I was like, I’m gonna be an artist one day,” Haley recalls. Parental support and encouragement are so very important to a little one.

In the 6th grade, Haley was accepted into the talented arts program at school, which confirmed that she was pretty good at this art thing. She was excited that the types of projects the students were doing were so outside the box and weird and different, “it just sort of made me fall in love with art even more.” One of her TAP teachers, James King, was one of her favorites – always motivational and encouraging. Not a man to mince words, but Haley valued his input and opinions.

Throughout her educational career, Haley learned to work with numerous art mediums. She has always been drawn to portrait work and has spent countless hours honing her skills in oil and acrylic. Today, she is naturally focused on the digital arts. It’s basically painting, but it’s all on an iPad. Haley will not incorporate AI in her work. “I find the artistic process deeply rewarding, and the joy comes from creating something with my own hands and imagination. While I wouldn’t call AI a bad thing, using it (for me) feels a bit like opening a jigsaw puzzle only to discover that all the pieces have already been assembled. Where’s the fun in that? It takes away the experience and vulnerability of putting it together myself.”

She doesn’t need to. Besides, she prefers everything she produces to be handcrafted. She loves the process of creating everything from the ground up.

Established to honor the dedication and contributions of women who excel in their professional and personal endeavors, the awards not only celebrate individual accomplishments but also promote the importance of women’s leadership and empowerment. The historical roots of the Athena Awards can be traced back to the Athena International organization established in 1982.

As a member of the senior leadership at the medical school, Dr. Thomas engages with women at all levels of healthcare service. From mentoring medical students and serving as a fourth-year women’s advisor to writing residency recommendation letters, she has developed close professional relationships with the students. She has also served as a preceptor for Nurse Practitioner students who need clinical hours in pediatrics. These students shadow her in her private clinic as well as on the wards as they learn how to care for pediatric patients.

Dr. Thomas’ pursuit of medicine as a career began at home. “Having no physicians in my family, my parents encouraged me to be limitless in my pursuit of academic achievement. Along with academic excellence, I trained in classical ballet for almost 15 years. The rigors of dance taught me that time, dedication, and perfect practice are essential tools to being successful in any field.”

Balancing the hours of dance training and performing, along with a difficult academic load, made her thrive. She found herself drawn to the challenges of Science and Math. Those two subjects opened her eyes to the possibility of becoming a physician trailblazer, someone who can make an impactful difference in the greater community. “In the spirit of excellence, I sought out a college that would challenge me in both my studies and in my views of the world. Growing up in Shreveport, Louisiana, I always knew that there was so much more in the world to see. As the child of educators, my parents instilled in me a thirst for knowledge. I have always known that education is the means by which the world and its endless possibilities would open to me.”

Dr. Thomas was introduced to the National Area Health Education Center (AHEC)Association (NAO) as a fourth-year medical student completing my Family Medicine clerkship with one of the state’s AHEC community preceptors. She has served as the Program Director of LSU Health Shreveport’s AHEC office since 2013..

Or tuning in to one of those reality “contest” programs like Top Chef, Chef’s Table, or Good Eats and thinking, “I could do that…easy!” If you have, you’re not alone. Probably millions of wanna-be chefs and really great cooks have taken the bold step into the world of restaurant ownership without thinking it through. Before you get in line and find yourself in the next TV version of Hell’s Kitchen, you might want to listen to someone who has been pretty successful at running an eating establishment and has lived to tell the tale.

Owning a restaurant wasn’t at the top of the list of career choices for Don O’Byrne. In fact, “It wasn’t even on the list after leaving Los Angeles and catering to that capricious crowd,” Don said. Don left Shreveport mid-college not knowing what he wanted to do with his life. He worked various jobs in restaurants, five-star hotels, and in sales in Los Angeles, Newport Beach, Atlanta, and Dallas before he decided to return to Louisiana and finish his degree in Political Science. In 2002, after experiencing corporate “layoffs” one too many times, Don began laying the groundwork for opening a restaurant that would feature authentic coastal Baja cuisine. While working odd jobs to fill in the gap, he looked for investors, a location, and a bank that would help him get his dream off the ground. It was after multiple denials by banks and investors that Don finally secured an SBA loan from a small local bank and with everything he had in his savings, he poured it into Don Juanz. He eventually filed and secured a registered US trademark for his creation.

