While running his San Francisco shop, The Enchanted Crystal, Beckman stumbled upon the Mardi Gras mask-making business. “When I was visiting Paris one year, someone told me about these amazing antique silk flowers,” says Beckman.

“I bought them all to showcase with some jewelry. A bride came into the store one day and said she wanted to wear them in her hair for her wedding. She asked if I could put them into a comb and add crystals and pearls. I said ‘sure.’’

After the bride’s request that day, Beckman started making bridal headpieces.

“I made thousands of oneof- a-kind headpieces,” says Beckman. “One day, one of my brides said she really wanted to walk down the aisle and surprise everyone by wearing a mask.”

“I made her an elaborate mask to go with her gown.

All his ideas for the elaborate mask and crown designs come from his travels.

He loves to travel. Always has.

Originally from Shreveport, Beckman ran the San Francisco shop for 42 years after a military assignment brought him to the West Coast.

“My military assignment was very unique,” says Beckman. “They sent me to San Francisco with a whole civilian group to review major core projects. It was also the beginning of the environmental revolution.”

Beckman went on to develop what became the National Environmental Policy Act.

“The law says any federal actions have to review the environmental, social, and economic impacts of a project,” says Beckman. “I developed the whole concept.

He also worked on the redesign of a Florida sanctuary.

When Beckman opened The Enchanted Crystal, he was the first guy in America to begin importing the world-renowned Swarovski crystals.

“I happened to meet the Belgium and Austrian representatives of Swarovski crystals,” says Beckman. “They had mentioned to me how they started making paperweights and decorative pieces.”

Beckman told them he was interested and became the inaugural American Swarovski crystal importer.

You can check out Dennis’s masks at his sister Debra’s shop, Enchanted Garden, on Line Avenue in Shreveport.

“People will come into my sister’s shop all the time and tell her, ‘I’ve been to your brother’s shop,” says Beckman.

Creativity and talent run deep in the Beckman household. Dennis’ son, Stefan Beckman, is a renowned designer of sets, fashion shows, and exhibitions.

In the 6th grade, Haley was accepted into the talented arts program at school, which confirmed that she was pretty good at this art thing. She was excited that the types of projects the students were doing were so outside the box and weird and different, “it just sort of made me fall in love with art even more.” One of her TAP teachers, James King, was one of her favorites – always motivational and encouraging. Not a man to mince words, but Haley valued his input and opinions.

She has always been drawn to portrait work and has spent countless hours honing her skills in oil and acrylic. Today, she is naturally focused on the digital arts. It’s basically painting, but it’s all on an iPad. Haley will not incorporate AI in her work. “I find the artistic process deeply rewarding, and the joy comes from creating something with my own hands and imagination. Where’s the fun in that? It takes away the experience and vulnerability of putting it together myself.”

It bothers me that Santa sees me when I’m sleeping and knows when I’m awake.

Does he see me in the shower? Does he know when I have gas? Ifhe does and
I do, will that make him go away?

I guess it is a small price to pay, though, this constant surveillance, as long as the presents keep rolling in. It’s a Yuletide hazard. Like fruitcake.

Christmas commercialization does not come without its downside. For every plus, there is a minus. It’s almost like real life!

Consider that in sports they tell you to “keep your eye on the ball.” They coach you not to “drop the ball.”

Yet at the same time, we’re supposed to “have a ball.”

Hmmm … The holiday season is especially pressurized, ball-wise. Opportunities for disaster lurk in the form of festive balls nearly everywhere you turn. Lurkers. Lurking. Doing what lurkers do.

I hate lurking holiday disaster. But, in a fallen world with a lot of round things, it’s inevitable. We’ve got to be “on the ball!”

You’ve got your ball that involves dancing and dip and parties. Christmas Balls. Galas. Will I dress appropriately? Get caught in Yuletide chit-chat? (“I don’t mind ordinary conversation, but I hate chit-chat.” – Bernard P. Fife)

Will you have an olive stuck in your teeth? Ask the host when the baby is due, even though she’s not pregnant?

It happens.

You’ve got your holiday bowl games or ball games, and the potential for slips here is obvious. Drop the ball, lose the bowl. Balls. It all comes back to balls.

