Nothing says I’m ready for the new year like a dramatic cut and color.

While jewel tone hair colors were all the rage in 2018, natural but vibrant colors are shining through as the new must have. Think bright whites, warm reds and balayage. Local trends show we’re returning to our roots when it comes to chic hairstyles — literally.

For 2019, we partnered with our Best of SB 2018 winner Chemistry Hair Salon for four trends they hope to see more of in the new year. Coloring may be on the top of the list for many, but it’s really all about the cut.

THE BOB

Anna Wintour called. Nothing is more chic or modern than a high-reflect color on a confidently worn statement bob. Blunt. Monochromatic. Dramatic. These are the words that come to mind.

Tip: Finish with Redken’s Shine Flash 02 spray.

HALO HIGHLIGHT

Ring in the new year with contrasting blonde tones throughout complete with a brighter, face framing balayage. Is your stylist lightening your baby hairs? Baby hairs are the major key component to this natural, undone vibe. The more texture the better.

Tip: Try Redken’s newest dry texture product Triple Dry 15 to achieve this look.

SHAG

The shag is back, baby! Short fringe frames this modern take on a shaggy look. The shaggier the better. Volume isn’t achieved so much on the top as it is the sides of the head.

Tip: Redken Powder Grip at the roots and wax blast throughout. Try a diffuser vs. round brush.

FRINGE

We’re giving major 70s vibes with this cut. Short or long, fringe length and width should be based on face and forehead shape. Short fringe, such as this curtain cut, is parted at the brows for maximum effect. Longer hair should be worked over with pomade while still damp.

Tip: If you have long hair, try using a round brush and brush away from the cheekbones.