As with anything worth doing, it took hard work, lots of mistakes, and numerous bumps in the road but finally, Don Juanz was opened in Bossier City. It was the first fast-casual restaurant in Bossier City, and it took a while to train his guests on the menu and the concept. Don is proud to say that 85% of the original menu items are still being served today. “Every year we keep doing the same thing and we just keep getting better at it,” He says.

In 2016, Don opened a second location in Shreveport and is currently finalizing a third location in Tyler, Texas. He and his wife, Amy, and their son, Bailey (who will be handling the Tyler Don Juanz) are the perfect examples of working smart and with purpose to achieve success. Don is quick to say that in the restaurant business, you get something different every day. “It’s like opening a Pandora’s Box,” he said. “You can start the day with an agenda and as soon as you walk through the door, you get a new agenda handed to you.”

It’s a fact that operating a restaurant is one of the toughest businesses to be in. According to the National Restaurant Association, about 60% of restaurants fail in their first year, and 80% fail within the first five years. But television and movies that use a restaurant as a backdrop make it look so easy, right? Behind the scenes are high operational costs, an inventory that can and will spoil (leading to waste), and there’s always a struggle with maintaining and managing a workforce. Then there are the strict food safety and hygiene standards and strict regulations that have to be followed. On top of that, finding the right supplies and suppliers of key ingredients, depending on what food you’re serving. Items like hickory BBQ can be a nightmare to get right, so finding a supplier will be essential. to mention, a competitive market filled with customers who have high expectations and cameras on their phones with apps linked to review sites.

Still want to open a restaurant? If so, then take a couple of pages from Don O’Byrne’s playbook.

First, Don suggests you heed the warning of Warren Buffet, “Never invest in a business you cannot understand.” Next, be prepared to drive the car you built. In other words, you should have the ability to do everything that is done under your roof because one day, you will have to do it. How long can you go without getting paid? Cash flowing an owner’s salary often gets put on hold until all debt and expenses are paid and sometimes it can be a long time before that happens. Know who your demographic is. Don’t count anyone you know as part of this demographic. Look for economic indicators to ensure there’s enough of your demographic to support your efforts without a competing restaurant closing to do so. Changing customers’ palettes takes time.

You shouldn’t rely on anyone but yourself to be with you long-term until they’ve worked with you for at least five years. Build a strong team that wants to work with you. Be their role model by showing a willingness to step in to help them do their job and achieve success. You can’t do this if you’re only throwing money into it and hoping it’ll pay off. Learn the culture of your employees, otherwise, you could end up working in somebody else’s business and learning their culture. Don has been lucky to have quite a few long-term employees, which is rare in this industry.

“Watch your flock. If you can’t count sheep, you surely won’t be able to count your inventory twice a day to remain profitable in this business”, said Don. Your operational setup should start in a good location, which can significantly impact a restaurant’s success. It should also be immaculately clean and comfortable so that your guests will want to return again and again. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Stick to a menu that you know and do it well. Advertise where you think your demographic grazes.

Lastly, Don warns that owning a restaurant is not for the faint of heart. It’s a huge sacrifice and a test of your physical prowess. Undertaking a restaurant launch can be hard on personal relationships because you will be putting in long hours and time away from family. It can be scandalous. In the first month of opening his Shreveport location, Don and Don Juanz was a target of social media libel filled with obscene and insidious comments that were directed at injuring the business’s reputation. The “ghost writer” even attempted to libel Don’s family which led Don to seek legal assistance from a detective and an attorney. “We learned that the “ghost writer” used nine different online IP addresses that were tracked to a certain geographical area that led us to who we think the “ghost writer “was. Then it stopped abruptly,” said Don. You must be willing to persevere and overcome catastrophes such as this and unforeseen events like COVID-19 or the stock market collapse in 2008. “We’ve overcome so much adversity just to do business here that I thank God I’m still here”, said Don. Covid set Don Juanz’s expansion plans into Texas back by four years, but with perseverance, Don has managed to expand his restaurant brand at a time when many others are shuttering their doors.