There are ornamental balls to drop when you trim the tree. One of those breaks and it’s like breaking a light bulb. They haven’t invented something harder to swee pup than broken light bulbs or broken Christmas balls.

There’s the bell ball that hangs on your door and drives you crazy when the festive tingling wears off, which is quickly. There’s the jelly and creme cheese ball that lures the unsuspecting in like mosquito bulbs lure moths.Zap!

And there’s the most beloved Christmas ball of all, the cheese ball, which I eat until I get my bloat on. Who thought to put cheese into a ball and sprinkle nuts on it? How much time did THAT guy have on his hands that day? Regardless, God bless him. Yet there are hazards even in the good things, so my cheese ball holiday limit is two. (“No officer, I had just a couple of cheese balls is all. I was at a party!”)

Shopping is another holiday hazard, though it’s not so bad if you enjoy human bumper cars. I try to avoid mixing it up with a few thousand people whenever I can. But at this time of year, I’ll cave. “Silver bells” and “city sidewalks busy sidewalks dressed in holiday style” and “peace on earth” and “buy one get one” and all like that. It’s fun to mix it up. People watch. Spread the love.

It’s much more fun than driving. Driving? During the holidays? Just because that person has a wreath tied above his bumper doesn’t mean he won’t pick you off in the parking lot.

There is the hazard of
light hanging. Lights are hazardous enough, but when you go to hanging them, you are asking to get “lit up.” Those old limber days were magical, but I have hung off my last house eve.

Hey, Santa knows the Christmas pathway can be dicey. But most woe comes through pilot error. So take it easy. Relax. You’re supposed to have a ball, not break one.

“Christmas in the Sky isn’t just a party,” Atchison proclaims, her voice carrying the gravel of someone who has spent years rallying troops of volunteers and sweet-talking sponsors. “It’s a love letter to the arts, written in neon and sequins.”

This year on December 14th, Louisiana Downs will metamorphose into a playground that would make even the most jaded Vegas veteran do a double take.

At the helm of this creative juggernaut is Sandi Kallenberg—Chairman of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC). According to Atchison, “Sandi created the first gala in 1982 and has been the visionary for each Christmas in the Sky gala since then.” Alongside her, Sandi’s daughter-inlaw, Heidi Kallenberg, serves as the Chairman of Christmas in the Sky (SKY).

Elizabeth Kennedy and Ro White serve as Co-Chairs, forming a triumvirate of leadership that keeps this massive undertaking on track. “It’s like conducting an orchestra,” Atchison explains. “Every section needs to be in perfect harmony for the magic to happen, and these ladies do a magnificent job! I am merely the Chief Implementor!”

The Management Team—the unsung heroes of the fundraising efforts— work tirelessly behind the scenes. Caroline Marston-Brazzel chairs the Sponsorships Committee, with Kelsey Kiper as her right hand. “Securing sponsorships is an art form in itself.
For the oenophiles, Mark McKay and Rick Simpson oversee the Wine Auction, ensuring that the libations are as exquisite as the event itself. Margaret Green, heads the Collectibles Auction, bringing a touch of nostalgia and rarity to the bidding frenzy. Henry Price, President of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, provides crucial leadership and support to the entire team.

Since its inception, Christmas in the Sky has been the lifeblood of SRAC’s free community arts programs— pumping a staggering $20 million into the local economy. “We’re not just throwing a party,” Atchison insists, her eyes blazing with the fervor of a tenured veteran who has decades of experience. “We’re building a legacy. Every kid who picks up a paintbrush because of our programs, every mural that brightens a forgotten corner of the city—that’s the real jackpot.”

For Atchison, this hasn’t been “just a job” for the past 42 years—it’s been a calling. “The magic of Christmas in the Sky is that it’s a blank canvas for creativity. We give our artists a theme and then let their imaginations run wild. The results are always beyond our wildest dreams.”

Speaking of artists, the Production Team is where the rubber meets the road—or in this case, where the glitter meets the dance floor. Led by veteran Sky Design Chair Linda B. Goldsberry and Co-Chair Donna Poimboeuf, this team is responsible for transforming Louisiana Downs into a Vegas wonderland. “Linda will make a cardboard box look like the Bellagio, when given half a chance,” Atchison confides with a grin.

