This year, the event will be held at the Shreveport Convention Center from November 30 through December 2. The perfect kick-off to the holiday shopping season, you’ll marvel at how 95,000 square feet is transformed into a winter wonderland for the occasion. The layout of the event is carefully planned to create a festive and inviting atmosphere. Vendors sell a wide variety of products, including jewelry, clothing, home decor, and gourmet food items. The quality of the products sold at Les Boutique de Noel is exceptional. Vendors are accepted through a juried process and are curated based on the quality and uniqueness of merchandise as well as on the style of booth decoration. With vendors from all over the south offering one-of-a-kind items that cannot be found elsewhere, the event has become a destination for shoppers looking for exclusive, high-quality gifts.

New this year is the Santa Land Kids area. The Grinch will visit on Friday for the kids, and Santa himself will arrive on Saturday with his best Elf and her “naughty or nice” meter. Children can have their picture made with Santa from 12:00 to 2:30 on Saturday. Along with Santa, the little ones will enjoy art projects and have book signings and readings by local children’s authors.
Shoppers will enjoy pop-up demonstrations and classes throughout the day. Style shows, dance performances, and singing will be provided for the lunch crowd, who will be feasting on catered dishes by local restaurants. Les Boutique de Noel will sweep you away to a winter wonderland without the actual snow.

The impact of Les Boutique de Noel on the community is significant. The event boosts the local economy, with many small businesses and vendors benefiting from the increased exposure and sales. Proceeds from the event support the Shreveport Opera Guild, the single largest contributor to the Shreveport Opera, with over five million dollars in donations during its existence. These contributions are used to mount the Shreveport Opera’s performances featuring professionally trained opera singers. Also supported is the Shreveport Opera Resident Artist Program. Every year, emerging professional singers and pianists are selected from across the country to receive training within a professional opera company. These young artists perform leading, supporting, comprimario, and ensemble roles in the Opera’s mainstage productions. They also are members of the SOX (Shreveport Opera Xpress) Program. SOX brings the Opera to communities and schools in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas. SOX features two children’s operas that expose (and often introduce) children to the art form. These outreach productions tackle themes such as diversity, acceptance, and bullying. Kids in over 100 schools benefit from not only the talent of this troupe but also the valuable moral lessons they teach. The SOX program also includes “Operatizers” (a concert of Opera Arias and Musical Theatre Pieces) at senior centers, community centers, and private functions. The Resident Artists receive housing, transportation to all company events, a weekly stipend, and a travel stipend.
Travius is a basketball-loving student; he enjoys playing basketball video games, as well as playing live basketball. His position is small forward, which puts him in the company of basketball greats Julius Erving, LeBron James, and Larry Bird. His plan is to continue playing basketball in high school and beyond; his immediate goal is attending Huntington High School and making their team. Travius is looking forward to high school and plans to play basketball for the NBA eventually.

A quiet, shy student, Travius is the older brother of several sisters, 2 of whom live in the home with him, and one brother, who lives with their father. Travius’ favorite food is spaghetti, and he likes to work math problems; he says that Math and Social Studies are his favorite subjects in school. He gave a “shout-out” to his ELA teacher, Ms. Pruitt, and his Math teacher, Ms. Murray. While he is thinking of using his math skills for banking or other financial activities, his one true love remains basketball. Travius comes alive when asked about basketball.

Travius says he is reading the Harry Potter series when asked about literary interests. The last movie he saw was the Barbie movie, due to the influence exerted by his younger sisters. He enjoys spending time with his grandmother and said that they play one-on-one basketball frequently. His grandmother often beats him in the games, in no small part because she played basketball herself.

When asked about middle school versus elementary school, Travius said that elementary school was much easier; middle school requires more work. Sometimes he will complete extra work or make-up work to help keep his grades good. ELA is the hardest for him, due to having to remember so much of what he reads. Science can also be difficult because he must remember equations for various chemicals in that class.

Travius doesn’t seem bothered by all the possible travails that accompany adolescence. He is an easygoing boy who knows what he must do to keep his grades up, does it, and moves on to the next thing. While he doesn’t currently have a girlfriend, he doesn’t seem worried about it. Basketball is his “center;” it keeps him grounded in his core, and is helping him be successful at school, much to the delight of his teachers. We should all be so fortunate!

UWNWLA’s mission is to fight for the health, education, financial stability, and essential needs of everyone in our community, and Toni has played a crucial role in our organization’s success. She served as the UWNWLA Workplace Campaign Ambassador for Progressive Bank, resulting in the company’s increased giving in 2023. She also helped secure funding and volunteers for our annual Day of Caring celebration. Most recently, Toni assisted UWNWLA in registering children attending Pre-K at Pine Grove Elementary for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that provides free, age-appropriate books to children to help them become kindergarten-ready. Toni Tyner’s unwavering commitment and exceptional fundraising skills have provided a solid foundation for our organization’s continued success. Her leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on our achievements, and we are honored to have the opportunity to highlight all she has done for us and our community.