Are there benefits to owning a restaurant? Absolutely. You are your own boss. You can pride yourself on your product and your ability to boost the local economy by providing jobs that, in turn, deepens your involvement in your community. There is also the potential for a pretty good financial gain if you work smart and are willing to learn and adapt as you go.

To successfully navigate this transitional period, one must consider essential strategies such as preparing the garden, selecting appropriate plants, and timing the planting effectively. SB has researched a few tips to ensure a fruitful and vibrant garden as the seasons shift.

1.Preparation:

Assess the soil quality by testing the pH levels and nutrient composition. Added compost or well-rotted manure, can enhance soil fertility.

2.Plant selection:

Perennial flowers that thrive in cooler weather and add vibrancy to the garden landscape. Plants like asters, chrysanthemums, and sedums not only bloom beautifully but also provide vital sustenance for pollinators preparing for winter. Ornamental plants such as ornamental cabbage and kale, as well as colorful grasses, can create visual interest and texture in the garden. The strategic selection of these plants ensures that the garden remains lively and productive throughout the fall season.

3.Timing:

Understanding the first frost dates in our region is essential for planning the planting schedule.

4.Maintenance:

This ensures that plants remain healthy and productive as the temperatures drop. Implement proper watering techniques; cooler temperatures often lead to reduced evaporation rates, which can mislead gardeners about the moisture needs of their plants. Check the soil moisture regularly and adjust watering schedules accordingly, as overwatering can lead to root rot and other complications.

5.Fertilization:

Strategies for fall gardens should be tailored to the specific needs of each plant. A balanced fertilizer, rich in phosphorus and potassium, can support root development and prepare plants for the stress of winter. It’s also advisable to apply fertilizers later in the season to avoid stimulating excessive growth that may not have time to harden off before frost.

6.Protection:

Pests, such as aphids and spider mites, can thrive in the fall, often seeking refuge in the more sheltered environments of gardens. Keeping your garden clean by removing any debris or diseased plants can help reduce the likelihood of disease outbreaks, ensuring a healthier garden environment.

7.Mulching:

Select appropriate mulch materials. Organic options such as straw, shredded leaves, and wood chips are excellent choices that not only suppress weeds but also enrich the soil as they decompose. Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil, which becomes increasingly important as the days grow shorter, and rainfall becomes less predictable. Mulching regulates soil temperature, creating a more stable environment for plant roots as they transition into the cooler months. A layer of 2 to 4 inches is typically recommended, ensuring that the mulch is spread evenly around the base of the plants but not touching the stems to prevent rot. Regularly replenishing mulch as it breaks down. Applying a thick layer of mulch around the base can help protect roots from freezing temperatures.

8. Boundaries:

You should never neglect the boundaries and the extra safety they bring. As your garden flourishes in the cooler times, it’s a good idea to install or update fences that further protect plants from wildlife. You could attempt this yourself or get a fencing company to magic up something pretty. With solid boundaries, you can also create a defined, attractive spot dedicated to them alone. Even the simplest improvements will make a huge difference in this regard.

Initially, neonatal care was rudimentary, often limited to basic interventions for infants born prematurely or with congenital conditions. The historical development of neonatal intensive care can be traced back to the 19th century when the understanding of infant health was limited and often fraught with misconceptions. Early attempts at neonatal care were characterized by a lack of specialized knowledge and resources; premature infants were generally considered unlikely to survive.

However, establishing specialized nurseries in the early 20th century marked a pivotal shift in neonatal care. The first of these nurseries emerged in France in the 1880s, when physicians began recognizing the need for dedicated spaces to care for sick and premature infants. By the 1940s, the concept of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) began to take shape, with hospitals developing dedicated areas equipped with advanced medical technologies and staffed by healthcare professionals specializing in the care of newborns. A key milestone in this evolution was the introduction of incubators in the 1930s, which provided a controlled environment to protect vulnerable infants from external stresses.