The culinary experience is just as carefully orchestrated. Food Director Chef Ryan Gillespie is curating a menu that would make any Vegas connoisseur jealous. Chef Ryan has selected a 5-star lineup of area celebrity chefs and is assisted by SKY Event Manager Exzavia Mitchel to bring the flavors of the Strip to SKY from high-end cuisine to comfort food favorites, every bite is designed to transport the guests to Sin City with “sin”sationally delicious offerings. Let us not forget the entertainment, which rivals a Vegas showroom, featuring the COZMOPOLITANZ band from Jackson, Mississippi, DJ Hot Boy Yoshi, breakdancers, singers, dancers from Northwestern State University, and a cadre of performers from Spinner Entertainment.

All in all, there are over 500 designers and volunteers helping pull this off. The Krewe of Elders, a key volunteer group for Christmas in the Sky, has even adopted the event as their major “community give back.” They work every Wednesday (starting in July) to help with the SKY’s sets and props. But beneath the glitz and glamour lies a deeper purpose. The event funds arts education, public art installations, and supports local artists. For instance, ArtBreak, a festival showcasing student art, receives significant funding from the gala’s proceeds. Atchison’s eyes light up as she describes the recently installed Bakowski Bridge of Lights, where students learn to create light shows that illuminate the Texas Street Bridge. “You should see these kids,” she confesses, her voice softening with pride. “They’re coding, they’re storytelling, they’re lighting up the sky. And it all starts here, with one ‘phantasmagorical’ night in December.”

The commitment to the art’s community is evident in every aspect of the event. Local restaurants and mixologists collaborate on themed menus that would make any Vegas sommelier jealous. Area musicians and performers spend months perfecting acts that will keep the party going until the wee hours. Even the silent auction items— always a highlight of the night— showcase the best of local artisans alongside luxury experiences and coveted memorabilia.

As our conversation winds down, Atchison reflects on her impending retirement. In May 2024, she stepped down as the Executive Director of SRAC to focus all her energy on this year’s Christmas in the Sky. Current Executive Director of SRAC, Rebecca Bonnevier, a woman with twenty-four years of experience in “big name entertainment” will completely take over the reins of SRAC, which includes all future planning for Christmas in the Sky, on December 30, 2024. “Rebecca’s gonna knock ‘em dead,” Atchison says with a mix of pride and nostalgia. “But this last Sky—it’s bittersweet. What a way to go out, though … surrounded by 2,500 of my closest friends, all dressed to the nines and ready to dance the night away.”

As we prepare to leave, Atchison pauses. “You know, people ask me why I do this. Why put in all this work for one night? But it’s not about the one night. It’s about the next day and the day after that. It’s about a kid seeing their first musical performance, and an artist selling their first piece. It’s about making sure that in Shreveport, the sky’s always the limit.”

With that, she’s gone, swept out into the Shreveport morning, leaving behind the faint scent of ambition and creativity. In just a few weeks, she’ll preside over a spectacle that would make Sinatra himself tip his hat. But for now, she’s off to rally her troops— over 500 volunteers—to transform a racetrack into a wonderland, and to prove that sometimes, the house doesn’t always win- –sometimes, the whole community does.

One thing is abundantly clear—at this year’s Christmas in the Sky, Shreveport is going all in on the arts. And with Pam Atchison at the helm one last time, it’s a sure bet that this event will be the jackpot this city has been waiting for. What happens at Christmas in the Sky stays at Christmas in the Sky. Unless, of course, you’re talking about the memories, the inspiration, and the lasting impact on Shreveport’s vibrant arts scene.

Conceived in 1892 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker is based on the libretto by Alexandre Dumas père, titled The Tale of the Nutcracker, which is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

Each year the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet presents this heartwarming story in a ballet extravaganza full of celebration and holiday sparkle – the perfect holiday family event.

This year’s production comes to us from an international and local ensemble that will grace the Strand Theatre stage on November 19th. The 32nd annual North American tour showcases a fusion of talent from esteemed ballet capitals worldwide, converging on one stage to spread the overarching message of the holidays– peace.

