Eight Top Tips For Managing Your Health

When it comes to your health and wellbeing, you need to be looking after it. You might think that you will never experience any issues, problems, or concerns. While this may be true while you are younger, the same can’t be said once you hit 30 and beyond. Taking care of your health needn’t be complicated, in fact, you can take it way back to basics if you want. If you aren’t too sure how to look after your health then check out the article below for some guidance and inspiration.

Get Enough Sleep

Part of looking after your health is ensuring you get enough sleep each night, failure to do this can result in you feeling exhausted and irritable. If you don’t want that then you should be aiming for around eight hours of sleep each night, with a minimum of six. If you are constantly waking up or being disturbed then you need to find out why. It may be that you have children waking you up, which can’t really be avoided. However, if it aches and pains then these can be addressed. It could also be that you are in need of a new mattress, especially if your current one is older than ten.

Drink More Water

As an adult you ideally need to be aiming to drink around two liters of water each day, this equates to around eight glasses. It might seem like a lot, especially if you are lining those eight glasses up. However, there are ways to manage this so you don’t even notice yourself drinking them. You could get yourself a sports bottle with a sucky lid or a straw, this makes it easier to take in water and you drink far more. If you don’t like the taste of water then you can also get small flavored pods to use. These are great and come in all sorts of flavors, some of them even contain added vitamins and nutrients.

Eat Right

Now, are you aiming to enjoy all of the basic food groups when it comes to your diet? If so, then these include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, dairy, fruits, and vegetables. They should make up a large chunk of your plate when you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However, the occasional junk food or processed meal is fine. Moderation is always key here. If you are struggling to eat the right foods or you don’t know how big your portions should be then you could always speak with a dietician or nutritionist. They will be able to point you in the right direction and could also help you create food plans that are easy to stick with.

Move Around

What else is important for your health and goes hand in hand with eating right? Exercise, of course. If you lead a busy life then this might be so far from the agenda, however, there is always time. Even if it is just five minutes a day, following a workout video online, that is much better than doing nothing. Adults should ideally aim for around 45 minutes of vigorous exercise each day. This could be a swim, a run, or even some HiiT workouts, as long as you are getting your heart rate up. If you aren’t keen on exercising in front of people then there are plenty of videos online, you can follow along to these but you need the motivation to stick with it.

Look Into Supplements

If you aren’t getting what you need from your diet then you might benefit from supplements. These are often pills or powders that you incorporate into your daily routine, they can also be multivitamins. Supplements provide you with anything and everything that you are lacking, which could be collagen or Vitamin D. Take a look at some of the best ones on the market and decide which one fits your budget best. You should also look into taking peptides as these do wonders for your health and wellbeing.

Your Skincare Routine

Have you been neglecting your skin lately? If so, then ask yourself why. This is the biggest organ of the human body so you need to be looking after it. Adopting a healthy skincare routine can take time, as you might not be sure what is good and what isn’t for your skin. One thing that is vital is SPF, you should be using this everyday. Apply it to your skin before you put on your makeup. There are plenty of tutorials online regarding make up routines and SPF. it is vital you prep your skin before you go to sleep each night. Take your make up off and rinse with a good quality cleanser. You should also find a night time moisturizer that you can apply. Remember, they aren’t all created equal so find one that works for your budget and your skin.

Meet Up With Friends

Socializing is an important part of your health and wellbeing journey. There may be times when you just want to sit at home and not do anything at all. However, this will only lead to further problems down the road and you don’t want to be dealing with those. Meeting up with friends can be incredibly good for you and put a much needed smile on that face. So, next time your friends message and ask you to go out with them, say yes.

Mental Health Matters

Finally, it isn’t just your physical health that you need to be taking care of. Your mental health matters too, and the two do go hand in hand. If one isn’t working properly then the other will struggle to keep up. If you are having issues with your mental health then it might be worth speaking to a counselor or therapist to see if they can help you overcome this hurdle.

So there you have it, we do hope you found the information in the article interesting and helpful. There are no right and wrong answers when it comes to your health as everyone is different. However, making small changes now can and will make a huge difference in the future.

Natural Ways To Boost Your Energy Levels

Hectic schedules, long hours, and a lack of sleep can impact your energy levels. All these problems are common, with most people working full-time and juggling other commitments. If you suffer from low energy levels, there are solutions. In this guide, we’ll discuss some effective, natural ways to feel more energized.

Get outside

Spending time outside can help you lower stress levels and feel more relaxed, but it can also be revitalizing. Fresh air can make you feel more alert and alive, especially if you’ve been indoors for a long time. If you have a desk job, for example, it’s an excellent idea to schedule breaks during the day and stretch your legs outdoors, or arrange walking meetings. This gives you a chance to move your body and enjoy a change of scenery.

