Jimmy Wooten was made for music. The Shreveport native was born into a musical family. His parents were in a band and played music for a living for nearly his whole life. At three years old, Wooten picked up drumsticks and began jamming with his folks. When he graduated high school at Caddo Magnet, he began touring as a drummer for Joe Nadeau — until he picked up a guitar— and it was love at first play.
Wooten learned what he knows about music from his father and other musicians.
“Any time I’m playing music, I’m learning from other people in the band,” Wooten said. “I’m always learning new stuff.”
Now, Wooten can play anything from drums and guitar to bass and vocals. He’s also a producer and engineer at his recording studio called The Pond Studios located in Haughton.
Touring with Nadeau right out of school inspired Wooten to make a living doing what he loves. Now, he’s put out his first solo EP called Shine.
“I’ve been talking about putting out my own music for a long time,” said Wooten. “I’m not sure why I put it off for so long but the song just came to me one day. I already had the music for a five-song EP but this one’s lyrics came to me when I was driving around one day and I recorded the lyrics from my head to my phone so I wouldn’t forget. I went home to finish writing it, and I decided to make it my first single.”
Wooten plays all the instruments on the track except for keys. He mixed and recorded it himself in his studio.
“I love it as my first single because everybody is dealing with something whether it’s huge or small. I feel like people can hear the song and know that God’s light can shine on them and change things for them. Hopefully people in need will hear it and see a light at the end of the tunnel.”
With inspiration from guitarists such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Eric Johnson and Jeff Beck, Wooten is the bluesy rock musician you need to pay attention to.
His EP Shine will be released June 29 at Red River Brewing. Stay caught up on what Jimmy Wooten is up to by following him on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