Headlined by principal dancers hailing from renowned opera houses in Ukraine and joined by a troupe of 40 exceptional artists representing Japan, Italy, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Poland, and beyond, the 2024 tour unveils newly reimagined scenes crafted by acclaimed Polish choreographer Viktor Davydiuk. Seamlessly blending classical ballet with avant-garde circus techniques, Davydiuk’s vision breaks new ground in ballet-theatrical presentation.

What age do you typically start children?

“We usually start kids in our program at about 4 for girls and 5 for boys. I wish somebody had started me at that age because it’s great to be able to develop so much technique at an early age. Some of our kids at age 12 are playing Mozart concertos.”

How important to you is music education?

“I think it’s crucial. In addition to children learning to express emotion through music, neuroscience research shows that studying music raises your IQ and expands the brain. While many of our Art & Culture Laura Crawford By Diane VanHoozer SBMAG.NET | SEP 2024 39 children become professional musicians later, that’s not our goal. In a recent study, medical schools took 60% of music majors and 40% of biochemistry majors. If children hear beautiful music from a young age and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline, and endurance. They will become more aware and appreciative of all that is artistic in life. They get beautiful hearts.”

What is the Suzuki method, and how is it different from other methods of teaching music?

“It’s patterned after the way you learn to speak a language. You learned to speak from listening to your parents’ words. Dr. Suzuki thought if you do the same thing with music, and if children hear the music that they’re going to learn to play from an early age, then it’s like the native language. We want them to focus on the correct violin position and be able to learn pieces quickly by ear.”

So rather than tell the student that you’re not suited for this, we would tend to tell the parent if you could practice every day and don’t skip a day, then you’re going to notice an amazing difference. I don’t think we’ve ever told somebody you can’t do this. Our goal is to have them all enjoy music for life. And even though I have 4 sons who all went through the program, only one is really playing now. My oldest was on the board of the New World Symphony in Miami, and my second one is on the Shreveport Symphony board. My third one is the vice-president of The Strand Board, and my youngest is in New York as a professional cellist. So, they all love music, and all musicians need an appreciative audience!”

When all is said and done, what will you cherish most about your life and your influence?

“In addition to my faith in God, I cherish most the love and support of my husband, Ed Crawford, and our four sons, because I couldn’t do any of this without their help. They’ve been so supportive of my love for beautiful music.” If you are interested in learning more about the Centenary Suzuki School, go to www. centenarysuzuki.com to apply for your child to be on the waiting list.

The Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) was brought in to discuss ideas. In March 2024, the mayor called for artists to give their own unique perspectives.

There were three water towers selected for this project. The St. Vincent Elevated Storage Tank was built in 1946µand is adjacent to I-49 near the Pierremont Road. Hollywood Ave. Exit 203, adjacent to the Caddo Heights Park. The West Shreveport Elevated Storage Tank was built in 1979µand is adjacent to I-20, west of US 80/LA 526 Industrial Loop Exit 8, next to Wonder Oasis Waterpark. The Linwood Elevated Storage Tank was built in 1994 and is adjacent to I-49, south of Bert Kouns Industrial Loop Exit 199 near Flournoy Lucas Rd.

The project will include structural repairs, painting and coating the tanks’ exterior and interior, electrical upgrades, disinfection system upgrades, and site restoration. The total duration of the efforts will be approximately three years, and the estimated cost is $7 million. The specific cost of the artwork is to be determined.

There were two artists selected for the highly anticipated project. The finalists were selected in May 2024 by a panel including the Mayor, First Lady, SRAC representatives, and the Director and Deputy Director of Shreveport’s Water and Sewer Department. Final selections were made on July 11, 2024.

