors, replaced with expansive picture windows that frame a resort-worthy backyard scene—a sparkling pool, elegant fountain, and dramatically uplighted palm trees. A white marble fireplace anchors one end of the room, while a sumptuous sectional invites family gatherings at the other. “Amy’s the decorator, and I’m the builder or the person who gets it built,” O’Byrne says, crediting his wife with the home’s cohesive aesthetic. “Her job seems more fun than mine,” he adds with characteristic humor. Yet watching him discuss the intricacies of hand-applying Venetian plaster to 20-foot walls, it’s clear he finds joy in the craftsmanship. The couple has masterfully integrated modern conveniences without compromising the home’s Old-World charm. A Control4 system, installed in 2020, manages everything from lighting to security to audio throughout the property. The kitchen showcases Sub- Zero and professional-grade appliances, though the 2011 granite countertops they initially installed have become a source of gentle domestic debate. “My hardest job now is convincing Amy that perfectly good granite doesn’t need replacing with marble. It never grows old!” O’Byrne chuckles.

The Great Outdoors

The landscaping of the nearly one-acre property is where the O’Byrne’s vision truly shines. In 2015, Don tapped Chris Elberson at Somdal Associates to assist with the design of the outdoor kitchen and garage. The garage, far from a mere storage space, features epoxycoated floors and custom wood doors from California Ranch House Doors, creating a climate-controlled space that’s as suited for entertaining as it is for vehicles. It was meticulously designed to complement the main house, down to customstained roof tiles and handapplied ¾-inch thick stucco. “The idea was to make the new addition appear built in 1997 with the home”. The pool area—the O’Byrne’s most enjoyed feature—has been transformed into a resort-worthy retreat, complete with a state-of-the-art heater/chiller that extends the swimming season to eight months. “This year, we were swimming with our dogs one week before Thanksgiving,” Don notes proudly, “and enjoyed 86-degree water on July 4th.” The chiller unit is one of his favorite things about the home.

Uncovering History

The renovation process revealed some surprising insights into the home’s original 1997 construction. “Inside the chimney duct on the bottom floor, we found a whole power saw that had been sealed inside during the build-out,” O’Byrne reveals. “If there was a shortcut to be taken when this home was built, it was taken. But we’ve corrected everything.”

Today, the property stands as a testament to perseverance and attention to detail. The thick concrete stucco walls keep the interior comfortable year-round, while the Floridian-inspired landscaping, complete with palm trees, creates a resort-like atmosphere. Don still dreams of adding 20-foot Italian Cypress trees to complete his Mediterranean vision.

This Mediterranean sanctuary, surrounded by palm trees and the sound of flowing fountains, the O’Byrne’s have created more than just a home—they’ve crafted a testament to the power of vision and perseverance. While Amy favors the formal living room with its blue Venetian plaster walls and ceilings that Don finished by hand, Don’s preferred spot is the lower back porch, where he can take in views of the outdoor kitchen, a fireplace and pool surrounded by privacy walls. It’s a fitting favorite spot for a man who once stood outside these gates, dreaming of the day he’d call this place home.

“This house isn’t just our dream come true,” Don reflects. “It’s proof that with enough determination, you can build the life you’ve always imagined—even if you have to tear down a few ceilings to get there.”

That house was built in 1946, just after World War II, and held so many memories for my dad’s family. Among its many elegant features is a spacious and bright open kitchen/family room that creates the centerpiece of the house. Studded with gorgeous ceilings, large floor-to-ceiling windows, and tile floors, this kitchen becomes more than a place for meal preparation. Guests can be entertained in the family room as they appear through the numerous windows. Bianco Rhino is sourced from Namibia, Africa, and is such a beautiful addition to this dreamy white kitchen, offering a soft white veining that cannot be found on man-made surfaces. To help ‘elevate’ the island and range, the homeowner chose white oak for the oversized kitchen island and a modern white oak beam above a 48” double oven.µ Brass knobs offer a cleaner, more appropriate look to the classic kitchen—combining modern design together with traditional features. Built in 1922, this Glen Iris landmark home is considered a love letter to the Hollywood Regency. It has been home to only four families in its 102 years. No doubt it has gone through many updates and improvements in its long life. Most recently is the kitchen. Redesigned for entertaining with an updated butler’s pantry, the heartbeat of this home features a large island for seating and a bar area open to the family room. White Oak flooring was laid throughout the renovated rooms and adjoining great room. Quartzite was added to the butler’s pantry, kitchen, and bar area. State-of-the-art appliances will make any chef feel right at home. Years of celebrations and traditions have undoubtedly revolved around food preparation in this remarkable kitchen. Whether it was the annual baking of holiday cookies or enjoying family recipes passed down through generations, the simple act of gathering in this kitchen, in this way, cultivated many relationships, making it a cornerstone of familial and communal life.