And like her mom, Oaklynn spent the first days of her life in the neonatal intensive care unit at Willis Knighton South. “It was very emotional to see my daughter experience with her daughter some of what I went through with her,” says Shakeena’s mother, Marilyn Burns. The discovery that neonatologist Dr. Bharti M. Manchandia and registered nurse Suzie Hapgood would care for Oaklynn brought Burns to tears. Both had cared for Shakeena in 1999 as a 1 pound, 14 ounce micro preemie, and now they would be providing that same care to Burns’ granddaughter. “Dr. Manchandia said, ‘I took care of your daughter. I will take care of your granddaughter. Everything will be alright,’” Burns says. “It was a full circle moment,” Shakeena added. “We all cried when we realized the same doctor and nurse that took care of me would be taking care of my baby.” “When I saw the name Pickney, I remembered I had taken care of a baby with that name before,” Hapgood recalls. “It’s not a common name. I couldn’t believe it.” “Her eyes got so big,” Burns says when the connection registered with Hapgood. “Soon, we all were crying.” The love and quality care provided by Willis Knighton NICU neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and other healthcare providers hasn’t changed since Marilyn Burns gave birth to her baby girl 24 years ago. The health organization’s tiniest, most vulnerable patients continue to receive intensive medical care from highly trained specialists using the most advanced medical technology.

But the NICU Burns remembers is long gone. In 2007, Willis Knighton expanded its NICU from 3,793 square feet to 22,069 square feet and became the first in the region to offer a neonatal intensive care unit with single patient rooms. It was a revolutionary concept. The expansion ended one of the most challenging parts for parents of a baby who has to spend time in a NICU – going home at the end of emotionally draining days, leaving their baby behind, and the heartbreak of separation remembered years later. “It was a scary, sad and emotional experience,” Burns recalls—the physical separation. Not being able to feed her baby herself and not being able to solely care for her baby. Feeling helpless. Not knowing what news she would get when the phone rang. “At that time, all babies and mothers were in a big open ward together, separated only by curtains,” Burns says. “We would watch when other moms lost their babies because we were all in the same room. It was very hard emotionally.” Single patient rooms at Willis Knighton’s NICU enable parents to stay overnight with their newborn and give staff more access and interaction with them and their baby. The calming environment, individual lighting, and reduced noise levels help babies achieve developmental goals. Rooms also provide moms space and privacy to breastfeed, practice skin-toskin bonding, and be more intimately involved in their newborn’s care. Shakeena Pinkney says she’s grateful for a more private NICU experience with a family-centered focus.

She remembers her first night home with her baby daughter well. “We were so nervous,” she says with a laugh. “We were scared. I told myself, ‘I’m just not going to go to sleep. I’m staying up. I wanted to check her breathing.” Something all mothers do.

While this is not a daily occurrence at the NICU, it reinforces that the Willis Knighton Hospital NICU’s achievements are not merely anecdotal; they are backed by a wealth of successful outcomes and ongoing research initiatives that highlight the unit’s commitment to excellence in neonatal care. Case studies from the NICU illustrate the remarkable resilience of premature infants, many of whom have overcome significant health challenges to thrive.

However, the best response has come from parents who were able to bond with their babies in a more private setting. The single-patient room (SPR) design offers many benefits, such as a decrease in how long the patient stays, a reduction in the incidence of sepsis, and a decreased use of supplemental oxygen. More importantly, SPR provides a more intimate bonding experience between parent and infant.

Willis Knighton Hospital NICU exemplifies the best practices in neonatal care, combining advanced medical technology with compassionate, familycentered support. From its thoughtfully designed facility to its dedicated team of professionals, every aspect of the NICU is geared toward providing the highest level of care for vulnerable newborns. The rigorous patient care protocols and the emphasis on family involvement ensure that infants and their families receive the support they need during critical times. The NICU’s commitment to innovation and community outreach highlights its vital role in advancing neonatal medicine and promoting public health awareness. As the field of neonatal care continues to evolve, the Willis Knighton Hospital NICU remains at the forefront, dedicated to saving lives and fostering hope for families facing the challenges of prematurity and illness.

Conceived in 1892 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker is based on the libretto by Alexandre Dumas père, titled The Tale of the Nutcracker, which is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

Each year the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet presents this heartwarming story in a ballet extravaganza full of celebration and holiday sparkle – the perfect holiday family event.

