Finding It Painful To Use A Computer? Here’s What Might Be Going On

Do you ever find it a bit painful to use a keyboard? Maybe you get sharp shooting pains down your wrist? Or maybe you’re unable to touch type for more than a few minutes at a time, because your hands start to cramp and you need to take a break?  You could even be experiencing troubles with lower back pain, or feeling like you can’t look at a screen for more than a minute without feeling sick.  And if any of these issues have cropped up for you lately, it’s time to tackle what they could actually mean. If you find it painful and/or uncomfortable to use a computer, here’s what might be going on. 

You’re Dealing with Eye Strain

Most people who stare at a screen for more than an hour at a time will get eye strain of some kind. Thankfully it’s not usually a serious thing to deal with, and you can fix it by looking somewhere else for at least 20 to 30 seconds.  And make sure you blink a few more times as well! When we focus on things like screens, we’re less likely to blink as many times as we really should, and our eyes tire out because of it. 

You Have RSI or Carpal Tunnel

RSI often starts as a bit of an ache in your hands. Maybe across the knuckles, or down the side of the thumb, for example. It can then soon develop into a more pressing pain sensation, as well as stiffness in your finger joints.  If you’re dealing with any symptoms like these, be sure to see a doctor to check if RSI is the culprit. Of course, RSI is more likely to develop if you use computers on an extremely regular basis, such as if you’re a desk worker. That’s why it’s becoming more and more common in office based jobs, as well as freelancing circles, and the digital working world.  If you write your own code and work on the backend of a website or software, you could very well end up with repetitive strain injury from never quite being away from the keyboard.  In some cases, you may even have the beginnings of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel can dramatically affect the way you’re able to use your hands, and severe carpal tunnel syndrome can qualify for disability benefits, if it keeps you away from your desk due to the pain or weakness it causes. 

You’re Not Sitting Correctly

Posture is everything. If you’re in pain when you’re sitting at a computer – and the pain is in your lower back or legs – you’ve probably been hunching over a bit too much.  Try to sit back, straighten out, and let your muscles stretch a little! Try to make sure your feet are flat against the floor as well, so your legs aren’t cramping up.  When you’re in pain at the computer, it could be strain, RSI, or posture issues wreaking some havoc!

Make Your Home A Place You Love Once Again With These Simple Solutions

If you’ve been struggling with your home lately, you can take comfort in the fact that you’re not the only one. There are countless people who have been in this position before, and there are people who are going to be there again. But, we know that for now this might not be much help to you, but we think it’s just nice to know it’s not just you, you know?

But, you also need to be taking practical steps to start turning your home into a place that you love again. We know that you might be busy, and that you might be on a tight budget, but this is not reason enough to not do what needs to be done.

Keep Up With The Cleaning

The first thing that we’re going to look at is keeping up with the cleaning. We know that sometimes it’s hard to do this as there are so many tasks that need to be completed on a regular basis, and you’ve already spent your day working, or doing whatever else you do throughout the day. It takes you five minutes to do it now, but it takes significantly more time if you let these chores pile up, sometimes to the point where they begin to feel unmanageable.

Make Repairs As Needed

The next thing that we’re going to be looking at is making the necessary repairs in your home. When you know that something is broken, or needs replacing, it’s imperative that you get this sorted as soon as you can. If you don’t, then you’re simply going to continue to resent your home for not being what you want it to be, and in the worst case you’re making your home a dangerous place to be.

For example, if you know that there is a leak in the roof, you should be getting up there asap to take a closer look. If you don’t want to do this yourself, then you can always hire a professional roofer in your area to take care of it for you. It might turn out that you need a roof replacement, or maybe it just needs a little fix up and it will be okay again.

No matter what, you should be checking any potential repairs, and getting them done asap before they worsen. Some you will be able to do yourself, and others you’re going to need help with.

Add Some More Space

We also want to talk about the possibility of adding some more space to your home. It may well be the case that you feel as though you’re squished into your home, and as though nobody has any real space. If this is true, and you own the property, then we recommend looking into adding some extra space to the property.

Take a look at whether you have the area available around the side or the back of your home, and then you can get in touch with a contractor. Talk to them about what you want, what you want to use it for, and they will be able to give you an accurate idea of how much this is going to cost, what other professionals you’re going to need the help of, and how long it’s going to take to complete.

No matter the cost or the timeframe, if it will make you like your home more, it’s worth doing it. It might be true that you then need to save or possibly even take out a loan, but that’s okay as long as you feel it’s worth it.

Redecorate

We’re sure that this one has already crossed your mind, but you may decide that redecorating your home is a positive step forward. Don’t be put off by the fact that you already decorated it once, as tastes change over time. What was right for you then might not work for you now, and that’s completely okay.

If you’re going to be repainting the home, we urge you to be cautious when choosing the color. Don’t choose based on the color on the tin, or the way that it looks when you open the lid. You need to get swatches and see how they look when you put them on the wall, and when they have dried. Colors look different when they’re dry to when they’re wet, and also it will depend on the current color of your wall as to how they turn out.

It might also be wise to use tools like painters tape to ensure a clean finish, and put down plastic to cover the floor just so that you don’t damage anything.

How to Upgrade Your Garage

For most people’s homes, the garage is the forgotten room. It starts out as the place for cars, then slowly becomes a storage unit for all paint cans, half used tools, Christmas decorations and that treadmill you swore you’d use but still haven’t actually worked out how to. With a few smart upgrades though, your garage can go from chaos to cool without turning into a full blown renovation nightmare.

One of the first things that homeowners often look into is improving the flooring. Searching for something like epoxy garage floor options often comes up early because a clean, shiny surface instantly changes how the space feels. But once you move past the floor, there’s a lot more you can do to turn your garage into a space that you actually enjoy using.

If you’re worried about your budget when it comes to your upgrades, make sure that you plan things out piece by piece. You don’t have to upgrade everything at the same time, right? It’s important to make a list of what’s the most important to you and then follow that to the letter. 

You can start with a serious clean out. This is the least fun part, but it’s also the most important. You need to take absolutely everything out of the garage, sort items in to keep, donate and toss piles. You want to go for something warm rather than a dungeon, and good lighting makes it easier to work on projects, find tools, and avoid stepping on anything sharp at the worst possible moment. You get bonus points here if you add motion sensors so the lights turn on automatically when you walk in like a VIP.

Now that your storage is up, let’s talk about the walls. A fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference. Light colours help to reflect, reflect light and make the space feel cleaner and more open. White, grey or beige are popular choices, but feel free to add a little personality. After all, it’s your garage, not a dentist’s office.

If you spend time working in your garage, comfort matters. Insulating the garage door and walls can help to control temperature better and reduce noise. This is super helpful if you use the space as a workshop, a Home Office, or a gym. A small fan or heater can also make a big difference depending on the season. But don’t forget about the garage door itself. An old, noisy door can be annoying and unattractive. Adding more outlets to your garage gives you more flexibility for tools, charges, and equipment. Once those basics are covered, you can then think more about how you actually want to use the space. Maybe it’s part garage, part workshop, maybe it’s a hobby zone or a gym. A workbench with proper storage can turn the garage into a DIY haven, and rubber mats or foam flooring can make workouts more comfortable. Even a small fridge for drinks can feel a little like a luxury upgrade if you’re going to be working from the garage as you work from home.