Explore alternatives to your everyday coffee or tea

Many of us rely on a cup of tea or coffee to start the day with energy and enthusiasm. If you’re one of the millions of tea and coffee-drinkers looking to maintain high levels of energy throughout the day and prevent crashes, you may want to explore alternatives. Fruit teas, matcha, and green tea are popular, but you might have noticed that everyone is talking about mushroom coffee at the moment. Products like Neubrain mushroom coffee utilize the health benefits of eating mushrooms to improve focus and concentration and provide a natural energy hit without a crash. It’s beneficial to read product information and speak to a medical expert if you have any questions about trying new supplements or changing your diet.

Exercise more (at the right times)

If you’re tired or feeling lethargic, exercise may be the last thing on your mind, but it can be a powerful tonic. When you move your body, it releases endorphins, and the levels of serotonin and dopamine in your brain increase. Working out and playing sports can also be great fun, and it can boost your confidence. If you can summon up the motivation to go for a jog, do an exercise class or home workout, or even stroll around the block with the dog, you’ll feel better for it.

It’s important to exercise at the right time of day if you’re susceptible to sleep troubles. If you work out late at night, for example, this can stimulate you and make it difficult to sleep. Starting your morning with a Pilates session, a run, a bike ride, or a swim is an excellent way to get ready for the day and approach it with a positive mindset.

Do you ever feel like you’re always tired? Many people have low energy levels due to long working hours, busy schedules, and the demands of modern-day life. If you’re looking for ways to feel more energized, there are some fantastic natural solutions. Examples include spending more time outside, exploring alternatives to your everyday cup of tea or coffee, and exercising regularly, especially during the mornings and early afternoons. It’s important to seek medical advice if you have persistent fatigue or self-help techniques don’t have an impact.

Sometimes it can feel like maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an overwhelming challenge that doesn’t fit within the realities of daily life. It’s tough to hold down a full-time job, eat well, train for a marathon, make homemade green juice, spend quality time with your family, and meditate for an hour each day.

Of course, healthy living can incorporate all of these things, but it doesn’t have to be defined by grandiose displays of health and fitness. Here are 18 tips to live a healthier, happier lifestyle—all simple, easy things that can be seamlessly incorporated into your daily life:

1.

Self-Care is Essential. Chronic stress is detrimental to both your physical and mental health. Get to know your stress triggers (the things that cause stress for you, either quickly or in the long-term) as well as your stress releases (the things that can help calm you when you’re stressed) so you can proactively cope with stress and maintain healthy levels. To prevent burnout, start making time for self-care. From pedicures, yoga, natural ways to treat shingles and other illnesses, and spa treatments to using the best castor oil packs for bloating and digestion, working out, spending time outdoors and finding a new hobby, anyone can practice self-care in a variety of enjoyable ways.

2.

Cultivate a Positive Mindset. It’s true—mindset is everything! Cultivate a positive mindset by recognizing negative thought patterns and countering them with positive thoughts or affirmations.

3.

Get Plenty of Sleep. While some folks boast about getting by on 4-hours of sleep, the truth is—most of us are sleep-deprived. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. But in addition to quantity, quality of sleep matters too! Focus on getting quality sleep—like keeping your bedroom cool at night and avoiding blue light after dark. Being well-rested is one of the biggest components of being a happy person!

4.

Take the Stairs. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a simple way to get a little more physical activity in your daily life. It also strengthens and tones your legs and core while you’re at it!

5.

Drink More Water. Coffee’s great, too, but the benefits of water are many. Water is absolutely necessary and helps to aid digestion, enhance skin health and boost energy. In general, the average adult needs two-to-three liters a day.

If you have a female catheter, be sure to speak to your doctor about the optimal hydration routine. You want to get all the health benefits, but you also want to avoid overloading yourself at the same time.

6.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise. And not just a few times a week, but every day. Engaging in regular exercise will also help you feel more energetic, relaxed, and sharp during the day while you are working, which will inevitably influence your overall feelings about work itself. Aim to sweat in some way—whether that is via running, biking, dancing, hot yoga, or any other physical activity you enjoy.

7.

Engage in a Hobby You Truly Love. It’s easy to let work take over your life, but having defined boundaries between your professional and personal life is crucial. One way to keep your work/life balance in check is to find a hobby you’re passionate about and enjoy doing. Being able to “escape” into your hobby for a while will bring you pleasure, keep your thoughts away from any work-related stress, and engage your mind.

8.

Eat Real Food. Aim to eat real food that is made of whole food ingredients you would have in your own kitchen pantry, or that your grandmother would recognize. “Real food” includes unprocessed foods like an apple, a cucumber, soybeans or a steak, as well as foods loosely processed from one (or few) real-food ingredients, like butter, olive oil, yogurt, tofu, etc. In other words, aim for foods that could be reasonably made in your own kitchen and avoid foods that can only be made in a lab.