This year’s production comes to us from an international and local ensemble that will grace the Strand Theatre stage on November 19th. The 32nd annual North American tour showcases a fusion of talent from esteemed ballet capitals worldwide, converging on one stage to spread the overarching message of the holidays– peace.

Headlined by principal dancers hailing from renowned opera houses in Ukraine and joined by a troupe of 40 exceptional artists representing Japan, Italy, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Poland, and beyond, the 2024 tour unveils newly reimagined scenes crafted by acclaimed Polish choreographer Viktor Davydiuk. Seamlessly blending classical ballet with avant-garde circus techniques, Davydiuk’s vision breaks new ground in ballet-theatrical presentation.

College football, in particular, evokes a range of pure emotions that run deep within the Southern culture, where the sport is often viewed as a rite of passage and a source of pride. Many games are more than just competitions; they are cultural events that bring together generations of families and friends, creating an atmosphere charged with excitement and anticipation. As fans don their team colors and gather around grills and tables, they partake in a shared experience that reinforces their allegiance and connection to one another. As the sun rises on game day, the enticing aromas of gumbo, jambalaya, and beignets waft through the air, beckoning fans to indulge in the flavors that define Louisiana’s gastronomy. Tailgating has evolved from a simple gathering of friends enjoying food and drinks from the back of their vehicles to a festive occasion featuring elaborate setups filled with mouthwatering dishes that are perfect for sharing. Traditional offerings such as fried chicken, red beans and rice, po’boys, and catfish reflect the cultural mosaic of Louisiana, while each dish tells a story of family recipes passed down through generations. Beyond the food itself, the act of sharing these culinary delights embodies the essence of community, as laughter and conversations flow freely, creating lasting memories that extend far beyond the final whistle.

In this lively social setting, the simple act of sharing a meal or engaging in conversation can break down barriers, allowing attendees to forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones. Whether it is a seasoned alumni reminiscing about their college days or a group of students bonding over their first game, the emotional connections made during these tailgating experiences resonate deeply, adding a layer of significance to the day’s festivities that extends far beyond the final score of the game. Around here, tailgating is not just a prelude to the game but a celebration of life, friendship, and the unwavering spirit of Louisiana football.

The world of acting is not just about playing a role on stage; it involves a deep exploration of human emotions and experiences. It’s not a place for people unwilling to put in a great deal of work, nor a place for prima donnas prone to temper tantrums. The theatre, with its immersive and collaborative nature, requires people working together to create a magical space where stories come to life. It’s challenging and also one of the best excuses to never stop learning and growing.

It was one (or perhaps all) of these attributes that compelled high school senior Logan Sledge to make the long walk from Byrd High School in Shreveport to the Centenary College Campus to talk to Dr. Robert Buseick, the head of the theatre program. That walk would take him on a journey that would deepen his love of this art form, where he would ultimately find a new love for sharing his talents with others through teaching.

Logan’s interest in theatre didn’t just come out of the blue. He credits his early performance experiences to Randy Edwards at First Baptist Church. Edwards produced choir shows that incorporated sermon-style performance pieces. “That’s really where I got some very early and valuable acting experience, being up there myself in front of everyone. We traveled the country with that choir,” Logan says. He recalled one tour stop at a prison. When he took the stage for his “sermon,” he got a reaction from his audience. It turned into more of a call-and-response moment. A give-and-take that happens with a live audience. “It’s that moment where you meet them, and they meet you, and there’s that exchange that happens, I got to experience in that setting – different setting, obviously. I’m doing something that’s working. I’m doing something that has some meaning to it. These people are with me. It’s touching them. Here. (pointing to chest) It’s touching them. It’s having an impact. I think that’s what they talk about when they say that bug that you get. You know? It’s just that energy from an audience.”

He played numerous roles in Marjorie Lyon’s Playhouse’s opening show, Bent, also set in a prison. His most memorable show? There were several. “Lost In Yonkers. That was kind of a breakthrough performance in my mind just because it was more of a character role. Lonely Planet stands out. That was just me and Patric McWilliams. It was a 2 person show. Even at that stage, I was still getting this complete master class in acting from my acting partner. It was the show that really taught me what Patric and Buseick, and others had told me all along. If you are just present and listening, your attention is on your acting partner; they’re going to give you your performance.”