The rounded top of a water tower resting on linear supports reminds me of a floral bouquet. My designs, ‘Celebrating All’ and ‘City on the Red,’ are straightforward: Three towers, three flowers. Shreveport deserves a statement piece, and a striking bouquet of flowers will convey a message of ‘welcome’ and ‘love’ for and from the city. The rich history, the culture, the natural and man-made beauty—what wonderful childhood memories I have! Although there is a lot to love about the city, it is the neighborhoods full of beautiful old homes that I adore the most. As a child, I studied and drew my favorites while imagining what they must be like inside. Whenever I visit, my brother always drives me around so that I may continue to gaze in awe of them. I have no doubt that being surrounded by such grand structures inspired me to study interior design and architecture in college. Participating in this competition is my way of saying ‘thank you’ to a city that gave me so much. My design, ‘The Rose Tower,’ is inspired by Shreveport’s natural beauty, featuring the rose, the southern magnolia, and the Louisiana iris. A striking bouquet of flowers rising above the neighborhoods will undoubtedly convey a message of ‘welcome’ and ‘love’ for and from the city.”

That walk would take him on a journey that would deepen his love of this art form, where he would ultimately find a new love for sharing his talents with others through teaching.

Logan’s interest in theatre didn’t just come out of the blue. He credits his early performance experiences to Randy Edwards at First Baptist Church. Edwards produced choir shows that incorporated sermon-style performance pieces. “That’s really where I got some very early and valuable acting experience, being up there myself in front of everyone. We traveled the country with that choir,” Logan says. He recalled one tour stop at a prison. When he took the stage for his “sermon,” he got a reaction from his audience. It turned into more of a call-and-response moment. A give-and-take that happens with a live audience. “It’s that moment where you meet them, and they meet you, and there’s that exchange that happens, I got to experience in that setting – different setting, obviously. I’m doing something that’s working. I’m doing something that has some meaning to it. These people are with me. It’s touching them. Here. (pointing to chest) It’s touching them. It’s having an impact. I think that’s what they talk about when they say that bug that you get. You know? It’s just that energy from an audience.”

That was kind of a breakthrough performance in my mind just because it was more of a character role. Lonely Planet stands out. That was just me and Patric McWilliams. It was a 2 person show. Even at that stage, I was still getting this complete master class in acting from my acting partner. It was the show that really taught me what Patric and Buseick, and others had told me all along. If you are just present and listening, your attention is on your acting partner; they’re going to give you your performance.”

Fast forward to graduation and a big move to the West Coast to naturally pursue a film acting career. “Being all of 23 years old, I just thought that was the direction I wanted to go. I love theater and had so much fun doing it, but I really wanted to get into film and television and film in particular,” says Logan.

He enrolled in grad school at Cal State University, Fullerton, and started teaching as an adjunct there to earn income while auditioning for films. For the fall semester, he had 365 students in one class. That’s extreme, coming from a small campus like Centenary to such a large population of Fine Arts students.

He was instrumental in developing the Centenary Theatre Program’s (CTP) curriculum, designed for four years of progressive learning. Graduates of the program are “prepared for a successful transition to graduate school or professional work.”

Logan and colleagues John Gayle, Don Hooper, and Alan Berry used their downtime during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop a strategic plan for the future of CTP. They modeled it after the college’s strategic plan of growing enrollment, recruiting, and retaining students. The result? The incoming class this past fall was the largest they’ve seen in quite a while. This fall’s class is shaping up nicely, with thirteen students already committed. Once enrollment increases, the department can “put in for another tenure track.” The short-term goal is to work with the music department to develop a musical theatre minor and to bring dance back. The long-term goal is to build a new performing arts building in the field adjacent to Marjorie Lyons Playhouse.

All it takes is money, right? This is just a suggestion, but if a person wants to help fund the performing arts program at Centenary, they can earmark their donation to ensure it goes towards the goal of Logan’s dream theatre. “I’d like to see us actually get to the point where we had probably somewhere in that 60 major range.

Would Logan rather be performing in New York as a professional actor? (Because he absolutely could – he’s that talented.) “…along the way, I discovered that I really do like teaching. There’s nothing like it. You get to watch these young, emerging theater artists do what they love to do. If you’re open to it, the joy that it actually gives you is immeasurable. We meet them where they are, and they just make these leaps, and it’s like, wow!”

It’s true what they say. The rewards of teaching theatre go beyond the classroom when you can stand back and watch a student blossom and grow. When you give them the opportunity to become a successful adult on whatever path they choose to take, actor or not, you have done your job well.