9.

Drink a Green Smoothie Daily. Green smoothies are the perfect way to get your greens in each day. Similar to the traditional fruit smoothie, but contain more green veggies and can include spinach, lettuce, kale, collard greens, parsley, dandelion greens, or watercress—pretty much any leafy green veggie your palate desires. Bananas, apples, pears, avocado, and mango are great companions and work well to enhance the overall flavor and texture.

10.

Get Plenty of Sunshine. Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for overall health, and sunlight is one of our best sources of it. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of sunlight each day—preferably in the afternoon and without sunscreen.

11.

Avoid Negative People in Your Life. A positive mentality is key to a healthy life. You don’t need negativity in your life. If you feel that a person or friend is negative, just let him or her go.

12.

Make Friends. Making a lasting friendship is not just a smart networking approach or strategy for status—friendship is intimately connected to both your physical and mental well-being. Friends keep you grounded, help put things in perspective, and help manage the problems that life throws your way.

13.

Meditate Daily. One of the easiest ways to live a healthier lifestyle is by meditating. Whether you spend time journaling, focusing on your present surroundings, or being mindful as you do deep breathing, meditating every day can help you de-stress and feel happier. Meditation is intended to purify your mind of thoughts that trigger your stress response—the reaction that keeps you in emotional and physical bondage.

14.

Develop Better Eating Habits. A simple hack for healthy eating (and portion control) is to make half your plate veggies at each meal.

People don’t realize how impactful a beautiful smile can be until the confidence to smile has been lost. A lack of confidence causes a domino effect of painful experiences for even the most upbeat individual. Dr. Luis M. Alvarado of LA Prosthetic Dentistry has given confidence back to people for years. He has practiced as a prosthodontist in New Orleans and Seattle and recently settled in SBC with his wife and family. Since February 2023, LA Prosthetic Dentistry has been located on Kayla Street in Shreveport. They offer state-of-the-art full-mouth rehabilitation services where all treatment plans are tailored to each patient.

When it comes to prosthodontics, LA Prosthetic Dentistry is in a class of its own in Northwest Louisiana. Dr. Alvarado completed a 3-year residency training in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the University of Connecticut and then obtained another 2-year residency training program in Prosthodontics at LSU. This degree in prosthodontics gives Dr. Alvarado the advantage of being an expert in both highly complex and highly esthetic cases. Dr. Alvarado explains, “We are the only full-time prosthodontics practice in a three-hour radius from Shreveport. We design all of our cases digitally in-house, and we have milling and 3-D printing capabilities to assure quality control.” Dr. Alvarado and the LA Prosthetic Dentistry staff believe that the sky is the limit for their practice. The practice employs five people, including one dental hygienist and four amazing assistants who perform various tasks from chairside assisting to administrative duties and digital dentistry. “Our goal is to work alongside the referring dentists to become an extension to them for the more complex cases,” says Dr. Alvarado. “We have expanded our services to implant placement and restoration to allow for more accessible treatment.”

The organization has diligently labored from day one to promote philanthropy and improve the quality of life in North Louisiana by serving as a permanent and growing resource of expertise and funds. CFNLA stewards over $180 million in assets used for the betterment of 14 Louisiana parishes. Over the years, they have granted over $120 million in grants to numerous nonprofits in North Louisiana. The organization’s seven board members and nine staff members consistently give their all, aiding nonprofits to reach their full potential for the parishes they serve. The board members, comprised of community members, oversee the organization’s funds, management, and policies. They ensure that donations are distributed most effectively to elevate each nonprofit it assists. These various nonprofits fall into the education, health, social services, youth, and environment categories. The online event is the largest day of giving in our area. During the event, nonprofits are part of a community-wide day of giving that raises millions of unrestricted dollars for North Louisiana nonprofits and brings community members together to celebrate these organizations’ work.

Most nonprofits are designed to advance the community in one particular area of interest. CFNLA is seen as a nonprofit that lends a helping hand to other nonprofits. They aim to bring people and resources together to solve problems and enhance the community. When donors donate funds to CFNLA, the funds are placed in an endowment account that continuously grows and earns interest. When a nonprofit reaches out to CFNLA for a helping hand, those funds are distributed from more than 200 various funds that support community causes, but the principle of the endowment remains intact to grow for future generations. CFNLA donors range from everyday individuals and families giving what they can to large corporations and organizations donating thousands. Whether they are individuals or large corporations, CFNLA collaborates with donors to see their vision for a better community and help bring that vision to life for a lasting legacy that donors and CFNLA can be proud of. Donors can give here and there as they are able to, or they can become members of CFNLA, giving on a continual basis. CFNLA members also have access to a number of rewards that members are able to take advantage of. Aside from helping with funds, CFNLA assists nonprofits with networking opportunities, public events, and workshops, offers a variety of scholarships for North Louisiana students, and even allows nonprofits to use their state-of-the-art Community Central Meeting Space. The Community Central Meeting Space is an incubator equipped with everything from Wi-Fi and ample work areas to a full kitchen. Any non-profit can contact CFNLA at info@cfnla.org or by calling 318-221-0582 about reserving time at this incubator to conduct business or host an event or workshop.