A Midcentury Modern Home

Magic is made when personal style and midcentury spunk come together. Located in the heart of the Eastridge neighborhood, this beautifully remodeled home was designed with entertainment in mind. The outdoor room—with its vaulted ceiling—is full of distinctive pieces and was built to be an entertaining area. The longer you look, the more detail you’ll see. Layering design elements, unique accessories, and textures were key in creating dimension and depth, and it is outfitted with a mix of furniture styles. With the pandemic in the rearview mirror (fingers crossed), mainstream home designers are predicting that home design will take on an optimistic turn filled with vibrant colors, new furnishings, and sustainable DIY projects while maintaining a love for nature-inspired textures and accessories. Take a look at what’s trending now.

1.Go Bold in the Kitchen.

The phasing out of the all-white kitchen continues, and the penchant for color is visible whether coating cabinets in bold, unexpected hues or updating the color of the walls. Grab that paintbrush and get to it. Rich cool tones, such as peacock, royal blue, or emerald green, are colors that create a stunning contrast when combined with quartzite or marble options. Look no further than the Thaxton home in Pierremont (August 2023) for inspiration. You have two unique, distinct elements, but when combined, they make a grand statement—where high gloss and lacquer finishes further emphasize this jewel-like kitchen space.

2. Rethink Bathroom Walls and Floors.

If your bathroom floors or walls need a facelift in 2024, try going the retro and creative route with shapes such as squares, rectangles, hexagons, rhomboids, and, yes, even circles. These tile shapes have made appearances for hundreds of years, and though the shapes aren’t new, the variety of tile sizes available has given them a refresh. Opt for tiles with combos of white, gray, and black to nail that classic vintage aesthetic. Alternatively, try larger tiles paired with your cabinets, like the SB home feature from September 2023, boasting touches of metallics and iridescent glazes

3. Feature Pools, Outdoor Fireplaces, and Enhanced Patios.

The addition of water features such as inground pools, fountains, and small ponds is predicted to be one of the hottest trends in 2024. This is particularly true of features such as natural pools, which filter themselves using plants and can enhance your landscaping and your use of the yard.

Another element that’s showing up in outdoor living spaces is the outdoor fireplace. Firepits have long been a popular addition to outdoor spaces, but new outdoor fireplaces are a more permanent addition meant to make your patio feel much more like a living room than ever before. 4. Upcycle Housewares in a Glam Way.

Before you dispose of dishes, picture frames, and even large furniture items that have seen better days, think about ways to repurpose these pieces to give them some new life. A Perfectly Preserved Midcentury Modern Home in South Highland.

A stunning midcentury masterpiece that will captivate those who appreciate homes of this architectural significance—this modernized, three-bedroom home respects the past while modifying for the present and future.

Shreveport, LA. Midcentury modern is a term that’s thrown around a lot these days. But what is it really? Midcentury modern architecture is not simply anything that was designed and built in the middle of the 20th century, but, in fact, an architectural style with a defined set of principles and influences. To this day, the style continues to influence contemporary architecture in ways both big and small.

In the mid-1950s, local real estate developer Henry “Hank” Bronner began constructing a home in Shreveport’s South Highlands neighborhood. This new home was to be designed in the midcentury vernacular of the time, inspired by the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, and Charles Eames. The house was for Bronner’s first wife, Louise, and their daughters. It would be a true testament to the midcentury style with sustainable and innovative design, clean lines, minimal ornamentation, floor-to-ceiling windows, and an emphasis on nature. Sixty-four years later, Mrs. “Cissie” Bonner—Hank Bronner’s second wife—decided to put the home up for sale.

For Robert May, owner of Watertight Roofing and Construction, the midcentury style seems to be a product of specific design elements. “I think it’s really the materials, the open flowing spaces, and the real sunny feel to them that draws people to the architectural style to this day.” Upon learning that the Bronner home was for sale, his curiosity peaked. Initially, May just wanted a tour of the home before it sold. And, since he wasn’t officially in the market for a new home, he figured there wouldn’t be any harm in looking, right? May simply walked up to the front door, rang the doorbell, and introduced himself to Ms. Bronner.

