“Time is money” couldn’t be a more accurate statement to describe this watch.

Rolex has always been known for luxury, but it’s the Day-Date that embodies true sophistication and class. Affectionately known as the “Presidential” watch because of the President style bracelet (semi-circular three-piece links), Rolex’s Day-Date has been worn by the likes of Lyndon B. Johnson, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and current President Donald Trump.

The Day-Date made its debut in 1956 as the first waterproof and self-winding chronometer wristwatch to offer a modern calendar (with the day and date) on its face. Reportedly, Kennedy was the first president to receive this watch as a gift — from none other than Marilyn Monroe. It was May 1962 when Monroe sang “Happy birthday, Mr. President” that she would gift him this timepiece. While their private affair was mostly hidden from the public eye, the watch resurfaced more than four decades later when it hit the auction block in 2005 and sold for $120,000. Inscribed on the back is “JACK With love as always from MARILYN May 29th, 1962.”

That classic gold watch can still be purchased through Rolex, but with a hefty price tag. Coming it at just over $55K, the Day-Date is sought after by influentials, executives and officials alike. The specific watch is available in 18k yellow gold, white gold, rose gold or platinum. The bezel (the rim that holds the glass in place) is customizable and can be fluted, smooth or set with gems.

A little about the company: Swiss Based Rolex was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf. His goal at the time was to create a watch worn on the wrist with true precision. It wouldn’t be until 1908 that he would coin the name “Rolex,” a result from a random formation of letters in the alphabet that he hoped would transcend language barriers.

For 10 years the watchmaker concentrated on the chronometric precision it needed to take to make his watches, and in 1926 released the first “Oyster.” In 1931 the company invented and patented the world’s first self-winding mechanism with a perpetual rotor which is the basis of every modern automatic watch.

This specific watch, including other options by Rolex, are available through Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry, 6605 Youree Drive in Shreveport.
