Likely Renovation Jobs For Your New (To You) Old Home!

Old homes are absolutely fantastic, they really do have charm and character to them that new builds dont. But they do come with their fair share of issues too, especially if you’re buying an old house that hasn’t been particularly well maintained. Lots of people tend to buy old houses after their last owners have passed away or perhaps gone into care homes, and in a lot of these circumstances the previous elderly owners haven’t always been able to keep on top of things when it comes to repairs. So when they’re sold, a lot can be lurking under the surface and this can definitely be problematic if you’re not prepared for it. It’s important to always have a full survey done so you know the costs and types of issues you’re up against, and then you can decide if you want to proceed with turning a lovely old house into something liveable again (or if you’re after less of a project!) If you do decide to go ahead, here are some things you can do to bring an old house up to modern standards.

Electrics, gas, plumbing

First things first, from a safety perspective you’ll more than likely need to have these things checked out when you move in. If your survey has shown things need replacing for safety reasons then have that done right away. Even if you dont need a full rewire and a new boiler, you might still need to upgrade what’s there to work with how you plan on using the house so get that in order first.

Windows

Old houses usually mean old windows. If they’re single glazed with rotten frames or have other issues then a complete replacement is your best bet. It will make your old house look nicer from the outside as you can choose a style that matches with the new rendering or siding if youve had that replaced (or with the original bricks if you’ve kept those). Not to mention it will save you money too and make the house more comfortable temperature wise.

Roof and gutters

Old homes often need work doing on the roof, it could be a case of replacing missing or cracked roof tiles as these can cause leaks and damage to the house underneath. Gutters can be full of plants and gunk and so having the roof checked and gutters cleaned at the same time is usually sensible. One thing that can really improve the kerb appeal of your home is to have the roof cleaned, lots of houses have never had this done and the tiles are under layers of dirt and moss. A roof cleaning company can literally bring the house back to life and it can be amazing to see what the house would have looked like when it was first built.