Fast forward to graduation and a big move to the West Coast to naturally pursue a film acting career. “Being all of 23 years old, I just thought that was the direction I wanted to go. I love theater and had so much fun doing it, but I really wanted to get into film and television and film in particular,” says Logan.

He enrolled in grad school at Cal State University, Fullerton, and started teaching as an adjunct there to earn income while auditioning for films. For the fall semester, he had 365 students in one class. That’s extreme, coming from a small campus like Centenary to such a large population of Fine Arts students.

Returning to Shreveport was just the beginning of his journey back to Centenary, where he is now the Chair of the Theatre Department. He was instrumental in developing the Centenary Theatre Program’s (CTP) curriculum, designed for four years of progressive learning. Graduates of the program are “prepared for a successful transition to graduate school or professional work.”

Logan and colleagues John Gayle, Don Hooper, and Alan Berry used their downtime during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop a strategic plan for the future of CTP. They modeled it after the college’s strategic plan of growing enrollment, recruiting, and retaining students. The result? The incoming class this past fall was the largest they’ve seen in quite a while. This fall’s class is shaping up nicely, with thirteen students already committed. Once enrollment increases, the department can “put in for another tenure track.” The short-term goal is to work with the music department to develop a musical theatre minor and to bring dance back. The long-term goal is to build a new performing arts building in the field adjacent to Marjorie Lyons Playhouse.

All it takes is money, right? This is just a suggestion, but if a person wants to help fund the performing arts program at Centenary, they can earmark their donation to ensure it goes towards the goal of Logan’s dream theatre. “I’d like to see us actually get to the point where we had probably somewhere in that 60 major range.

Four full-time faculty members, a musical theater program reinstated, dance back with us the way it’s supposed to be. A collaboration with a professional theater company that shares our stage with us,” he says.

Would Logan rather be performing in New York as a professional actor? (Because he absolutely could – he’s that talented.) “…along the way, I discovered that I really do like teaching. There’s nothing like it. You get to watch these young, emerging theater artists do what they love to do. If you’re open to it, the joy that it actually gives you is immeasurable. We meet them where they are, and they just make these leaps, and it’s like, wow!”

It’s true what they say. The rewards of teaching theatre go beyond the classroom when you can stand back and watch a student blossom and grow. When you give them the opportunity to become a successful adult on whatever path they choose to take, actor or not, you have done your job well.

As audiences continue to be captivated by the art of acting and the allure of the theatre, the world of performance will continue to thrive and inspire generations to come. It’s comforting to know that we have professionals like Logan Sledge in our community. He is committed to nurturing and teaching up-and-comers so that live theatre remains a thriving source of entertainment that continues to enrich our lives in countless ways.

Various factors influence the real estate market, including economic conditions, interest rates, and local market trends. Economic conditions, such as employment rates and income levels, can impact housing demand and prices. Joel Hall of RE/MAX United says, “We’re off to a good start to the year so far. Interest rates have settled.” You might think that the housing market, along with a number of other markets, might seem to slow down during an election year. Hall adds, “There are no wild swings in interest rates just because an office may change hands.” That being said, fluctuations in interest rates can affect mortgage affordability, thereby influencing homebuyers’ buying power.
Understanding these market dynamics can help buyers and sellers make informed decisions about timing their transactions and pricing their properties competitively. For the buyer, Hall recommends that you begin by securing a lender and get pre-qualified. By assessing your financial readiness, setting a budget, and obtaining mortgage pre-approval, you streamline the buying process by providing a clear budget to work with. Selling a home requires careful preparation. “You only have one shot at a first impression,” Hall says. “Look at your home through the buyer’s eyes. Fix things that need to be fixed.
Have your HVAC units, roof, and water heater inspected. Keep receipts to show a clean bill of health.”

