From the revitalization of the Caddo Common Park to the surge of local entrepreneurship, the evidence of our collective effort is everywhere. We’ve seen a remarkable 15% increase in small business openings since 2023, proving that Shreveport remains a fertile ground for dreamers. Our tech sector is humming, anchored by new investments in digital infrastructure, while our cultural scene—from Prize Fest to the Red River Revel—has reached recordbreaking attendance, drawing eyes from across the South. We are on the verge of becoming a film making mecca and new jobs are coming our way.

This is the “Will You Be My Valentine?” month. School children swap Valentine’s Day cards, teachers rearrange their desks to accommodate all the mugs, scented soaps, and candles gifted by students. Husbands bring home heart shaped boxes of assorted chocolates or, perhaps, a dozen sweet smelling roses. I’ve often wondered how this day, February 14th, came to be. Is it another invention of the Hallmark Greeting Card company? Or can we trace it farther back? Maybe even to Pagan days?In fact, some scholars date its origins to Roman times, when two different Catholic martyrs, one was named Valentine, were executed in different years but on the same day of the month. February 14th. I’m not sure how anything romantic could be spun from this except that another story claims that Valentine wrote the first “valentine” to a girl he had tutored and fell in love with while he was imprisoned for the crimes he was executed for. According to The History Channel, before his death, he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine.” Awe!Other scholars attribute the celebration of this holiday to the poet Chaucer who wrote his 14th-century works “The Parliament of Fowls.” At the time, February 14 also happened to be the first day of spring in Britain, and the beginning of the bird mating season—and as we know, many birds will mate for life. Valentine’s Day became the commercialized celebration we know today by the mid 19th century. Cupid, the son of the Goddess of Love, Venus was probably added by then. Whatever legend you believe, the day is significant as a day we should observe a day of love. After all, that’s what the world needs right now.

How to Plan a Wedding When the Venue Rules Feel Restrictive

You can probably agree that venue shopping can feel fun at first. You get to see all these pretty spaces, nice lighting, big “this could be it” energy, and you probably can just stand there and imagine all these fun late-night celebrations you and your soon-to-be spouse will be doing at the wedding reception, right? Well, then there’s the rules, and maybe once hearing or reading over the news, it kinda makes you want to take a step back because who wants a controlled environment?

People don’t always realize until they’re deep into planning that every venue has constraints. It doesn’t matter if it’s a barn, a hotel. Venues do have their constraints, and yes, they all do, and yes, and it’s obviously for good reason too. So, expecting free rein is usually where disappointment starts. And of course, the better approach is planning around constraints on purpose, so the wedding still feels like the couple, not like a list of limitations.

You Need to Understand Why the Rules Exist

It might be your special day, but for this event space, it’s another day, it’s another day in business that they’re trying to help make happen. And while yes, it’s easy to read a list of restrictions and feel annoyed, but most rules exist for a reason. You probably have some rules at your home, right? You probably know businesses have rules. The venue has every right to. And of course, safety is a big one.

Rules like fire codes, capacity limits, electrical limits, insurance requirements, and alcohol tend to be non-negotiable because the venue isn’t going to risk their business for one event. Noise is common too (especially in residential areas), protecting quality through vendor restrictions (and contracts that they have put in place that they agreed to), all of this matters. There’s no personal attack on you and your wedding day, just keep that in mind here.

Which Rules are Easier to Live With?

But of course, it’s not like all constraints are equal here. Maybe some are mildly annoying, like maybe you picture candles in the center of the table of something, but instead those battery-operated ones are only allowed, or hurricane glasses, or whatever. That’s small enough, right? Like, that’s not a big deal. Some will genuinely affect the experience, like a hard music cutoff time or a strict bar package.

So the best strategy is choosing a venue where the rules align with what matters most. It doesn’t matter how beautiful a space is, if there are too many constraints, you might have to just choose another space instead.

You Just Need to Ask the Questions that Prevent Regret

Just another thing to keep in mind here, some rules look simple until they affect real logistics. Just ask about delivery windows, vendor access, setup and breakdown timing, what the venue provides, what rentals are required, and what staff are included. Like, you might be surprised to hear this, but not venus provide chairs and tables, sometimes you need to provide that. Ask about what happens if there’s bad weather, off-limit areas, just things like that, before you sign anything, so you won’t have regrets down the road, or the day of the wedding, or whatever else.

How to Host a Small Celebration with Big Energy

A micro-wedding is a ceremony and reception with a guest list typically under 50 people. It is not the same as an elopement, which involves very few or no guests. Micro-weddings focus on intimacy and flexibility. Couples choose them to spend more time with guests and reduce the complexity of large-scale events. Despite the size, these weddings are often planned with as much attention to detail as traditional ones.