It is a fact that at some point in everyone’s life, they will need to lean on another for help. United Way is dedicated to helping people from all walks and stages of life. Not only are they proactive with their services through their education efforts and boots-on-the-ground approach, but they are there when life is at its worst. In early adulthood, I personally benefited from United Way’s services. To echo the late poet, Theodore Roosevelt, “People may not remember what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.” The overwhelming gratitude for the support I received remains constant in me. This motivates and inspires me to support United Way and its mission to evoke this emotion in others.

My professional area of expertise is financial literacy. However, I find an overall personal purpose in helping others in any way possible. I know firsthand the value of financial literacy and how understanding money management, banking, and investing can be a catalyst to choosing a life that breaks away from generational poverty or relies upon passed-down generational wealth. A health enthusiast in my own right, I regard health as wealth. Spreading awareness throughout the community of the services provided by United Way, such as the Single Care Prescription Discount program, the Financial Empowerment Center, and a multitude of other services, allows me to fulfill my purpose of being a service to others.

I am dedicated to improving the quality of life of members of our community. I aspire to see more stable homeowners and financial literacy programs that result in financial stability for the underprivileged, a better quality of life because of proper healthcare access to food and services that support holistic, healthy living, and adequate education for children to create more opportunities for productive adulthood. My short-term goal is to donate as much free time as possible, sharing my professional talents and personal experiences to achieve long-term goals. Healthy living and financial stability can enhance the overall quality of life.

Culinary arts cover a wide range of skills, from making food look pretty to telling a story with a dish. Think of a chef as an artist using ingredients as their tools. However, another artistic avenue finds its inspiration in one specific ingredient—the humble egg.

Pysanky, the traditional Ukrainian art of decorating eggs, is an enchanting form of expression that elevates the egg into a canvas for intricate designs and deep symbolism. The practice of pysanky dates back centuries, with roots embedded in Ukrainian culture.

The process of creating pysanky is meticulous, involving the use of beeswax and a specialized tool called a ‘kistka.’ The artist applies layers of wax to the eggshell, with each layer covering the parts that should retain the egg’s original color. Between each wax application, the egg is dipped in dyes, progressing from light to dark shades. After the final dye bath, the wax is melted to reveal the intricate design, and the egg becomes a masterpiece.

In the vibrant realm of pysanky artistry, our very own Bossier City resident, Shelley Masog, owner of The Pysanky Nest, shines as a pysanky artist known for her exceptional talent and unwavering dedication to preserving this age-old tradition. In 2022, her commitment earned her top honors at the Louisiana State Fair, where she claimed the first place and grand champion titles for her captivating Christmas ornaments. Shelley’s interest in the art of pysanky was sparked by her uncle in Minnesota, a seasoned pysanky artist of many years.

“The fact that it’s done on real eggshells is fascinating,” said Masog. “In 2011, he showed me how to create my first pysanka, and I have been writing Pysanky ever since.”

The term ‘pysanky’ comes from the Ukrainian word ‘pysaty,’ which means ‘to write.’ This is fitting, as Pysanky artists, in essence, write on their eggs with wax and dyes, imbuing them with intricate patterns, symbols, and personal messages.

“Historically, these eggs were often created around Easter, and the eggs incorporated Christian symbolism, such as crosses. The eggs were kept whole, but now many artists empty them,” explained Masog.

“Today, artists often create pysanky throughout the year using modern and traditional designs.”

Recently, Shelley has begun exploring the fusion of the traditional art form with jewelry making. To create jewelry, the decorated eggshell is delicately cut and shaped into the desired pieces, which can include pendants, earrings, or other adornments.

“The challenging part has been learning to cut the pieces from the eggshell without damaging the design so much that it cannot be used,” shared Masog.

Precision is crucial to avoid damaging the intricate design. To preserve the vivid colors and the fragility of the eggshell, the finished jewelry pieces are often sealed with a protective coating like resin. This enhances their longevity and adds a subtle sheen to the final product.

“I also fill tiny eggshells, such as finch and parakeet eggs, with resin to make jewelry.”

Shelley Masog’s unique combination of Pysanky and jewelry-making serves as a captivating bridge between tradition and innovation. When asked about the message or emotions she hopes to convey through her art, Shelley passionately expresses, “I love creating Pysanky and sharing this art with others. I enjoy learning about other cultures, so I hope others enjoy learning about this unique art form.”

By blending the ancient with the contemporary, Shelley’s creations offer a vibrant, living connection to a rich artistic tradition and contribute to the local artistic community. You can find Shelley’s Pysanky art by visiting her artist shop on Etsy, located at www.etsy.com/shop/PysankyNest.