Zondra Spikes of Keller Williams agrees, adding,
“Decluttering and staging the property is essential.
Unpersonalizing your home (storing family photos and other items of a personal nature) allows buyers to envision their belongings in the home. If the property is occupied, I will often use what’s available when I stage it. If it’s vacant, I’ll often hire a staging company and add home décor to make the home more appealing to the potential buyer.
This gives the house a little
‘pop’ and brings out the features better.”
Setting the right price is crucial, as pricing too high can deter buyers, while pricing too low may result in lost profits. Real estate agents can provide valuable insights into market trends and comparable sales to help sellers price their homes competitively.
Negotiating offers and navigating contracts are critical aspects of real estate
transactions. Buyers and sellers must understand the intricacies of offer
submissions, counteroffers, and contingencies to protect their interests. Effective negotiation tactics, such as maintaining clear communication and being willing to compromise, can help parties reach mutually beneficial agreements. Real estate agents play a key role in guiding clients through negotiations and ensuring that contract terms are favorable and legally sound.

Home inspections and appraisals are essential in the home-buying process to uncover potential issues and ensure the property’s value. Home inspections identify any hidden problems with the property, such as structural defects or safety hazards, allowing buyers to make informed decisions about proceeding with the purchase. Appraisals assess the property’s value based on various factors, including its condition, location, and comparable sales in the area.
Buyers and sellers can leverage inspection and appraisal reports to negotiate repairs, adjustments to the purchase price, or other contract terms.
When nearing the closing stages of a real estate transaction, buyers and sellers encounter various legal and financial aspects that require careful consideration. Escrow and closing costs are standard components of the closing process, with escrow serving as a neutral third party that holds funds and documents until all contract conditions are met. Understanding the breakdown of fees associated with the transaction, including lender fees, appraisal fees, title insurance, and transfer taxes, is essential for both parties to anticipate their financial obligations accurately. The escrow process involves verifying the terms of the purchase agreement, ensuring all necessary documents are in order, and coordinating the final transfer of funds and ownership.
One of the most common pitfalls in real estate transactions is overpricing or underpricing a property. Overpricing can lead to prolonged market time and decreased interest from potential buyers, while underpricing may result in lost profits for sellers. Conducting a thorough market analysis with the guidance of your real estate agent can help buyers and sellers avoid these pitfalls by accurately pricing the property based on its value and market conditions.

Denny Duron was a member of the first graduating class to attend all three years at Captain Shreve High School in 1970. He was a member of the Gator football team. During this time, Denny felt a calling to preach the gospel and had plans to attend seminary. But Louisiana Tech University came calling with a scholarship offer, which he promptly declined. They urged him to go and see Terry Bradshaw play his last college game, and as he sat watching, God spoke to him. Tech is where the Lord needed him to be. Now, this was back in the days before Tim Tebow. Players usually didn’t show their religious beliefs. There were a few exceptions, but for the most part, you kept it hidden. Denny asked himself, “Play football for the glory of God-what does that mean? What is the end game here?” Well, let’s see.

During his junior year, Denny was switched from playing Ist string wide receiver to 4th string quarterback. Denny didn’t particularly care for that – going from a starter to riding the bench. But God spoke to him and said he would quarterback the team to an undefeated season for the first time in Louisiana Tech’s history “for my Glory.” Long story short, Tech was undefeated that year. At the bowl game, an ABC reporter shoved a microphone in his face and commented that the bowl victory made their win 12 in a row. Denny replied, “Well, sir, I asked God for an 11-0 season, and he gave us a 12-0, praise glory.” That shows you what God can do.

After playing a few years of professional football, Denny returned home to Shreveport to help his father “finish” leading his church. Once his father retired, Denny had every intention of resigning his position. Again, this was not in God’s plan for him. “Because I’m a Christian, here’s what I believe with all my heart. It doesn’t matter what we want to do with our life. We have to listen to God’s plan for our life. If we just ignored what He wants for us, we would go down wrong paths over and over again – and then how would your life turn out?”

Denny chose the path God laid out for him, and countless lives have been changed. His mother. Frances. had founded a school in 1980 that Denny was destined to be part of. Evangel Christian Academy has grown from a K-8th grade school to one of our area’s most established and “highly honored” K-12th grade schools. ECA focuses on providing a comprehensive education as it prepares its students for various aspects of life, from academics and athletics to spiritual growth and development.

