Dr. Vyas Ramuhalli Rao is a renowned cardiovascular thoracic surgeon, practicing in Shreveport since 2002. He is based at LSU Health Shreveport but practices as a consultant at all hospitals in Shreveport-Bossier City. His main area of practice is cardiac surgery, with treatment of coronary and valvular heart diseases.

Originally from India, Dr. Rao obtained his initial medical degree in 1982 from Bangalore Medical College and then the Master of Surgery in 1986 and the Master of Chirurgie in cardiothoracic surgery in 1988. Throughout his medical school years, he remained in the top two percent of his class, obtaining gold medals in physiology by scoring the highest marks for university in his first year of medical school. He also obtained the gold medal for community medicine in his final year of medical school.

Dr. Rao was trained on coronary endarterectomies under world-famous cardiac surgeon, Dr. W. Dudley Johnson, from 1988 to 1990 in Milwaukee, Wis. He is American Board Certified in cardiothoracic and general surgery. He has operated on many difficult and challenging heart and lung surgery patients with good results, and he is also well trained in pediatric heart surgery and heart transplants. Dr. Rao has also offered endovascular treatment for vascular ailments and has helped many individuals with vascular abdominal and thoracic aneurysms. In addition, he now also offers robotic assisted lung surgery. He has memberships in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons-Fellow (FACS), American Medical Association, Shreveport Medical Society and the Indian Medical Association (Life Member).
