WHY THE GROOM STANDS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRIDE?

This tradition originates way back when men carried swords and the groom needed to keep his right arm free (assuming he was right-handed!) to be able to draw his sword to protect his bride. This means that the bride traditionally walks down the aisle on the left-hand side to be greeted by the groom on her right.

WHY THE BRIDESMAIDS WEAR MATCHING BRIDESMAID DRESSES?

Identical bridesmaid dresses may be a little passé these days but in Roman times, matching outfits meant good luck and were a common wedding tradition. Back then, people believed evil spirits would attend the wedding in an attempt to curse the bride and groom. To confuse the spirits, bridesmaids acted as decoys and dressed identically to the bride. The idea was that the spirits would be unsure which was the bride, which would lead them to leave her alone and allow the couple to wed.

WHY THE BRIDE TOSSES THE BOUQUET?

This tradition—first recorded in England in the 1700s but likely started earlier—also comes from the idea that it was lucky to have a piece of the bride’s clothing. In recent years, many couples partaking in Christian wedding ceremonies in America have included the practice of foot washing in the wedding ceremony. Inspired by the Bible passage in John 13:1–17 where Jesus washes his disciples’ feet, this act is meant to symbolize sacrificial love and devotion.

In moderation obviously, but from the moment you get the invitation to be the best man, to the moment the bride walks down the aisle, you are the groom’s go-to for anything from administrative issues to managing any pre-wedding jitters. No counseling is necessary, rather a simple ‘if you’re worried about anything, feel free to give me a call’. Though don’t just be a ‘yes’ man, don’t be afraid to offer up actual advice. Things like, “No, you can’t have an LSU theme for your wedding” and “Yes, you should get her something to open on your wedding morning” usually fit the bill.

Plan the bachelor party.

Let’s get this straight. Volunteer to plan his bachelor party, not yours. While the idea of a wild, unrestricted night of debauchery may sound like the perfect plan to you—it’s important to ask the groom what he wants. Not all bachelor parties have to fit the Hollywood stereotype. Maybe, instead of going to a strip club, he’d rather bond with his wedding party at the fishing camp over a few cases of beer. Ultimately, the party should be a celebration of your friend’s last stretch of bachelorhood. So, he should be allowed to enjoy it the way he wants.

Once you’ve decided on a theme, start planning the details—such as managing the budget, scouting venues, and delegating tasks to other groomsmen. 

Lead the Groomsmen.

A successful groom’s party is one that ensures the wedding runs smoothly with no hiccups. It’s not an army exercise, but just requires a bit of authority, and someone to decide who’s doing what. Unfortunately, the things that are not done, are the ones that get noticed. Call a team talk at the groomsman’s lunch to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Add a Personal Touch: Including your pets in engagement photos and engagement announcements can make the big day that much more personal and special. However, the difficult part will be keeping your pet from stealing the limelight. Many pets are used to posing for the camera, but make sure that the indoor or outdoor setting for the photo shoot is safe for you and your pet. 

Determine Your Pet’s Role: Before the big day, decide what role your pet will play. Is your pet going to play a large role in the wedding, such as best canine or best feline? Or maybe they’re going to be the ring bearer or walk the bride down the aisle. Dress them to impress and make sure their attire is comfortable and fits correctly. Have their collar or leash match the colors of your wedding. Maybe a simple color-coordinated satin bow tie or dazzling tux for your furry friend will add the right touch.

Check with the Venue: Always check with the wedding venue beforehand to ensure that pets are allowed on the property. Also, don’t forget to have some treats and water available, and take your pet to the venue before the ceremony to familiarize them with the surroundings. While you are there, take a minute to determine a quick exit in case they get upset, too excited during the wedding, or require an emergency potty break.

Be Prepared for the Unexpected: Tell your photographer that you want to include your pet in some of the wedding photos. This allows the photographer to plan photo ideas involving your pet and also allows them to prepare for unpredictable pet behavior. Even with well-behaved pets, there’s always a chance that they’ll misbehave or become stressed during the day.
