Summer in northwest Louisiana is absolutely crazy, and now that you’re into the full swing of things, you can handle the hype. Here are just a few of the great events to calm you down a bit and stagger your summer energy this month.

EVENT: Louisiana Baby & Beyond Expo, 12 – 5 p.m., Bossier Civic Center
The Louisiana Baby & Beyond Expo is an exciting, unique event for northwest Louisiana. This event will showcase baby and kid products and services. All new and expectant parents, as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends and children of all ages are invited. Come and be prepared to learn, celebrate and be inspired.
EVENT: Shreveport Night Market, 4 – 9 p.m., Mall St. Vincent, Shreveport
The new Shreveport Night Market is a huge free event with more than 150 vendors and food trucks planned. This outdoor market all happens in the evening, lit up by thousands of twinkling holiday-style lights. Parking and admission are free.
MUSIC: Restless Heart, 8 p.m., Margaritaville Resort Casino, Bossier City
Restless Heart has enjoyed one of the most successful careers in country music history, placing over 25 singles on the charts. With four gold albums and six consecutive No. 1 hits like I’ll Still Be Loving You, Fast Movin’ Train, The Bluest Eyes in Texasand When She Cries, they’ve won a wide range of awards, including the Academy of Country Music’s Top Vocal Group. Come see them live, only at Margaritaville’s Paradise Theater, on August 4th at 8 p.m.

MUSIC: Hank Williams, Jr., 8 p.m., The Riverdome at Horseshoe Casino, Bossier City
Five-time Country Music Entertainer of the Year award winner Hank Williams, Jr. will appear in concert at Horseshoe’s Riverdome on Friday, August 10 at 8 p.m. Son of the late country music star Hank Williams, Hank Jr. struggled for years to perform the country music that made his late father great. In his twenties, following a low point in his personal life, Hank Jr. sustained serious injuries from a climbing fall. During his recovery from the fall he began reshaping his career, changing his music style and rising to country superstar status with major hits including Texas Women, Dixie On My Mindand All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down).

EVENT: Legends of Tomorrow – 29th Annual Auction Against AIDS, 6 – 10 p.m., Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino, Shreveport
The Philadelphia Center presents “Legends of Tomorrow.” The 29th Annual Auction Against AIDS will be held on Saturday, August 11 at Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Come to enjoy a night of intrigue with superheroes and villains along with local art, silent auction items and contests that you will not want to miss. This year’s event includes performances by our local drag artists who will bring to life Aunty Entity, Wonder Woman, Cat Woman, Black Widow and Poison Ivy.
August 17
EVENT: Geek’d Con, 6 – 9 p.m., Shreveport Convention Center
Geek’d Con, the popular annual fan convention will return to the Shreveport Convention Center, Aug. 17-19, 2018. This three-day convention welcomes more than 10,000 attendees annually to browse vendor booths, meet celebrity guests, attend panel discussions and more. National headliners including comic book artists, stars of TV and film, and professional cosplay groups will be in attendance.

Louisiana music legend Wayne Toups was born into a family of rice farmers in Crowley, Louisiana, and first picked up an accordion when he was 13. He has combined Cajun music, zydeco, R&B and rock into a genre he calls Zydecajun, singing in both English and Cajun French. See Wayne Toups live, only at Margaritaville.

EVENT: Powerboat Nationals, 12 – 6 p.m., Red River between Riverview Park and the Louisiana Boardwalk, Shreveport
The Powerboat Nationals will be held on the Red River August 31-September 2, 2018. Friday will be a practice day from 2-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8:30 – 11 a.m. is practice followed by racing from noon – 6 p.m.

Tracy Lawrence is easily one of the most recognizable voices in country music.
