We’re still in the throes of a Louisiana summer but cooler temperatures are on the horizon. Can’t you feel it? — OK, maybe not yet but with the kiddos returning to school, it’s a clear sign those sweltering days will soon be behind us. Speaking of back to school, writer Scott Anderson takes us on a trip to the City of Byrd. C. E. Byrd High School is one of the largest public schools in the state and boasts a large (and proud) group of alumni. Although the school officially opened in 1925, its history can be traced to Shreveport High School, dedicated in 1910. The culture of the Yellow Jackets is alive and well and as it approaches its centennial celebration, the school continues to be an important Shreveport landmark.
This issue also gives you a peek inside the 2018 St. Jude Dream Home located in Benton. The annual fundraiser supports the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a not-for-profit hospital that covers the cost of treatment, travel, housing and food for children battling cancer. Locals can help support the cause by purchasing a ticket to enter the Dream Home Giveaway. Hurry and get your ticket now — the winner will be announced Aug. 12 on KTBS.
Another worthy cause happening this month is the American Cancer Society’s Annual Baron’s Ball taking place Aug. 25 at East Ridge Country Club. The fundraising event features live and silent auctions, a night of dancing, delicious food and more. But make sure to wear your best white — the event’s theme is White Out Cancer.