Via Pexels

Finding Your Ideal Location for a Micro-Wedding

Selecting an ideal wedding location is one of the most important decisions couples will ever make, especially if they choose to have a small wedding. The advantages of having a smaller wedding include being able to utilize venues you might not otherwise consider. Small wedding venues can include private homes, courtyards, boutique restaurants, or beautiful outdoor spaces. The logistics of planning a small wedding are much easier to plan due to the smaller number of guests. Couples do not require large spaces such as ballrooms or grand banquet halls; they should look for venues that provide a unique design element or natural beauty. Fewer guests to plan for makes it simpler for the couple to plan for transportation, seating, and decorating for their special day.

Creating an Unforgettable Guest Experience

One of the benefits of choosing to host a small wedding is the ability for the couple to invest more money into the experiences of each of their guests. Couples may wish to provide welcome kits or personalized gifts as part of the overall experience of attending your wedding. Additionally, a customized menu or interactive entertainment is far easier to arrange for 30 guests than for 130 guests. It becomes more feasible to meet the dietary needs of your guests and provide quality food and beverages for them as well. Since there are fewer guests, staff members will be able to devote more time to serving each guest, which creates a better overall experience.

Impacting Food Choices

Food plays a significant role in the success of any type of celebration. As the size of the wedding decreases, so does the complexity of the food choices available to the couple. Since the couple will only be feeding a limited number of guests, they have more freedom to create a bold, memorable menu. Some of the ways to accomplish this include finding a vendor who specializes in creating dynamic and crowd-pleasing food options. For example, hiring a top rated tex mex catering company will provide you with a wide variety of flavorful, visually appealing dishes for your guests to enjoy. Due to the fact that the couple has fewer guests to cater to, they have more flexibility to be creative and interactive in their food choices.

Music, Ambiance, and Timing

Live music becomes viable at a lower cost. A three-piece band or acoustic soloist fits well in smaller spaces. Carefully designed playlists and ambient lighting elevate mood without crowd density. Smaller events also allow for more relaxed scheduling. There’s no need for strict timelines or long transitions between ceremony and reception. A single venue can handle both parts of the day, reducing stress and increasing cohesion.

Managing the Budget

Spending per guest often increases in micro-weddings, but overall costs drop. There’s no need for large-scale rentals, staffing, or bulk catering. Fewer invitations, smaller floral orders, and leaner décor budgets follow naturally. Couples can shift funds toward meaningful upgrades, better photography, designer attire, or extended honeymoon travel. Event coordination becomes more manageable, and fewer variables mean a lower risk of complications.

Micro-weddings are practical for couples seeking focus and control over their event. They offer efficiency in logistics, flexibility in planning, and depth in guest interaction. Choosing the right vendors and venues makes the event feel complete without requiring scale. When executed with care, a micro-wedding delivers the same significance and celebration as any larger counterpart, with clearer memories and closer connections.

Wedding Night Celebrations

Wedding night celebrations mean different things to other couples, and don’t always relate to traditional “activities”. For many, the wedding night is something special and an occasion to be marked. From foregoing expectations to social media content, here are some popular trends.

Making the Most of Limited Time

Most weddings are only for one day, and couples want to be the perfect hosts during that time. There might be relatives traveling vast distances to attend, and the night should be more about connecting with guests and having a great time. That’s why booking a wedding afterparty venue is becoming more popular. After the formal ceremony and dinner, people want to let their hair down and have some fun, even if it means extending into the small hours of the morning.

Ditching Traditional Expectations

Older values are not expected of people anymore in most Western countries. Where people used to rush into getting married, usually before they even really knew each other, that doesn’t happen too much these days. As such, couples who spend longer together before marriage usually “know” each other intimately anyway. Because of this, the traditional wedding night expectations are pretty much a thing of the past, as couples focus on a wholesome experience.

Wedding Night Celebrations as Part of a Vacation

Destination weddings aren’t too common, but they do represent around 25% of overall celebrations. This can be one of the most creative ways to personalize your wedding and make it something special. Today, many couples make the wedding more expansive as a “minimoon” that extends the celebrations after the stag and hen and ceremony, and before the traditional honeymoon. That also includes the wedding night, which is part of the extended experience.

More Content for Social Media

If you want to share your wedding with the world, good luck to ya! Today, almost everyone has a social media account on Facebook, X, or Twitter, and the world is driven by content. That means there are tons of people recording their weddings for likes, shares, and followers, and wedding content is pretty popular. Beyond the ceremony, though, wedding content becomes much more engaging with extended content such as lavish parties, unique experiences, and lots of food!

