“Light up the Night”
The Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) announced the installation of “THE FLAME,” A Public Artwork, atop the Kallenberg Artist Tower at the Central ARTSTATION. “THE FLAME” is a metal, 20’ tall, LED Lit, sculpture created by artists Bruce Allen and Jim Hayes. “THE FLAME” was officially lit at a public celebration, Friday, September 25, at 7:00 pm.
Fireball candies and Fireball Cinnamon Whisky cocktails were provided to toast (!) the lighting of “THE FLAME.” Wired & Sassy Jewelry designed a remarkable jewelry line with charms resembling the flame and wrap-around bracelets the color of fire — red and orange.
“THE FLAME” installation signals the completion of the transition of the Central Fire Station and its adjacent Hose Tower from the downtown “headquarters” for the Shreveport Fire Department to the Central ARTSTATION, headquarters for the Shreveport Regional Arts Council and home for the Northwest Louisiana Arts community, and the Kallenberg Artist Tower (an apartment for a visiting artist).
“THE FLAME” serves as both a beacon welcoming people into the newly developing Shreveport Common – a 9-block UNcommon, arts inspired, cultural community located in the western niche of Downtown, connecting the HUD Choice Neighborhoods of Ledbetter Heights and Allendale. “THE FLAME” is also a tribute to the former purpose of the Central ARTSTATION and the Kallenberg Artist Tower as the historic Central Fire Station. Finally, “THE FLAME” signals the memory of the tragic fire, set by an arsonist, which burned SRAC’s office and community Arts rehearsal space to the ground. The fire ultimately led to a “new day” for Arts Growth and inspired the Citizens, City of Shreveport, Parish of Caddo, State of Louisiana, and a bevy of generous “First Responders” led by the Anderson and Kallenberg families, to donate generously to the historically accurate restoration of the 1922 Central Fire Station.
“THE FLAME” is funded through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the City of Shreveport, the Kallenberg Family and the Downtown Shreveport Development Corporation.