As they want to ensure their efforts are effective, they regularly collect data on various aspects of the community and make it available to community members. This collection of data is called Community Counts. Beginning in 2008, CFNLA began Community Counts, where the organization collects data in six categories: population, economics, human capital, health, social environment, and physical environment, and publishes its findings. The data collected is measured in ten comparative communities. These findings allow CFNLA, as well as those in North Louisiana, to see where the greatest needs are located. Near the end of 2023, CFNLA presented a $50,000 grant to the LSUS Institute for Nonprofit Administration and Research. The grant will be used to strengthen the organizational capacity of ten area nonprofits. These nonprofits were selected from a pool of CFNLA grantees. One CFNLA initiative that has had great success is the Spark Education Fund. In 2013, CFNLA partnered with Volunteers of America North Louisiana (VOA), Communities in Schools (CIS), and Caddo Parish Schools to help children in poverty achieve academic success. CIS is the nation’s most effective dropout prevention initiative. In 2014, VOA and Caddo Schools officially launched the CIS program in three area schools. The Caddo schools with the CIS program have two tiers of services. The first is school-wide services for all students, and the second focuses on intensive case management for students in need. Currently, CIS operates in 2,900 schools nationwide and assists 1.61 million students. Another area of CFNLA that has made a tremendous impact is the Women’s Philanthropy Network. Started in 2005, this group is made up of women in the community from all walks of life. Each year, their membership dues are used to make a high-impact donation to a local nonprofit. In 2023, the WPN recipient was Volunteers for Youth Justice. A $90,000 grant was presented to VYJ for The Harbor School-Based Center. This resource center, located in the Shreve City area of Shreveport, offers several community services aimed at meeting the needs of families in the area, such as a food bank and health care information services.

This online giving event empowers the entire community to get involved in causes they care about while building awareness and support for hardworking nonprofits. Give For Good provides a platform for all donors to transform our community for good. Each year, over 200 nonprofits participate in this interactive 24-hour giving challenge. This year’s Give For Good event falls on May 7th. Donors are able to donate early beginning April 23rd, but the big day for everyone is May 7th. Last year, Give For Good was able to raise $2.75 million. Those funds were received from over 8,000 gifts and were distributed to 209 deserving organizations. In addition to the $2.75 million raised, the CFNLA Lagniappe Fund accumulated $230,000 in funds, and over $20,000 in prizes were awarded to participating nonprofits. The Lagniappe Fund is a pool of donations that are equally divided among all participating Give For Good nonprofits. The Lagniappe Fund is established for those donors who do not have a favorite nonprofit they would like to donate to but would still like to be part of the day of giving.

Donors can look at the list of participating nonprofits and their profiles to see what kind of work they do in the community. Donors would then donate to as many nonprofits as they choose, giving however much their heart desires. Another way donors can raise money for their favorite nonprofit is by hosting a fundraising event. A personalized fundraising page is created, and all funds raised through the page during Give For Good go directly to their chosen organization. Registration for nonprofits began on January 2nd. The rules and regulations for nonprofits that would like to be part of Give for Good next year can be found on the CFNLA website at cfnla.org. Nonprofits or donors who have questions regarding Give For Good can email them to giveforgood@cfnla.org or by calling 318-221-0582.

No one can deny the deep connection we have with the sun. That feeling of warmth on our cheeks in early spring, or the “hot stone massage” beach sand does to our feet on a sunny day. We need the sun. Everyone has heard about the importance of the sun in our natural production of Vitamin D. We also know of the relationship with daylight and our circadian rhythm. But, our skin takes a beating from the ultra-violet (UV) and infra-red (IR) damage that occurs with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Let’s take a look at what a Facial Plastic Surgeon has to say on the issue of safely enjoying the sun. I have been in practice over 20 years and I treat patients with sun-damaged skin every day. I’ve developed several basic rules to help protect our skin from premature aging related to sun damage.

Rule 1—Avoid sun exposure when possible.

This could mean physically shading yourself with umbrellas, hats, UV blocking clothing, and sunscreens. Combine two or more of these methods to increase protection. Sanders stresses that UV/IR effects are cumulative over our lifetimes. Think about a cup such that once it is full, it will run over. This is how sun damage works and why we see the effects of early damage later in life. Those sunburns you had as a child are still with you, that damage is under the surface even today.

