SHARKS, STING RAYS, AND PIRATES—OH MY!
BY ELIZABETH DEAL
The Shreveport Aquarium has been open downtown since 2017 and is home to over 1000 creatures made up of over 300 different species of marine life ranging from turtles and eels to seahorses and sharks. Regular exhibits and special events cater to both kids and adults. The motto: Come Curious, Leave Inspired.
Hunt for treasure, gems, fossilized shark teeth, and ancient marine specimens in the treasure mine. Meander through the exhibit to view all the varieties of marine life. Experience touch pools including a moon jelly and watch feedings of alligator snapping turtles, sharks and sting rays (check the feeding schedule)!
There’s now a new outdoor event space at the aquarium— the Pavilion. The aquarium will provide day-of event or wedding coordination and full-service catering by Chef Anthony Felan of Fat Calf Brasserie.
“The defining feature of the space is undoubtedly the superb panoramic view of the Red River and bridges. It’s amazing,” says Jon Whitehead, the Director of Development. “Not only is the Pavilion itself a beautiful place to enjoy any celebration but the views of the river and the Texas Street Bridge at night will create the most stunning backdrop. We are looking forward to the completion of the programmable LED lighting on the bridge and the new light shows that will debut each month. We have the ideal spot to take it all in.”
The new Pavilion accommodates up to 140 seated guests and includes a fire pit, state-of- the-art infrared heaters, oversized ceiling fans and retractable weatherproof enclosures in case of bad weather. The Pavilion is adjacent to the indoor event space (previously the restaurant) that can seat an additional 100 guests.
Fall brings with it some special events at the aquarium. There’s MUTINY, a Haunted Pirate Adventure with chills, thrills and gills! It will be open the entire month of October and is appropriate for all ages. Participants will make their through the aquarium learning pirate skills and stamping them off on a pirate passport. Along the way, discover bat stars, wolf eels and all kinds of cool and creepy sea creatures, mermaid stories, sing-a-longs and other Halloween surprises. At the end, meet the Pirate Captain and grab some loot from his treasure chest.
On the night before Halloween, there’s a special event just for adults (21+). THE CANNON BALL—a rum fest and bawdy pirate show—includes costume contests, prizes, games, grub and grog!
Grab your sense of adventure and head down to the Shreveport Aquarium. You won’t be disappointed!