Upon passing through the front door, May was amazed that most of the original elements of the home were still intact. He was immediately drawn to the floor-to-ceiling windows, the open floor plan, the built-in storage, the functionality, and the intentional connection to its natural surroundings. “Oh, yeah,” added May, referring to the manicured landscaping. “Seeing the backyard was a huge plus. Combine that with all the interior features; this was the house for me.” So, he bought it.

After purchasing the home, May knew from the start that any renovation would mean maintaining a careful balance between preservation and updates as he made decisions on what and how to move forward. Many details, as he would discover in the ensuing months, were hidden, disassembled, or reused elsewhere in the home. “Being in the construction business I knew where the line was and walked it successfully,” May says. “I wanted to approach everything I did very carefully.”

And carefully, he did. Aside from a few minor cosmetic changes, which mainly consisted of painting and electrical upgrades, May stayed true to the midcentury style.

Today, the 3-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home features the same footprint as when it was originally built—featuring the original open floorplan with large, custom floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe the space with natural light. These windows allow a ton of light to seep into the home—providing wonderful, breathtaking views of the beautifully landscaped backyard, patio, and saltwater pool area. The living area is anchored by an offset ledge stone fireplace set against a paneled wall and built-in bookshelves, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. A corner pole light provides some whimsy, as the room is decorated in era-appropriate accent pieces and furniture.

May handpicked many of the items that make up the home which gives it an awesome retro vibe. To say he is an avid George Rodrigue fan is an understatement. His works are seen in abundance throughout the home. “I must have more Rodrigue’s than anyone in Shreveport,” admits May. Appliances, countertops, and flooring were all carefully added to help “modernize” the home which, luckily, do not diminish the midcentury appeal. One of the things that hasn’t been updated is the original lighting that illuminates the home when natural light isn’t available.

Ranging in size, the three bedrooms all have ample closet space and generously sized windows. The master bedroom has a private patio right off the sitting area, with a unique master bath with his and her spaces. It’s like having two bathrooms in one! Likewise, there are closets everywhere. In the foyer, living room, and hallways. Walk-in closets are abundant. “I bet the whole house has over 600-squre-feet of closet space,” May admits.

The landscaping in the backyard is architecturally appealing and practical. According to May, he sees the exterior patio and yard as an extension of the living room, which looks out onto the patio. And just like the interior, the design has a good flow. The main design elements for the backyard are the saltwater pool, patio with fireplace, and multiple seating areas connecting through lavish, well-kept landscaping. “The pool is 10-feet-deep,” says May. “And, because of the depth, the water stays cool all summer long.”

For May, this midcentury architectural home remains timeless. And even though it has been decades since the home was originally built, he believes it is now a perfect blend of past and present, with room to grow in the future. “Surprisingly, the house had been really well maintained for the past sixty-four years,” May says. “It is certainly my forever home—with both old memories and new ones.”

Lauren and Brad also saw beauty through nature’s eyes, bringing in a palette inspired by outdoor views. The open floorplan easily allows light to flow through the tall windows, casting light and shadow against the tranquil neutral-colored walls. “We wanted to create a serene and calm open concept design with lots of natural light,” claims Lauren. “Using as many windows as possible helped us achieve this goal.”

Engineered hardwood floors in “French Oak” invite barefoot moments. “Flooring was an important part of the design process. We wanted light wood floors that would create a flow throughout that felt calm and cohesive. There are so many ‘light-colored’ wood floor colors to choose from we had a hard time choosing. It was even more beautiful in person after first seeing it installed.”

“This project was right up my alley,” says Lauren. “I love the peacefulness of a quiet palette and the easy elegance that comes from mixing classic and contemporary styles—curating a unique assemblage of textiles, art, and furnishings—both modern and antique. There were very few rules.”

Never one to sacrifice form for function, Lauren took advantage of her designer acumen to be on-trend but traditionally rooted. “Antiques play an important role in my life, and this house is no exception,” says Lauren. “My selections aren’t richly stained, ornately carved, or extravagantly gilded. They are refined and charming, packed with character and charisma, and, to me, that sums up our home’s style.”