Investing is a common way for people to build wealth. But it can take many forms and involve different levels of risk. What makes sense will differ from person to person.

Why? Because everyone’s financial circumstances are different. What may be good advice for a 23-year-old just leaving college and entering the workforce may not be the best course of action for a 57-year-old looking to preserve or even catch up in retirement savings.

Some investors may be able to afford a little risk in their investment portfolio … others may want to avoid risk at all costs. In addition, some folks may be able to manage their own budget and planning, but others may need a financial professional to sort out their situation.

Many investing options.

Complicating the situation is the variety of investment opportunities available. Most people participate in the market through retirement plans provided by their employer, which typically offer the chance to direct funds into stock and bond investments. Beyond that, the advent of online brokerages and electronic trading has opened the door for many people to construct their own investment portfolios ranging from individual stocks and bonds to commodities and real estate.

And there are additional opportunities with private equity funds and online funding ventures like Kickstarter.

In addition, investment vehicles have become varied as well. There is a wide spectrum of ETFs and mutual funds available beyond the world of stocks and bonds. And more and more exotic mechanisms, like digital currency and derivative investments, are entering the market.

The investment world is broad and varied. But through it all, are some basic principles and stock market basics all investors should understand and keep in mind.

Basics of investing

Risk: All investments have risk. How much risk typically depends on the type of investment. Understanding the risks involved, both in investing and in specific investments, is essential before committing any money.

For example, bank certificates of deposit (CDs) and U.S. Treasury bonds are generally considered lower risk than stocks or shares in a venture fund. But CDs and bonds typically command lower rates of return, because they are less risky. The general rule is the higher the risk, the higher the potential rate of return. But rates of return outside of CDs and Treasury bonds — and particularly for investments tied to markets — are not guaranteed.

Nor is there such a thing as a safe investment. History is replete with examples of investments people thought were “safe” going down in value.

So why invest at all? Because it’s a way that has proven, over time, to build wealth. It’s also a way to counter inflation, which is the loss of value in savings because of general increases in prices and costs.

So, a good step for any investor, is to understand how much risk they are willing to accept.

Additionally, all investors should recognize that their risk profile may change over time and so they may want to periodically reevaluate their position.

Diversification: Here’s a common bit of advice: “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” The same advice applies to investment portfolios. If all your investments are in the same type of asset class, say stocks, and that investment area suffers a setback, a market correction for example, then your portfolio will suffer likewise. If your investments are spread out over different investment categories, say a mix of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, then the damage from a particular downturn will be limited.

For that reason, many investors divide their holdings among different types of investments. And some carry the strategy further, divvying up stock holdings between large companies and small companies, for example. Others still look to vehicles like insurance and annuities to vary their investment mix even more.

Asset allocation: How does one diversify? Typically, the choices you make will depend on your age and risk tolerance. Generally, when you’re older, you want to have less risk in your investments, since you will have less time to make up for a loss. As a result, older investors tend to want a greater proportion of bond holdings in their portfolio than younger investors, because bonds are considered less risky than stocks for the most part. On the other hand, younger investors may be willing to accept more portfolio risk in exchange for the possibility of higher returns, since they have a longer investment horizon to make up possible losses.

Dollar-Cost Averaging: Buying stocks and other investments at regular intervals in fixed dollar amounts is a strategy followed by many investors. This system reduces the average purchase price of the stocks in a portfolio, regardless of which direction the market is moving. That’s because as the prices of securities being purchased rise, fewer units are bought, and vice versa.

The practice of dollar-cost averaging doesn’t eliminate risk. But, by lowering the average purchase price, it does help prevent investors from overbuying shares in the face of a market retreat. However, it also means gains are limited in the face of a market spike.

“When stocks go down, people often get fearful and sell,” said the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority in a discussion of the practice. “Then, when the market goes back up, they might miss out on potential gains. On the flip side, when the stock market goes up, investors might be tempted to rush in. But they could end up buying just as stocks are about to drop. Dollar-cost averaging can help take the emotion out of investing. It compels you to continue investing the same (or roughly the same) amount regardless of the market’s fluctuations, potentially helping you avoid the temptation to time the market.”

Steady investment strategy

Some investors, especially those willing to commit time to market study and research, may elect to move into more complex and sophisticated strategies and systems. Indeed, there are people who decide to become professional investors.

Most people, however, have careers and make a living in other ways, and use investment to build wealth and prepare for retirement. And so, they regularly put their earnings in a well-diversified portfolio and reinvest any gains along the way.

Of course, the level of investment and financial goals can differ from individual to individual. Many people opt to consult a financial professional to set an investment plan. But for most people, regular and steady investing can help them win the race.