As audiences continue to be captivated by the art of acting and the allure of the theatre, the world of performance will continue to thrive and inspire generations to come. It’s comforting to know that we have professionals like Logan Sledge in our community. He is committed to nurturing and teaching up-and-comers so that live theatre remains a thriving source of entertainment that continues to enrich our lives in countless ways.

Carnegie Hall beckons another talented Shreveporter. And this one has a resume longer than Line Avenue and the talent to back it up.

John-Henry Crawford was born into a family with a strong musical background. He was exposed to music from a young age and began playing the cello at age 5 in the Centenary Suzuki School. His musical education and training have been extensive, beginning with his acceptance into the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 15 where he honed his skills and developed his unique style. He went on to complete a Master of Music at The Juilliard School and an Artist Diploma at the Manhattan School of Music. He has given concerts in 25 states as well as Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Ger- many, Mexico, and Switzerland.

Crawford won First Prize in the IX International Carolos Prieto Competition, was named Young Artist of the Year by the Classical Recording Foundation, and has played concerts at the Louvre in Paris, the Volkswagen Factory in Dresden, the Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia, and at the Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago. His dedication to his craft has earned him numerous accolades, including first prize winner of the Greenfield Competition where he made his solo debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Crawford has also performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras in Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, Texas, California, Tennessee, and Louisiana and has soloed with the Shreveport Symphony on four occasions. Crawford’s performances have received critical acclaim, with reviewers praising his technical skill, musicality, and emotional depth. Crawford commands a strong Instagram presence, having attracted tens of thousands of viewers to his project #The1000dayJourney, where for 3 years he filmed artistic cinematic videos daily from his practice and performances for over 50,000 followers (@cellocrawford) to give a glimpse into the working process of a musician.

His recordings and collaborations with other musicians have also garnered attention and accolades. His albums on Orchid Classics have accrued over 3 million streams. Corazón: The Music of Latin America (Editor’s choice in Gramophone Magazine), Dialogo, and his most recent release, Voice of Rachmaninoff all appeared on the Top 10 Classical Billboard chart.

Crawford performs on a rare European cello that is almost 200 years old, which was smuggled out of Austria by his grandfather before World War II. The instrument has a rich history and is a symbol of his grandfather’s experience as a Jewish physician living in Europe during a tumultuous time.

Crawford’s passion for his instrument and his talent as a cellist have earned him recognition as one of the most promising young musicians in the classical music world today. He credits his success to the inspiration and guidance of his mentors and peers, who have helped shape his musical life and career. Crawford’s dedication to excellence and innovation is evident in his ongoing commitment to musical education as he seeks new growth and development opportunities. Whether through collaborations with other musicians, performances in new venues, or ongoing study and practice, John-Henry Crawford is sure to continue making waves in the world of classical music.

He made his debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on October 3, 2023, alongside pianist Victor Santiago Asunción, cementing his place as a rising star in the music industry.

We asked John-Henry to document his incredible experience of that evening, from walking onto the stage to the final note he played, with his hometown fans. Here is his story:

As the old adage goes, ask a New Yorker how to get to Carnegie Hall, and they might tell you something like “Go down Seventh Avenue until you hit 57th,” but ask a musician, and they are more likely to say, “Practice, practice, practice. Ever since I was a teenager, I had heard about Carnegie Hall and envisioned this kind of magical space where the world’s best performers made music, but I never imagined myself having the opportunity to do the same until more recent years.