Rule 2—Know your sunscreen.

Not all sunscreens are created equal. There are two broad categories: chemical barriers and physical barriers. This is the single most important thing to know about your sunscreen. Chemical barrier sunscreens react with UV light and get “used up” in the process. The greasy or sticky feel may still be on the skin but it is not effectively blocking UV after about 90 minutes, so it must be reapplied to be effective. Reapply chemical barrier sunscreens every 60-90 minutes for the best protection while in the sun. Physical barrier sunscreens are different in that they do not react with UV but reflect it like a micro-mirror so that it never gets to the skin. Physical barriers do not have to be reapplied unless they come off with sweating or swimming for an extended period of time. The latest improvement in sunscreens is the ability to block infrared light as well. IR is the part of sunlight that gives it heat, but these rays can be aging as well.

Rule 3—Use the highest SPF available.

While it may be true that the benefit of any SPF over 50 is minimal, why not take advantage of this minimal help? There are sunscreens with SPF of even 100 now and there are no downsides to using a higher SPF except that these high SPF sunscreens are almost always chemical barriers so the re-application rule applies.

Rule 4—Post treat sun exposed skin.

It is important to wash off any sunscreen residues that remain and then treat whatever amount of damage you have acquired. I recommend using multi-blend antioxidants (AO) and human derived growth factors (GF) on a daily basis but especially after significant sun exposure. Think of your skin as really thirsty after a day in the sun and give it a big glass of rejuvenating AO and GF..

We all need the sun and with some good planning and diligence towards the steps listed above the aging and damaging effects of sun exposure can be minimized.

“For bodily exercise profits little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” — 1 Timothy 4:8

That’s because Christ Fit is not just a gym.

Weatherall has long been into physical fitness. Folks used to come to his garage to work out, but he also admits to partying and drinking back then, too.

Then it all changed.

“I got saved in 2006 after the military,” he said. “I came home from three deployments and was really broken. I gave my life to the Lord. I told the Lord the day of my salvation, ‘I am going to be completely committed to you. I don’t know what that looks like. I don’t know much about You. But if You just give me purpose, I’ll do whatever you want.’”

At that time, Weatherall continued to welcome people into his garage to work out. But that’s where the similarities stopped.

“We went from partying and drinking, then after I got saved, we started doing Bible devotions,” he said. “I was like, ‘Guys, this is going to be a little bit weird.’ They said, ‘Bill, this is weird, but you come here, and we like it. You let us work out for free.’ And people started coming.”

And people kept coming. In fact, Weatherall said so many people came that they outgrew the garage at his home. That’s when God came back to him about that commitment Weatherall made in 2006.

“Life was just so good,” he said. “We were doing well. (My wife) was a full-time nurse. I was back in the reserves as a drill sergeant, in oil and gas, back in school doing very good. Then, in 2011, God hit me up on that promise. He wanted me to leave everything and start a gym.”

Christ Fit Gym is open at 5:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. It offers a variety of free classes throughout the day. Each class begins with a devotion that lasts about 15 minutes. The gym also has an array of machines and free weights available for those who want to work out at their own pace.
“We just want people to come up here and get involved,” he said. “It’s my job to make sure this environment stays Christ-like. A lot of people who don’t go to church want to come here and work out. They sit through the devotions because they respect a free gym, and 100 percent of the time, they’re always asking me questions afterwards. It’s always a unique thing that they get genuine, authentic Christianity up here.”

And every bit of it is free. Christ Fit does not operate on membership dues. It is a donations-only operation.

“You can come here 1,000 times and never give a dime,” Weatherall said. “Pastors were saying, ‘Bill, this is not a good idea. You don’t have any funding.’ But when I went to sleep, God was driving me crazy. He was making my life miserable because He was telling me to go, and I was saying no.”

Weatherall said God made it impossible to do anything but commit to the vision.

“We’re gonna keep on doing this no matter what,” he said. “Until Jesus comes back or the money runs out, we’re going to fight tooth and nail to see that this place survives and continues to be a lighthouse in this community.”

Christ Fit Gym is a mission not just for Billy, but his entire family.

Billy’s wife, Julie Weatherall, was a labor and delivery nurse for 12 years before she left that job to join the business full time.

“I remember the day Billy called me about opening a gym, and how much we were going to charge,” she said. “Then I was at work one day, and he called me and was like, ‘This is going to sound crazy, but God has laid it on my heart that we need to do donations only.’ I just sat there for a second, thinking, ‘How’s that going to work? But OK, let’s roll with it.’

“We have ups and downs and all arounds, but all in all, it’s been a huge blessing. To see the growth from one room where you could fit 10 people to where we are at now, it’s really awesome.”

