Planning A Renovation? Plan For These Problems Too!

When you come up with renovation plans, the main idea is to make them go off without a hitch. You don’t want to end up with a big hole in your home, with sawdust and paint flakes all over the floor, and nothing else to show for it. You want a nice, refurbished, newly functional space to live in!

But you’re not going to get that unless you plan for a few renovation issues along the way. Remember, your budget isn’t just for the new things you want to buy for your home. You’ll also need to account for the hidden issues that may ruin your ideas and throw the entire work schedule off.

And with that in mind, here are the problems you’ll want to cover when you’re putting your renovation plans together.

The Work is Going to Take Longer

We’ve mentioned it already, but sometimes the work goes entirely off schedule and takes at least another week to get done. And that’s going to make your down-to-the-minute renovation schedule completely useless.

Whenever you take a free week to get a home project done, make sure there’s space for another week on top. They don’t have to be consecutive, but if they aren’t, you’re going to need to come up with a backup idea of how to make the worksite safe and livable in the meantime too.

More Extensive Repairs Are Required

It’s not just the time factor you have to account for. You may run into some structural problems that highlight just how big the cost of your renovation could be. And if you haven’t thought about this before now, you’re going to be stuck trying to scrimp and save while the house falls down around you.

Remember, there’s a million different systems at work within your home. If one of them goes down, you need to have some kind of emergency budget to complete the time sensitive portion of the work.

Pipes are old, leaky, and may even contain traces of lead? You might have to hire Copper and PEX Repipe Specialists to replace the entire plumbing system in your home. The furnace is on its last legs, and there’s no other central heating available? If you’re about to head into the winter season, this could freeze your house from the inside out.

You’re Running Low on Your Budget

The worst problem you could possibly run into when completing a home improvement. Your budget is running thin, and you’ve got a good chunk of work left. You might have even done everything according to plan thus far, and not wasted a single penny. But you’re still running low!

You’ve underestimated the cost of the work from the beginning. When creating a budget, you don’t want to work via minimum values. Find out the highest possible cost of materials and labor, and then budget as close to those as possible.

When you’ve got renovation plans, make sure you’re ready for them to go wrong!
