Daniel Scott has played the saxophone since he was in the sixth grade.
“It just sort of felt natural,” he said.
The 18-year-old Benton High School senior grew up in a musical household, noting his father listened to Prince and Earth, Wind, and Fire. At the time, he was playing football, but his mother wanted him to get into something else. He chose music.
“I didn’t like strings so I stayed with the alto sax,” he said. “I liked how keys felt.”
Now he’s transformed that into a full time career as a student, performing at events such as the Let the Good Times Roll Festival and the Red River Revel. He is also a member of the Talented Arts Program and is the student director for the Talented Arts Jazz Band.
After high school, Scott plans to attend Northwestern State University in Natchitoches and major in music education. His goal is to help teach others what he’s been taught.
“This is what I want to do for the rest of my life,” he said.