Reducing the Timeline Pressure

Crafting the perfect day takes a lot of work and can be a draining experience, even if you work with a wedding planner. There’s the logistics of it all, then pre-celebration plans, and the extended days after the wedding itself. This can place a lot of pressure on a couple, and letting their hair down for the night, and a few days after, can help relieve the stress that can build in the run-up to the wedding itself. That’s why many couples today make it more of a vacation.

Making the most of a limited amount of time is why wedding night celebrations often go on for much longer than a standard party. The day and night themselves can also become part of an extended vacation, which can help relieve some of the pressure that couples can build up.

We conceived an exciting concept for the inaugural magazine issue of 2026. Our plan includes a must-read “2026 Outlook” and a curated photography showcase. Utilizing Facebook, we invited photographers to submit their work and bios, aiming to feature captivating images that would appeal to our readership. This initiative promises to add vibrant beauty to the January issue while offering talented photographers a platform for exposure and recognition.

Our initial expectations for the open photography call were modest, but the response was overwhelming, with nearly 50 submissions received through email and instant messaging. This unexpected influx of entries made the selection process challenging, as we had to make difficult decisions for this month’s layout.

We ultimately selected 12 outstanding photographs. Inspired by this success, we decided to introduce a photo spotlight in the next 11 issues of 2026, aptly titled “SB Captured.” We’re thrilled to share the January Photo issue with you and hope it brings as much joy to our readers as it did to us in its creation.

We live in a world saturated with headlines of loss and conflict. Here, lately the headlines do little to encourage us. It’s easy to lose hope. Many of us felt profound sorry over the tragic murder of activist Charlie Kirk. I personally was not all that familiar with this man. What I have since learned about him and his incredibly short journey has opened my eyes and caused me to more readily acknowledge the beliefs and opinions of those other than my own. This tragedy also reminds me of the profound challenges of civility and peace in our political discourse. Why is it so difficult for us to engage in respectful debate and to reject the use of violence as a political tool? I pray that the loss of this man will lead us to a spiritual awakening that will bring peace and harmony to our society. Even in the shadow of such grave events, we are continually presented with powerful evidence of human resilience and the enduring capacity for positive change. Through the tireless work of our nation’s diplomats and this administration’s efforts, the Middle East has seen a breakthrough in an endless war. Families have been reunited with the return of the hostages, and the guns are silent for now – a powerful reminder that even the most entrenched conflicts can be resolved with courage and compromise.

As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, let us make a commitment to replace sorrow with action. We can’t wait for the future to be unified. We must roll up our sleeves and work for it. Be the one who is kind. Be the one who actively listens with an open mind. Be the one who takes that step towards unity. Ephesians 4:22-24 reminds us that we cannot change what we refuse to confront. A brighter tomorrow rests in our hands.

There is a lot involved in the planning of a wedding, and you might be wondering how you can ensure that you get it all right. One of the main things you’ll want to think about here is how you can ensure you are making the right decisions. As it happens, there are a few decisions that you will need to make early on if you are going to end up with the wedding you are hoping for. Let’s take a look at what some of those early decisions might be.

Date

Of course, you’ll need to settle on a date, and this will have to be something that you are confident in if you want to make sure you are doing it right. It should be a date that makes sense for you both and for as many of your core guests as possible. Consider what season you would like to get married in, and how the day is likely to look as a result. This is something that might be an easy decision for some couples and quite difficult for others, but you need to decide on it – and usually in tandem with the venue.

Venue

That’s why you’ll have to consider the venue choice at the same time as the date, because each venue will have its own list of various dates that are available, so this is one of the main things you will need to consider here. You’ll also want to ensure you find a wedding venue that suits your purposes, that can hold the number of people you are hoping to attend, and which is likely to be suitable for your theme that you have in mind. Searching through venues can take a while, but it’s vital.

Theme

Of course, that in itself is something you will have to figure out early on too. Getting the theme right is the kind of thing that you will want to focus on if you are going to be able to approach your wedding with confidence. It should be a theme you are both happy with and which you feel represents you and the relationship in some way, but don’t worry about it too much – it doesn’t have to go overboard, and you can simply ensure that you are sticking to some simple theme if you like. It’s just a subtle way to bring everything together as best as you can.

Numbers

Finally, how many people are you going to invite? You’ll need to see the numbers you are able to have with your venue, and you might find that you have to consider some alterations here. Some people prefer a big wedding and some just want a few close friends to witness the event, so it’s entirely up to you and there are no rights or wrongs. Regardless, it’s something that you will need to think about before you do any more planning. The sooner you get the numbers down, the better.