My experience performing at Carnegie came about through the newly established American Recital Debut Award, which enables a young artist to debut in a concert hall of international renown and provides 3 years of concert management and artistic guidance. The appearance at Carnegie, however, was not the first stop in this journey. Over the past month, pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion and I performed the program nearly half a dozen times before finally performing in Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. This program was made up of works by primarily American composers such as Gershwin and Barber, but the second half featured a sonata by Rachmaninoff, who incidentally lived much of his life in America. Our first stop was Evanston, Illinois–where Victor is based– to rehearse and prepare all the music performances. We then performed in downtown Chicago for the Dame Myra Hess series, followed by several performances in the Chicago area for various libraries, retirement homes, and historic mansions before traveling to Memphis, Tennessee, for a chamber music series. Each performance allowed us to fine-tune the music and really get it in our bones so that the Carnegie performance would be smooth sailing. Additionally, Victor and I had recorded a full album of Rachmaninoff’s music titled Voice of Rachmaninoff on the London label Orchid Classics, which was released this past summer, so much of our preparation had been done months prior. As the big day approached, there were many things to do in addition to practicing: publicity, sending email invitations, printing programs, dry cleaning, instrument adjustments, bow re-hairs, studying what information about the composers I might share with the audience, and more. All these small but necessary things add up to provide a special experience for listeners– similar to how a restaurant must not only focus on the food but also the presentation and service.

While I always aim to do my best at every performance, certain occasions merit extra focus and preparation. This was definitely one of those concerts. The days and weeks leading up to an important performance like the one at Carnegie can imbue a feeling of tunnel vision, with the light at the end being the performance and no thought of what happens afterward. This feeling is familiar for musicians, as any competition or performance of significance can cause such a mindset. I become very routine-oriented in this lead-up, practicing my pieces in the same order, eating the same meals daily, and even going on walks with the same route. When pressures are high, the familiarity of repetition is comforting and allows me to focus on the important stuff, like making music to the highest level possible.

When the day finally arrives, Victor and I head over to the hall for a rehearsal session to run through the program, and while I have an idea of what to expect, I am struck by the beauty of the hall the second I walk in. Even hearing piano sounds from backstage, the sound is like that of a studio recording, and the closer I get to the stage door, the more it sparkles. Setting foot onto the stage fills me with awe and admiration for the acoustical and visual marvel of Weill Recital Hall. While I had heard many beautiful performances from the audience’s perspective, never had I stood on the stage. From the first note, I smile
as I hear the sound bounce back to me. There is an immediacy of sound and a shininess that one hears, thanks to the size and proportion of the hall but also the materials and design of the corners and curved ceilings. The gold-trimmed molding, crystal chandeliers, and blue satin draperies make it stunningly beautiful. A magnificent hall is not just for the listener but also enjoyable for the musician and inspires one to play to greater heights. The more time we spend going through the repertoire, the more we listen and learn from the hall, the way certain notes linger and other notes fade. After a thorough rehearsal, we break until the concert and rest up for a night of music-making.

The hour approaches, and I review some last-minute tough spots. My pre-concert routine varies but always includes some kind of sweet snack for a bump in energy. The 5-minute warning rings, and I rosin up my bow and tune the cello. Performing is as much a psychological feat as it is a physical one. Taking a few minutes to breathe deeply and have some quiet time really helps to clear my head and gets me focused on what is about to happen. I focus on the spirit of the music and how enjoyable I can make it for the audience. The stage door opens, and I see a sea of bodies all clapping as we make our way toward center stage. We bow, sit down, take a deep breath, and once the hall is silent, we begin. The first piece by Foss–Capriccio–is a kind of anthem to his new home of America after immigrating from Nazi-controlled Germany in 1937. A positive, upbeat, rhythmically driven work, his Capriccio embodies the optimism many feel when coming to this country to start a new life. Foss’s story hits close to home for me and my family because just a year after he left Nazi Germany, my grand- father, Dr. Robert Popper, fled Nazi-controlled Austria just seven weeks before Kristallnacht. The cello I play is one of several instruments he smuggled out of Austria into Switzerland for safekeeping. As I play, I think of my grandfather taking a long journey around Europe on trains and ships before later recovering them and traveling to the US to start a new life. The following piece is a Carnegie Hall premiere and a tribute to the victims of the attacks on 9/11, 2001, titled Seventh Avenue Kaddish. This solo cello piece by American composer David Sanford imagines a street musician near Ground Zero playing as buildings collapse and debris blinds. The music reflects the chaos of that moment and ends with a psalm-like lament. I am very honored to have the composer present at the premiere, and after a long silence, the audience applauds, and Mr. Sanford stands up in recognition of his work.

