Jessica McDearmont went from hair stylist to salon owner in a matter of weeks.

No, she didn’t acquire someone’s business — she started her own. After being given just a few days’ notice the salon she’d worked in for 11 years was closing, she had no idea what her plan was.

“When Joey shut down the salon, it was kind of like an ‘OK, where do I fit in.’ I wasn’t sure,” said McDearmont, who previously worked for the Joseph Guin Salon in downtown Shreveport and has been pursuing hair since 2006.“I learned so much from him. That’s how I am where I am today, because of him being such a good teacher.”

Avenue Beauty Bar, located at 6030 Line Avenue, Suite 330 in Shreveport, officially opened Dec. 1. With it only open a few weeks, and during the holiday season, McDearmont’s been put to the test of balancing full-time business owner and maintaining her own client/stylist relationships.

“It’s been a learning experience, for sure, learning the business side of it,” she said. “It definitely has been humbling at the same time to see from the eyes of an owner what all it takes to run a salon, to take care of employees and things like that.”

When you walk into her cozy space, you’ll find nods of yesteryear with mid-century modern style furniture and Edison style bulbs. Millennial pink chairs sit in the waiting room. A coffee station greets guests near the door. She said her biggest inspiration when decorating was her grandmother who coincidently was a hair stylist, too.

“I was very close to her. I didn’t want to name the salon after her, but I did want to have little touches and reminders of her in there,” she said. “Everything reminds me of things she had from when I was little. That’s where my inspiration came from for all of it.”

Services at Avenue Beauty Bar are not just limited to cuts and colors, either. You can take advantage of their waxing services, lash extensions or smoothing treatments.
