Shreveport Celebrates Its Inner Booger

Mayor Ollie Tyler named June 9, 2015, Billy’s Booger Day, in honor of the release of William Joyce’s latest picture book.

The proclamation was given at the city council meeting Tuesday, June 9 at 3:00 pm. In return Joyce presented Mayor Tylor with the famous meteor that struck Billy in the book, to display in the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

Written and illustrated by Joyce, Billy’s Booger adds on to a collection of beloved children’s books.

According to a press release from Moonbot Studios Billy’s Booger is “full of nostalgic references to a time when TV was black-and-white and Sunday newspapers had things called the funnies, this wildly fun story-within-a-story is based loosely on children’s book legend Joyce’s fourth grade year, and includes a sewn-in mini-book of Joyce’s very first book.”

Billy’s Booger is the story of the world’s smartest booger and one that resulted in Joyce being sent to the principal’s office at A.C. Steere. Read more about Billy’s Booger here.

He encourages the citizens of Shreveport to embrace their “inner booger” and pursue their passions.

In 2012, the renowned illustrator and author won an Academy Award® for The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, an animated short film about the curative powers of story. In 2009, he co-founded Moonbot Studios a multimedia storytelling company exploring books, apps, films and video games — located in Shreveport.

“Joyce’s recognizable style, smooth and polished and bursting with midcentury detail, is a natural foil for the abundant hand-drawn, childlike embellishments. This spirited memoir shows and tells what it feels like to struggle and to prevail.”