The role of faith in the establishment of Evangel Christian Academy cannot be overstated. Denny believes in the power of the Holy Spirit to affect the Kingdom of God through students who are mature in their Christian faith. Denny started a football program, which he coached for a number of years. Under his and numerous other coaches’ guidance, the Evangel Varsity team has garnered 18 District Championships, 43 State Championships, and 1 National Championship. Over the years, Evangel Christian Academy has achieved several notable milestones in its development. It has been named by USA Todav as one of the top eight high school springboards to the NFL. This recognition is a testament to the school’s rigorous athletic program, which has sent some 30 football players to the NFL and other professional leagues.

In addition to football, Evangel Christian Academy offers a variety of sports for students to participate in, including baseball, boys’ and girls’ basketball, cheering, and more.

Each athletic program aims to develop well-rounded student-athletes who excel in their respective sports while also prioritizing character development and community involvement. Evangel Christian Academy fosters an environment where students can thrive on and off the field by emphasizing the importance of athletics and personal growth.

Denny used football as a platform to share the gospel. He’d been trying to set football aside his whole life, and God just wouldn’t let up. “We have to listen to God’s plan for our life.” This is what he believes, and this is what he has taught so many Evangel Footballi players. Could this be God’s plan for Denny all along? With every winning season, through the trials of the losing ones, Denny believes that the Lord has helped them do what they do. “We just couldn’t take credit for it, honestly. To tell the truth, there’s nobody that understands what has happened here,” Denny chuckles. I like to call it what it is – a God thing.

At the age of 10, Aaron Benward met Denny when his father, Jeffery, and Denny were ministering together. Denny Duron impacted Aaron at such a young age that he considers Denny a mentor. For 40 years, they’ve kept in close touch. One day, during a phone conversation, Aaron asked how the football team was doing. Denny replied that they were having a hard time. It was so hard, in fact, that Denny was coming out of retirement to head up the coaching staff. Aaron asked, “When?” Denny replied, “Tomorrow.” After that phone call with Denny, Aaron began to toss around the idea of making a docu-series based on “one of my favorite people – one of my heroes,” Denny Duron. And with that, he began what became a three-year process, from the first day of shooting to the date it was aired. “God, Family, Football” follows ex-football player and high school football coach Denny Duron as he leads the team during the 2022 high school football season. The series ran on Amazon’s premium free streaming service, Free Vee. Evangel just signed a contract with Fox Nation for two more seasons with an additional two episodes per season.

The role of athletics at Evangel Christian Academy extends beyond physical prowess, as the school uses sports as a platform for character development and community building. In the “God, Family, Football” docuseries, we see Evangel players being taught to put God first in their pursuit of success on the football field, with coaches emphasizing the importance of faith, dedication, and teamwork. This approach to athletics instills valuable life lessons in student-athletes, preparing them for success in all aspects of their lives. For example, Denny uses a “Performance Spectrum” chart for his coaches to understand better who is “in the game.” The Performance Spectrum evaluates each player’s capabilities, practice performance, and actual game performance on a scale of 1 to 3. The spectrum never lies and allows coaches to call the right plays with the right players on the field at the right time. There are a few exceptions to what appears on the chart. Thoroughbreds, for example. Denny explains, “Some players are scaled high on the skill set chart but are low on almost everything else, but they still help you win ball games.
You have to recognize your thoroughbreds and figure out how to treat them without messing up the culture and chemistry of the team.” Denny is currently working on writing a book on the Performance Spectrum Theory. It applies not only to coaching sports but also to business coaching and leadership.
“God, Family, Football” is a spellbinding viewing event. It not only follows Denny and his coaching staff but also takes you into the lives of some players. Their home life, their school day, the ups and downs of winning and losing, and Evangel’s impact on community involvement.

We witness the camaraderie and support among the players, coaches, and families. Evangel has an energetic team of moms working behind the scenes to support their boys. Watching and reinforcing the importance of these relationships within the Evangel community is inspiring.
Viewing the show will give insight into who and what Denny Duron is.
Evangel Christian Academy has big plans for expansion and growth in the coming years. One of the primary focuses of this growth is their football program’s continued development and success.
