Latrinity Grissom is a senior at Southwood High School where she currently is enrolled in an advanced art class. When she graduates in just a few short weeks, the class will be her first and only in her high school career.

“I’m all self-taught,” she said, pointing to her sketchbook filled with page after page of drawings. “It all just started from watching Disney, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. One day when I was watching my favorite cartoon, I took out my notebook and pencil and started drawing. Just practicing and practicing.”

Her goal was to create stories about her favorite cartoons, transporting them into her world. Not only does she draw them, she also writes stories for them. She’s been drawing her entire life, but it wasn’t until her senior year that she decided to merge her hobby with the classroom.

“My art style is still evolving, but I’m glad I have a chance to grow with my art teacher. She pushes me,” she said. She mentioned that her art teacher used to be in the Air Force, and that she too would like to pursue something bigger than the arts.

“I love the idea of helping people. I’m interested in an LPN program,” she said.

Latrinity plans to attend Louisiana State University in Shreveport in the fall. She recently visited the university for a tour and is interested in pursuing computer science, as well. She said she’s tinkered with the idea of creating a YouTube channel for her art because she also does commission worked. She’s also in the process of creating a comic with her friends.