From the first note until the last, I feel as though I am immersed in a dream come true, especially in “Dreaming” by Amy Beach. The notes echo back to me with a golden sonority. Each piece becomes more comfortable as I become friends with the hall and the audience. In the heavenly melodies of Rachmaninoff through the stormy sections, it is as though I am one with the cello in a heroic effort to express Rachmaninoff’s voice and passion. As the recital goes on, I can slowly pick out some familiar faces in the crowd, and it feels like somewhat of a reunion. Many former classmates, fellow cellists, and family members are present, as well as mentors and teachers from the past. Seeing their faces and hearing their cheers in between pieces fills my heart with emotion and gratitude. While I didn’t learn this until after the concert, my first-ever cello teacher (from age five), Kristina Vaska-Haas, surprised me by making the trip from Potsdam, New York, to come to hear the concert.

To my surprise, after the last note of the Rachmaninoff Sonata, the audience jumps to their feet, one by one at first, and then all together. A young girl who has taken cello lessons with me runs to the edge of the stage with a huge bouquet of blue hydrangeas. It is an enormous honor to make music in such a wondrous space with so many important people from my life, past and present and gives me a newfound appreciation for what it really takes to get to Carnegie Hall. Hard work, of course, helps, but I’m grateful to God and the community of friends, teachers, family, and supporters who helped pave the way and nurture my music because the truth is, you can’t get to Carnegie Hall on your own. You need people, people to encourage you, people to teach you, and people to inspire you to be better.

Good films do not have an expiration date. Being relatively new in terms of storytelling, movies are a unique medium that creates experiences for audiences in all walks of life. The birth of as we know them today can be traced back about a century ago with the technology to synchronize sound and moving images. With more and more films being released every year on every screen, finding new stories to enjoy has never been easier. However, as with most mediums, with variety comes the novelty of ‘new’. This has given some the idea that the newest is always the best option and that unless a film is exceptionally good, movies have an expiration date. I do not believe this to be the case. Allow me to introduce to you a movie that was released 65 years ago that is one of my personal favorites: The Five Pennies (1959).

Produced by Paramount Pictures, The Five Pennies (1959) is a musical that is loosely based on a true story. It was directed by Melville Shavelson, and stars Danny Kaye, Barbra Bel Geddes, and Louis Armstrong. Kaye plays Red Nichols, a small-town jazz musician who moves to New York City to try to make it big. He eventually succeeds and forms a band that has some of the greats in it like Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. However, when his daughter contracts polio he gives it all up to take care of his family. It’s a story that involves integrity, sacrifice, and when is it important to do what you love versus to be with the ones you love. If you like jazz, history, or old-fashioned family values being carefully discussed in your stories, you might like this movie.

If you are not a fan of musicals, I still highly recommend this movie. It is not simply a musical but a diegetic musical. Because it is about a composer and musician, every singing or main musical scene is purposely sung by characters who know they are singing. They don’t break out into song because their emotions get too big, and they barely dance if at all. When Nichols puts his daughter to sleep, he sings her a lullaby. When Nichols and his wife are in a hospital waiting room, they are too emotional to sing, but they recite lyrics to a hymn because they are trying to focus on hope.

The film’s title comes from the real-life band that Red Nichols led in the late 1920’s, but the recurring theme of the movie is a lullaby that is an original song called The Five Pennines. It appears multiple times in the movie, but it also appears with two other stacking melodies that are also lullabies. At a few points in the film, there are a few moments with full counterbalance duets. An example is when Louis Armstrong is singing “Goodnight, Sleep Tight” in a nightclub scene, then Danny Kaye starts singing “Lullaby in Ragtime”, then Susan Gordon, who was about eight at the time, joins in and sings “The Five Pennies”. All three songs stack beautifully on top of each other yet are as wholesome as individual songs.

The movie has some heavy scenes to it, but I watch it whenever I’m in the mood to be cheered up. Danny Kaye’s signature humor keeps the darkness of childhood illness and daily struggles of life to a light level. Perfect for movie night when you just want to watch something beautiful. You can rent this movie on Amazon Prime, YouTube, or Apple TV, for less than five dollars. You can also stream the soundtrack on Spotify or YouTube.