Julie started keeping the books for Christ Fit in her spare time while she continued working as a nurse. But as the business grew, Billy thought it would be a good idea to add a smoothie store to the gym five years ago.

“That sounds crazy,” she remembers saying. “I prayed about it and prayed about it, and I was like, ‘OK, I’ll just go part time. I’ll still keep my job, still keep my insurance. So I started kind of part time, and it was so much I ended up just quitting my nursing job.”

Billy’s sister, Jodi Johnston, recalls how she got involved in the early days.

“I remember when he told me, I said, ‘If the bank will give you a loan for $50,000 and you’ve been unemployed for a year, and she’s a full-time nurse, well, I guess it’s God’s plan.’” And the first bank he went to did give him that loan.

Johnston recalls one night in that first year when her brother called her, distressed by the fact that no one was donating to the gym and the rent was due. That’s when she threw out an idea.

“I’ve always been a huge garage sale person,” she said. “I told him, ‘Have a garage sale. People that know what you’re doing, and the kids that have come there, they love you. Nobody wants to see this fail.’”

Billy’s brother, Bernie, has been there from the beginning, helping put in the floors and set up the equipment. But the gym wasn’t making money in those earlier days, so Bernie worked in oil and gas for seven years — “a horrible lifestyle,” he said.

“I came back home, got my life right with the Lord, and started working here full time,” Bernie said. “This gym saved my life, 100 percent.”

Bernie works with the moving and recycling arms of the operation. Those operations, along with the thrift store, help keep the gym operating on a donation basis.

Even Billy’s mother, Janet Weatherall, plays a role in the operations.

“Ever since the gym was opened, Billy has always given me a place here at the gym” she said. “Billy has been so obedient. I look at his life, and God has just blessed him.”

Christ Fit’s growing portfolio of businesses and services provides more than just a place to work out. To many, it provides an opportunity.

“Christ Fit Gym is not just a gym,” Johnston said. “We have all the special needs students work here during the day. This whole facility offers second-chance employment. We strongly believe in that. We think, if somebody doesn’t give them a chance, why won’t they go back to their old ways? It’s our job to plant the seed. If you come here, it’s gonna get planted. And if you come here enough, it’s gonna get watered, too. That’s the goal of it.”

“It doesn’t matter your past,” Billy said. “We are willing to give anyone a chance. We all have pretty bad backgrounds. We’ve made some mistakes. We’ve lived life. I’ve lived life to the fullest for the world, and I’ve lived life to the fullest for the Lord. It’s not even comparable.”

While each family member has a specialty in the operation, they all pitch in anywhere they are needed. Billy and Julie both have helped on moving jobs, and Janet has been known to help with the packing.

“If we’re all not in it, I don’t want to do it,” Julie said. “This is such a beautiful thing we have here with our family.”

As the operations continue to grow, the family remains committed to God, to each other and to every person who walks through their doors.

To Julie, it’s about being the church to people who might not go to a church building.

For Bernie, the excitement is in seeing how God always shows up.

“I see God’s favor daily,” he said. “I see miracles weekly. It’s unbelievable. God’s favor is all over this. Truly blessed.”

And for Janet, it’s simply a labor of love.

“This gym is absolutely unconditional love,” she said. “People come as they are, and it’s always just been a warm, welcoming place. I’m just so proud of my children. I learn from them every day. They are my inspiration.”

For Billy, it all goes back to Christ Fit’s mission statement, found in 1 Timothy 4:18.

“Physical training is important, but it’s not the most important,” he said. “It’s knowing the Lord. When you know the Lord, it has eternal ramifications. It’s for here, and it’s for the future.”

Local organization helps families with children suffering with arthritis and the doctors who treat them.

Did you know children get arthritis?
Arthritis is still generally thought of as an older-person’s disease, but over 300,000 children suffer from arthritis in the United States. Arthritis in children is always painful, sometimes crippling, and occasionally fatal. Early diagnosis is critical. There are only 200 pediatric rheumatologists in the US, making it difficult for many children to see a specialist on an ongoing basis. It can be a long road to diagnosis, and many children have overlapping diseases. Children suffer from extreme physical and emotional pain. Many report feeling isolated because friends and family misunderstand this “unseen” chronic illness. There is an example of one child who was playing basketball and cello before his diagnosis, but now can’t even manage school but 4 hours a day. Medications can cost up to $200,000 year.

For 30 years, local non-profit Children and Arthritis, Inc., founded by Dr. Thomas Pressly, has addressed the difficulties faced by children suffering from rheumatic diseases and their families. The mission is to provide information and support to families of children who suffer from arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. Pressly, a Shreveport rheumatologist in private practice, also operates the clinic for rheumatic illnesses at Shriner Children’s Hospital in Shreveport.

