If all goes according to plan, this time next year Hailey Bryant will be in the middle of her second semester of her first year of college. The 18-year-old C. E. Byrd High School senior will attend Howard University in Washington, D.C.

“It’s fast paced,” she said. “We were up there for three days and it’s a bunch of people. But I’m ready.”

While Hailey plans to pursue sports medicine in her undergrad, she’s not ruling out her first love: music.

“I don’t want to give up performing. I’m going to minor in theater or musical performance,” she said. “I’ve always liked to sing, but this year I’m getting out there and doing it.”

She said she plans to do as much as she can in Shreveport-Bossier City’s musical community before she leaves. Performing since she was a toddler (singing, dancing and acting), she said it all started with her mother who is the choir director at her church. From there, she fostered a love of R&B and gospel. She cites Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Charlie Wilson and Marvin Gaye, to name a few.

Hailey is also a part of the Talented Arts Program for visual arts but has been in for music. She loves to create as a 2-D artist and can also play the piano.

As for her plans this summer before going off to college?

“My friends and I are deciding between an Ariana Grande concert or going to seeHamilton,” she said. “Which do we go see?”
