April showers bring May events. The Shreveport-Bossier City area is alive with festivals and entertaining cultural events all during the month of May. A few concerts include Stoney LaRue, Thomas Rhett, Joe Bonamassa and Kris Kristofferson. Do you have plans for Cinco de Mayo? Feel like dressing up for all things Kentucky Derby at the Shreveport Derby Day? What about Mudbug Madness, which has great live entertainment and mouth-watering Cajun cuisine? May 4

EVENT Taco Wars, 6–9 p.m., LSUS, Shreveport

It’s time for a taco tussle! Louisiana Food Prize will host The Shreveport Taco Wars in conjunction with the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission’s Soccer Exhibition Games at LSUS. Come down and taste tacos and salsa from a variety of Latin restaurants and food vendors from across northwest Louisiana. Each attendee will get Taco Tickets (tokens) to vote on their favorite from each vendor. Judges will determine the winners in an exciting, interactive taste test.

If you like Wade Bowen, Randy Rogers Band, Reckless Kelly or the Turnpike Troubadours, then this is the concert you won’t want to miss. Stoney LaRue will perform at The Stage at Silver Star in Bossier City at 8 p.m.

El Cabo Verde and the Provenance Community are back with the second annual Cinco De Mayo Celebration at Windrush Park. Come eat, drink and enjoy this family-friendly fiesta. There will be Folklorico dancers, piñatas, games, Mercado food, margaritas and a mariachi band. Live music starts at 4 p.m.

Can’t make it to Churchill Downs this year? Come celebrate the running of the Kentucky Derby on the beautiful lawn at R.W. Norton Art Gallery. A legend of the stage and screen, singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson will be live at Horseshoe’s Riverdome. The 3-time Grammy award-winning performer will entertain the audience with songs from his lengthy career as well as some of his newest compositions off The Cedar Creek Sessions album released in 2016. From Me and Bobby McGee to For the Good Times, Kristofferson has topped the charts since he began recording in the 1970s.

His latest album, Life Changes, was released in September and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. 

MUSIC Joe Bonamassa, 8 p.m., Shreveport Municipal Auditorium

Hailed worldwide as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation, Joe Bonamassa has almost single-handedly redefined the blues-rock genre and brought it into the mainstream. Since he shared the stage with BB King in 1989, he has distinguished himself as an incisive and compelling songwriter, a gutsy and soulful vocalist, as well as one of the most popular touring-and-recording artists around. Come see this Grammy-nominated blues-rock guitar icon as he performs live at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium.