Parents of children diagnosed with this chronic illness struggle with knowing what type of treatment is appropriate and worry about side effects. Treatments can be difficult because of coexisting conditions or contraindications of medications. Even administering medications can be an issue; many children become anxious at the anticipation of a shot – and one of the main medications causes burning at the injection site. At school, an IEP or 504 accommodation plan is usually needed.

The family unit can also be disrupted. Siblings often feel forgotten and act out. Examples include a sibling who was dealing with depression and stealing cars and another who attempted suicide. Financial implications surpass just the medication cost; parents struggle with missing work, and one mother had to give up her career to take care of her child. The divorce rate hovers at 75% for families dealing with a chronic illness.

Children and Arthritis provides a welcome opportunity to these families with an annual summer weekend program, Camp Jambalaya Jubilee, held at the serene campus of Centenary College. What makes this camp unique is that it does not serve just the child with the illness, but serves the entire family. While the children participate in camp activities, parents and guardians attend sessions with physicians and family therapists. Teens also have their own therapy sessions together.

Camp serves families with children (under 18) who suffer from rheumatic diseases in the southern region, primarily LA, TX, MS, AR. The families stay in dorm rooms on campus and all meals and activities are included. Camp fees are nominal, so families may attend regardless of financial situation, and transportation is provided in many cases to help families attend. Approximately 50% of attending families qualify for Medicaid. Camp Jambalaya Jubilee provides services to families that they may not be able to access or afford easily or elsewhere. Additional funding above these camp fees are required to cover the camp expenses and come from grants from local organizations as well as generous individual and corporate donors.

Many families return year after year, having closely bonded with other families in their same situation. They listen and console one another, mentor “new” families attending, and learn from one another. A new family to camp said, “Words cannot adequately express the positive impact this weekend has had on our family. It was truly powerful! Many thanks!”

The goal of the camp is to empower families through education, encouragement, and enjoyment, helping families alleviate the frustration of chronic illness.

Education: Camp Jambalaya Jubilee’s adult small group meetings provide families with access to top pediatric rheumatologists from around the country, dentists, orthopedic surgeons, ENTs, nephrologists, cardiologists, hand surgeons, ophthalmologists, nurses, family therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists. Parents learn about new research and medications, how to watch for signs and symptoms, and ways to work with the school system. Local organization TEAMS steps in here.

Encouragement: Camp Jambalaya Jubilee’s small group counseling sessions give families the opportunity to talk with family therapists and address underlying issues, such as marital strife, siblings having feelings of neglect, or fears regarding the illness. These sessions have proven invaluable to fostering connections between families and healing strained relationships. Dr. George Wolcott has been involved from the beginning and brings a team of therapists each year to work with the families.

Enjoyment: Camp Jambalaya Jubilee’s camp program for children includes a number of special needs accessible activities such as bowling, swimming, arcades, games, and arts and crafts. Because all children are able to participate in every activity, they experience a sense of normalcy, maybe for the first time. Parents report that children look forward to camp each year with great anticipation. Special family evening recreation is intended to facilitate relationship building between families. Activities include a Mardi Gras parade, an outdoor carnival, and an evening outing to places like the YMCA and Sci-Port.

Overall, families return to camp year after year to receive patient education, patient peer support, caregivers support and patient advocacy information—all critical needs within these families. They gain unprecedented access to doctors, surgeons, specialists, and therapists, all dedicated to helping them cope with the physical, emotional, and financial challenges of having a child or sibling with chronic illness.

At the 30th anniversary of camp in 2022, 20 former campers (over age 18) participated, and the families learned about how far the medicines and treatments have come over the years. Several of these camp alumni are wheelchair bound which isn’t the case for most newer patients due to the advancement in medical diagnosis and treatments. The former campers shared their stories of success and trials. Parents saw how their own children would be able to navigate adulthood with the illness.

The other mission of Children and Arthritis is to help with early diagnosis of the condition through continuing education to medical practitioners, especially pediatricians who are the first point of contact for these children. The organization has hosted the medical Cassidy Conference: Advances in Pediatric Rheumatology. At the most recent in 2022, Willis- Knighton Health System was the presenting sponsor, in partnership with the

Northwest Louisiana Pediatric Society, Pediatric Rheumatologists of the South (PROs), and Shriners Hospitals for Children-Shreveport, where the conference was held. The conference featured world-renowned faculty speakers. The conference was a chance for new and experienced pediatric rheumatologists and pediatricians to come together and share their knowledge of advances in infectious disease and pediatric rheumatology, allowing for new thought processes and innovative techniques.

The Cassidy Conference is named in memory of Dr. James T. Cassidy, an exceptional rheumatologist and professor who was considered “the father of pediatric rheumatology.” Cassidy was internationally recognized for his work in pediatric rheumatology and wrote the first textbook, “Textbook of Pediatric Rheumatology.”

Cassidy was an instructor and mentor to Pressly and was also instrumental in starting Camp Jambalaya Jubilee.

Pet ownership soared during the pandemic and some shelters across the country found themselves empty of pets for the first time in history. Many people sought out the companionship of a pet to help manage the loneliness and isolation brought on by lockdown and the pandemic. For many people (and we know who we are), pets are much more than just animals – they are beloved family members. Pet ownership can provide a deep, meaningful connection with a living creature, and this special bond between pet and owner has numerous psychological and physical benefits. Numerous studies have shown that owning a pet can have a positive impact on mental and physical health and can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. Here are just a few of the many ways our furry friends can improve the quality of our lives:

Reduction in stress and anxiety: Studies have shown that spending time with pets can help reduce stress and anxiety. The special bond you have with your pet can reduce feelings of anxiety and help cope with ailments that are exacerbated by stress. Pets provide a calming presence, and their unconditional love and affectionate behavior can help to lower levels of cortisol, a hormone that is associated with stress. Having that excited dog to greet you when you come home or having a warm fur baby to cuddle up with on the sofa can provide a sense of security and comfort and can help reduce feelings of anxiety. Tending to your pets feeding schedule, play time and grooming can provide a sense of routine, which also helps to alleviate anxiety.

Of course, in order to benefit from the calming influence, you do need to make sure your pets are relaxed and happy, so doing some research on things like why dogs are scared of fireworks and how to help them can be useful.

Improved mood and decreased depression: Pets can have a positive impact on our mood and mental state. Spending time with a pet can increase the production of endorphins, the brain’s feel-good chemicals, which can help to boost our mood and decrease feelings of depression. In addition, pets provide unconditional love and companionship, which can help to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. Many people became new pet owners during the pandemic for this very reason. For individuals prone to mental health struggles, pets can provide a distraction and disruption from distressing symptoms, such as ruminating negative thoughts. Using animals to promote mental wellness has been formally adopted by hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities. Animal-Assisted Therapy or Pet-Facilitated Therapy (PFT) has been shown to be a valuable adjunct to traditional medical and psychological treatment approaches. Dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and even llamas have been used in pet-assisted therapy and have shown to have beneficial events in a wide range of conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and autism. There is some evidence to suggest that the human-animal bond may reduce the risk of suicide, a health threat that disproportionately affects U.S. military veterans.

Increased socialization and sense of community: Pets can be a great way to meet new people and make friends. Whether it is taking a dog for a walk in the park or joining a cat-lovers group online, pets can provide opportunities for socialization and a sense of community. Dog parks are very friendly places, not just for the dogs, but for the humans as well. Meeting and chatting with fellow pet owners can help to combat loneliness and can be a great way to connect with others, especially for people who are shy, struggle with social anxiety or have a hard time making new friends. I have had some of the nicest conversations with strangers in the veterinarian’s waiting room. Most pet owners are happy to chat about their pet with others.

Enhanced sense of purpose and responsibility: Pets are family members. Like humans, they need love, healthcare, feeding schedules and attention. Caring for a pet can provide a sense of purpose and responsibility. Pets are totally dependent on their owners, and taking care of them can provide a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Pets can be a great way to introduce chores and teach responsibility in children. Pets also provide children with opportunities to learn about demonstrating nurture and affection. A University of Cambridge study, which examined pet ownership and children over a 10-year time span, found that children who had a strong relationship with their pets exhibited higher levels of pro-social behavior (e.g., sharing, helping) in comparison to their peers.

Increased physical activity: Many pets, such as dogs, require daily exercise. A Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Survey found that approximately 60% of dog walkers met the criteria for regular moderate to vigorous exercise, in comparison to only 45% of non-dog owners. Having a cat or a dog has been shown to be beneficial for your blood pressure. Being a dog owner is associated with lower diastolic and systolic blood pressure. The National Health and Nutrition Examination study looked at pet ownership over a 20-year time span. The study of over 2,400 cat owners concluded that there was a significantly lower relative risk of death due to cardiovascular diseases, including stroke and heart attack, compared to non-owners. Pets can help us get regular exercise, and this has been shown to have numerous physical and psychological benefits.

The rewards provided by pets are too many to list. If you’ve had a tough day or a personal crisis, the unconditional love and support a pet can provide can be priceless. Many people report that their pets have helped them get through difficult times.

While pet ownership clearly has enormous benefits, it is not without commitment and challenges. Before getting a pet, carefully consider your lifestyle. Do you stay late at work? Do you travel often? Pets require time, attention, and financial resources. Make sure you are at the right point in your life to be able to responsibly take on a pet. A good fit between you and your pet can enhance your life immensely.
